Sarah was the daughter of a trustee of the Quaker Plymouth Meetings of Whitemarsh. Quakers did not use a license to marry, but would request permission at the Meetings. Yet a marriage license was issued in Burlington, New Jersey, just north of Philadelphia across the Delaware River. John and Sarah, who was barely 16 or 17 years old, had eloped. It was three years later, in 1714 at a Radnor Monthly Meeting that John Ball petitioned an apology to Sarah's parent stating "...his being sorry for ye proceedings in Marriage contrary to her father and mother's will...".
The family story was passed down from their daughter, Hannah Ball Holloway, (1715-?) to her daughter, Hannah Holloway Hall (1747-?), to her son, Moses Hall ( 1778- 1834 ), to his son, William Hall (1816-1866) to his daughter, Charlotte Hall Burgett/Burgert (1844-1915), to her daughter, Ella Burgett/Burgent Cornwall (18 - 1966), to her daughter, Vera Cornwall Thayer (1902-1989), to her daughters, LaVonne Thayer Jordan and Diane Thayer Myers. By the time the mysterious story reached the present generation it went something like this: We have a set of Great-Grandparent ancestors on the Hall/Ball line who ran off and eloped across a river that separated two states. The parents were nor supportive of them being together and were very upset for a long time. You can imagine how surprised we were to find that this story was true and it happened over 250 years ago. Sarah Roades Ball would have been Charlotte Hall Burgett/Burgert's G-G-Great Grandmother.
