; Per Bevans on Soc Gen Med: "NICHOLAS de Stuteville of Liddel. In 1174 he was in possession of Liddel, Cumberland when the castle was captured by William the Lion. In 1205 he made a fine of 10,000 marks for having his inheritance of everything William, his brother, held, except Knaresborough castle and Boroughbridge which was kept in the king's hands until the fine was paid. It was never paid and those properties passed from the Stuteville family. Nicholas married as his second wife Gunnora, sister and coheir of Ralph d'Aubigny, widow of Gilbert de Gant (d.1191). Gunnora's father was Ralph d'Aubigny, the elder, younger brother of William d'Aubigny 'Brito' of Belvoir. In 1197 a fine was made recognising their right to 15 knights' fees in Auborn and Binbrook, Lincs.and North Dalton, Upper and Lower Naburn, Yorks.as Gunnor's inheritance. An unknown first wife was mother of his sons Robert and Nicholas. Their relationship is established in a charter of notification by four witnesses who stated they were present when Nicholas de Stuteville and his sons, Robert and Nicholas, bound themselves to give 100s rent to Kedholme priory. Nicholas is presumed to be one of the confederate barons who met at Stamford at Easter 1216, captured at Lincoln on 20 May 1217 and dead by 30 March 1218.

; one William de Roumare, also a Norman, who seems to have had a close though ill-defined connection with Lincolnshire in terms of land-holdings via his mother Lucy, apparently resented the grant of the Earldom of that county to d'Aubigny. He and his half-brother the Earl of Chester therefore appropriated Lincoln Castle in 1140 and fortified it against KING STEPHEN, who swiftly laid siege to it but was made prisoner by Chester and another ally of his, the Earl of Gloucester. STEPHEN was eventually set free and having patched up the quarrel with de Roumares created him Earl of Lincoln in or about 1141. That the patching was somewhat threadbare may be inferred from the fact that only six or so years later STEPHEN made Gilbert de Ga(u)nt Earl of Lincoln, although de Roumares had not apparently been deprived of the dignity. Like de Roumares, de Ga(u)nt had ancestral links with the county, his grandfather having held one of its most substantial agglomerations of manors at the time of the Domesday Survey in 1086.3

The foregoing would provide a relationship (or relationships)
between Sir Robert le Constable and Sir Edmund (not Edward) de
Thwenge of Cornburgh, consistant with those shown in the Thweng
pedigree cited above, and with the statements give by Foster that
Sir Robert le Constable had called "Edward" Thwenge of Cornburgh
his cousin (if only by marriage).

The probable descent of Sir Robert le Constable himself from
the de Thwengs of Kilton has not yet been resolved, although
hinted at by Foster as shown above. Perhaps the IPMs cited in
HSP 96:376-7 for Joan (de Mauley) de Thweng, dated 21 July 1347,
and for Isabel (le Constable) de Thweng, dated 21 July 1346,
will provide further proof, or additional details for research.

Cheers,

John *
