Claim of Robert Jardine [Page 110-11]:
Thomas Farish, Orange. Says that he never had any dealings with this house for anything whatever and that
this account was raised before he had purchased any goods on credit from any person. George Mitchell, the
factor, applied to him before the war for payment of this account but upon being satisfied that he never had
any dealings with him (the entry in the day book being made by one of his clerks) , Mr. Mitchell relinquished
the claim as to him and brought a suit against William Farish of Spotsylvania for the same debt. Mr. Farish
supposes that some person must have assumed his name when the goods were taken up as part of the article charged consists of hempin rolls or coarse linnen, for which (being a young man) he could have had no use. About six or seven years past Robert S. Jardine by whom the claims were filed, applied to Mr. Farish for payment of this same account. Mr. Farish stated to him what I have before related and supposed that he was so well convinced of the impropriety of the claim that nothing more would ever be heard of it. If this account had been just, Mr. Farish has always been able and I am certain would always have been willing to pay it. Mr. Farish is a man of great respectability and has resided on the same estate for more than twenty years; the same may be said of Mr. John Wharton of Culpeper.1

NOTE:THOMAS BICKERS (G2/R1)
2ND GENERATION
Virginia ca1740
4TH Son, 4TH Child, of Robert Bickers (G1) & Elizabeth VA ca1709-1808
Draft as of 21 May 1999
Note: Spelling used is that which appears in research documents
Thomas Bickers (G2/R1), of the Second Generation of Robert & Elizabeth Bickers of Orange County, Virginia, was born about 1740.
Marriage records in Orange County, Virginia, were not recorded until around 1790 to 1800; therefore, there is no record of Thomas Bickers' marriage but, as stated above, he was recorded as being the head of a family of three whites in the 1790 census for Orange County. According to the 1850 census for Orange County, George Bickers, the older son of Thomas Bickers, was born in 1766, giving his age in 1850 as 84, so it may be assumed that Thomas Bickers was married about 1765. William Bickers, the younger son of Thomas Bickers, was born in 1775 according to the 1820 census of Harrison County, Kentucky, in which census he gave his age as forty-five.
By eliminating all persons by the name of Bickers living in Orange County, Virginia, of the age to have been born around the time Thomas Bickers was married (1765), George and William Bickers would remain unaccounted for and this indicates that Thomas Bickers had only two children; namely George and William Bickers. At the time of taking the 1790 census for Orange County, recording 3 whites in Thomas Bickers' family, his wife was apparently not living; therefore. Thomas Bickers and his two sons, George and William Bickers, account for the three whites as recorded.
There is no record of the death of Thomas Bickers but, according to tax records, he was living in Orange County, Virginia, in 1808, and was without doubt a life-long resident of that county.
In 1767, Thomas was on the list of Taxes in Orange County, Virginia [1*], as follows:
Taxes: Box 35, Edmon Burrus, Constable, Nov 1767:
John Bickers, 1
Joseph Bickers, 1
William Bickers, 1
Nicholas Bickers, 1
Thomas Bickers, 1
In arriving at proof that Thomas Bickers was a son of Robert Bickers, reference is made to the 1790 US Census for Orange County, Virginia, which records the resident heads of families at that time. In fact, the only heads of families which were recorded under the spelling ?Bickers' at the time of the 1790 Federal Census for all 13 States were residents of Orange County, Virginia, as follows:
Robert Bickers
William Bickers
John Bickers
Thomas Bickers
Nicholas Bickers
Joseph Bickers
Thomas Bickers appears on the list of James Madison as having 3 whites and no blacks in his household.
Step-by-step, Joseph Edward Bickers, the author of ?Robert Bickers of Orange County, Virginia and His Descendants' (not copyrighted) proved by document that William Bickers, John Bickers, Nicholas Bickers, and Joseph Bickers were sons of Robert Bickers. It is obvious, therefore, that Thomas Bickers was also a son of Robert Bickers, notwithstanding the fact that Robert Bickers did not mention his son, Thomas Bickers, in his Will. Neither was John Bickers (G2/R1) nor Hannah Bickers Edwards (G2/R1) mentioned in the Will, yet it has been proven by document that John Bickers was a son of Robert Bickers as well as being an owner of extensive land in Orange County.
As further proof that Thomas Bickers was a son of Robert Bickers, reference is made to the intimacy and relationship between Thomas Bickers, his father, and brothers: In 1771, Thomas and Joseph Bickers are recorded as witnessing a deed of gift [2*] for land from Robert Bickers to his son-in-law, William Edwards:
[3*] DB15, p420. On Margin 'Exd & Deld to sd Edwards Jany 1799.' 1782, Orange County road orders include George Bickers (G3/T2) and Nicholas Bickers (G2/R1):

In 1785 he was levied on for ?3 white souls' and, in 1767, Thomas Bickers (G2/R1) [6*] was charged with tax in Orange County, Virginia: 1787-Thomas Bickus, self charged with tax.
In 1785, the property line of Thomas Bickers (G2/R1) was cited in the following land transaction: DB 18, pp413-414. Indenture 27 Oct 1785 between Wm Clasbey of Caroline Co and Jno Bledsoe of Orange Co...£60...100 acres bounded Thomas Mallory; south side of Beaver Dam

NOTE:THOMAS BICKERS (G2/R1)
2ND GENERATION
Virginia ca1740
4TH Son, 4TH Child, of Robert Bickers (G1) & Elizabeth VA ca1709-1808
Draft as of 21 May 1999

On Margin 'Exd & Deld to sd Edwards Jany 1799.' In 1785 he was levied on for ?3 white souls' and, in 1767, Thomas Bickers (G2/R1) [6*] was charged with tax in Orange County, Virginia: 1787-Thomas Bickus, self charged with tax.
