Rebecca was the daughter of James Ballard Ball and Jane "Jennie" Tunnell. She was born in Russell County, Virginia on 8 Jan 1828. Rebecca married John Wesley Ball in 1843. John was a furniture maker and seller in Russell County. They had several children, including: Haskew, Catharine Jane, George Washington, John Riley, Mary Ellen, Leah P, Martha F, Franklin Christman, and Cummings. This may not be a complete list.
Rebecca died on the 10 May 1987 in Honaker at the age of 44 years, 3 mos and 2 days. She is buried in Ball Cemetery beside John.
The transcription on her grave marker reads " Rebecca wife of John W Ball Died in Peace May 10 1872, aged 44 years 3 mos 2 d My Dear Children When you look on this stone remember that you have a mother in heaven and wants you all to meet me there
The present headstone on Rebecca Ball's grave was bought with donations made by several family members during a Ball Family Reunion in about 1985. The original marker was discovered to be badly deteriorated and almost unreadable during an earlier reunion. This marker is very similar to the original one, which was supposed to be laid down on her grave, but which may have been lost. Alexander Rondeau Ball, Jr. and Rev. Samuel Laswell arranged for the new stone to be created and placed on Rebecca's grave.

SAR #P-327168 & DAR #A-201280. Revolutionary Pension Application of Jacob Hess
Russell Co Va Law Order Book 6, Page 45
June 2, 1818
The following persons who reside in the county of Russell wishing to become pensioners under the act of Congress of the 18th of March last, entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States", declared on oath as follows:
Jacob Hess declared that he came into the United States with General Rochambeau the French General who came into the United States during the Revolutionary War in aid of this country; that he served at the seige of Little York and was at the taking of Cornwallis; that he was taken to Charlotte Courthouse in this state to winter there; that he preferred this land of liberty to the country which gave him birth, and submits his claim to the liberality of the court. He served two years as well as he recollects, and is now in indigent circumstances.
It also appears to the satisfaction of the court that the afforesaid applicants are persons of good credit as witnesses, and that they served in the Revolutionary War against the common enemy; and it was also satisfactorily proven to the court that the said John Ferral, Leonard Pigman, Carlton Keeling, John Sykes, Abraham Childers, James Berry, Charles Sexton and Jacob Hess according to the report of their neighbors previous to the passage of the said Act of Congress had served as soldiers in the Revolutionary War; All which is ordered to be certified to the Secretary of the Department of War.

Antebellum Home Destroyed By Fire, 2011
Bridgeport-A lightning strike during the Feb. 28th rainstorm is thought to be the cause of a fire that destroyed Seclusion Bend,a two-story antebellum brick home near the French Broad River,in the Bridgeport Community.
According to the current owners, the home was uninhabited, and a neighbor notified them of the fire.
The home was featured,in the 1970's,in The Newport Plain Talk,as an installment of special series,"Traces of the Past".At the time, the late Miss Hester Susong, granddaughter of the home's builder, told a newspaper reporter, that construction of the home was commenced in 1848.
Miss Susong's grandparents,Jehu Stokely, and his wife, the former Jane Adaline Burnett, had the home built of bricks hand-forged on the site.Miss Susong said slaves gathered the clay from the farm, made the bricks, and burned them by the yard fence.
The home's interior featured a kitchen, downstairs bedroom, and two upstairs bedrooms.
     Construction was completed in 1850.
Originally the home contained only one closet.
A separate large log kitchen.located on the north side of the home, was ruled over by a slave. Two slave cabins once stood on the property.
The wooden baseboards were approximately a foot wide, and the ceilings were eighteen feet high.Following the deaths of Stokley and his wife, ownership of the property descended to their daughter,Susan Eleanor Stokely, who married George Washington Susong, and later to their daughter,Miss Hester Caroline Susong.
The Susongs moved into the home following Mr. Stokely's death in 1889.
After Miss Susong's death,at age 93,in 1976,the property was sold. For several years it was the home of tenants, but had been empty for some time.
It is thought the home was built on the site of McKay's Fort, one of several structures which stretched across Cocke County in its earliest days as a refuge for settlers during times of Indian uprisings. Many of the McKays left Cocke County and moved west.
