; After some years of teaching at Carson-Newman and at Mercer University, he devoted himself to historical research with the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He is best known for his monumental work, the eight-volume Letters of Members of the Continental Congress. On this period of American history he was, and is still, considered the pre-eminent authority. His books were among those selected for the White House Library by a special committee appointed during the administration of President Kennedy. Dr. Burnett received the Columbia University Loubat Prize for his interpretive volume, The Continental Congress, published by MacMillan in 1941. In addition, he contributed innumerable monographs to professional journals and learned publications, as well as articles on more diversified subjects to other periodicals. It was not inconsistent with his scholarship that Dr. Edmund C. Burnett was a wit, raconteur, and letter writer par excellence. His clubs were the Cosmos, Palaver, and Brown University Alumni.
