  2. [S769] Letter from Mary McGinnis Wood Collins (unknown author address) to Frank, 1893; unknown repository (unknown repository address). My dear Frank,

When you arrive at an age to reflect - you doubtless will want to know who your ancestors were...I now propose to write for your gratification all that I can now recall from having heard my mother yr great grandmother say about them.

History gives the date of the arrival of the Huganots in America. They fled from France to this country for protection on account of religious persecution. Among them was three brothers Flournoy by name - One of them became my ?grandmothers father. His daughter Hannah married Col. Wooldridge of Orange co. Va. Her daughter Nancy married John Robinson Young of Woodford Co, KY, her daughter Mary married Erasmus Gill McGinnis of Mercer co, Ky, her daughter Julia married Thomas Collins a native of Ireland, her daughter Fanny married Harry Harlis Hughes of Waynesburg (sp?), Pa. yr own father, is the direct line descent on yr maternal ? mothers side - Lewis Young of Va. married a full cousin to Henry Clay his son John was my grandfather.

My grandfather Thos McGinnis came to Ky from Maryland about the year 1779 and went into fort near Harrodsburg, Ky he had many battles with the Indians - He obtained land in Mercer Co a few years later and settled upon it There my father, G. G. McGinnis was born being the youngest child, he was the father of yr grandmother Julia Collins. This much about finishes the direct line of descent on both sides.

I will now narrate what has occurred in the last fifty years, almost within my recollection. Yr great grandparents Erasmus and Mary were married in New Albany, Ind in 182?. She was chozen by her classmates to strew flowers in General LaFayettes pathway upon his return to the United States - For this purpose an elegant white silk embroidered in rose buds was purchased in Philadelphia, in this dress she yielded to the ? of her lover and fled with him to New Albany, Ind against the wishes of her Uncle and was there married - they resided in Versailles until 1835 when they moved to Louisville, he engaging in the manufacture of rope on 7th Street near Broadway - Of this union eleven children were born, three dying in infancy - George W (M?) married Mary Jane Wood after the war was over Sarah married William Holeman of Frankfort, Ky they have two living children Geor4ge and Jissie (sp?) - Fanny died at the age of 18 of consumption -

Mary was twice married, in 1856 to Frank J Wood of (Min, Wis ??) in 1874 to Thomas Collins then living in Mt Vernon Ind running a democratic newspaper call "The Democrat". ? William died at the age of 18 with consumption (???and is buried in Cave Hill) Clifton never married and died at the age of 58 in the Soldiers Home at Hampton , Va - next comes your grandmother Julia, she had three daughters Fanny, Georgia and Almyra who died in infancy. Jullia died in Mt Vernon, Ind in 1872 and is buried there with her babe. I was with her at the time of her death and afterwards married her husband who died in Louisville of lung trouble at 1008 - 6th St and is buried in Cave Hill

His daughter Fanny was married at the Methodist parsonage on 6th street in Dec. 1888 by Rev. (??) of that denomination The7y now have three children of whom you are the oldest - Harlis and Steele by name. Mary Georgetta Collins was married to Issac Steele in Jeffersonville, without the knowledge or consent of her father, but with her mothers approbation At this writing she has one son, John Dawson aged 4 years - They live in Hustonville, Ky where Mr. Steele has a general store.

Stationary says Louisville, Ky .......1893. Letter was written by Mary McGinnis Wood Collins.

Atterson Lewis Walden was buried after 18 August 1892 at Lander-Walden Cemetery, Burgin, Mercer Co., Kentucky, USA; from Find A Grave website:
Birth:      Sep. 26, 1803, Caroline County, Virginia, USA
Death:      Aug. 18, 1892, Mercer County, Kentucky, USA

The following information can be found in Kentucky: A History of The State, 1887, by Perrin-Battle-Kniffin, 1032-1033.

"ATTERSON LEWIS WALDEN was born September 26, 1803, in Caroline County, Va; removed with his parents in 1805 to Lincoln County, Ky., in 1808 to Garrard County, and in 1833 to Mercer County, locating on Cane Run pike, two and one-half miles east of Harrisburg, where he has since resided. His father, John Walden, a native of Virginia, enlisted at the age of eighteen years in the Continental Army, and remained until the close of the war. He was a farmer and slave-holder, and died aged eighty-five years. He was the son of Lewis Walden, and married Elizabeth Pitts, of Virginia (died in 1854, aged seventy-six years), and from their union sprang Sophia (Douglas), Atterson L., Willis, Melinda (Simpson), Permelia, Payton, John, Elizabeth (Samson) and Angelina (Adams).
Atterson Lewis Walden was first married in 1825, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas McGinnis, of Mercer County (born in 1802, died in 1877), and to them were born Elizabeth (Lander), Mary (Thompkins), Frances (Prather), Angeline (Garnett) and Theresa I.
In 1859 he was married to Mrs. Maria S. Meglone, daughter of William W. and Frances (Sebree) Sharp, of Lexington (born May 15, 1820). Montgomery and Maria S. Meglone's children are Whitney and Mary (Hutchinson).
A. L. Walden has been president of the Mercer County Agricultural Association for twenty years. He is a farmer, having 220 acres of productive land, but lost forty-two slaves as a result of the late war. Thomas McGinnis, from the fort at Harrodsburg, pre-empted and settled this place. There is now living, but on the decline, on this farm, a seedling apple tree of his planting, fully one hundred years old, nearly twelve feet in circumference, which has never failed to bear an annual crop since it came into bearing. In politics Mr. Walden is Democrat."

ASHLEY ITEMS

E. G. McGinnis, born in Bourbon Co., KY, Oct. 22, 1822, died in Ashley, MO, April 18, 1899. At about eight years of age he came with his parents to Missouri and settled in Lincoln County near Auburn, afterwards removing to Montgomery County where the greater part of his life was spent. Of the first marriage [Martha Stewart] there was no issue. On November 1, 1849, he was married to Miss Appalonia Berger to whom were born 7 children, six of whom, Mrs. Monie Branstetter, William G. McGinnis, Mrs. Ellen Hood, Thomas B. McGinnis, Mrs. Kate Nunn and Mrs. Lura Kerr, survive.

In 1879 Mr. McGinnis moved to Ashley to send his children to school, and to the time of his death has remained a honored and respected citizen.

For the last ten years of his life he has been a frequent suffer from acute forms of kidney troubles, but being of a strong constitution, always rallied and was soon out again. After several weeks of intermittent illness, he was taken down on Feb. 24, with what proved to be cancer of the stomach and calmly he awaited the end; hoping each day that death would come to relieve him of his suffering.

In early life he united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and ever since has lived a consistent Christian life. For him death had no terrors, and life no hope of further joys. He was ready to go at the Master's bidding, and on Tuesday morning, surrounded by friends and children the end came peacefully.

Respected by all who knew him, he had lived in our midst nearly twenty years, a valuable citizen, a constant friend and a faithful father and husband. For politics he was a sturdy Democract, working for the principles in which he believed. The remains accompanied by friends and relative were taken to Brush Creek Church in Montgomery county, where they were laid to rest in the family burying ground [Berger Cemetery, Montgomery Co., MO].
