"Guyomarch was the son and successor of Hervé II de Léon, earl of Wiltshire, and an illegitimate daughter of King Stephen of England, possibly named Sybilla. He was viscount of Léon from 1168 until his death. His reign was spent in constant rebellion against his nominal lords in an effort to preserve his historical independence. With his wife Nobilis de Penthièvre, he had two sons, Hervé I and Guyomarch V, of whom Hervé would have progeny.
"In August 1167 King Henry II of England marched on Léon and captured or razed Guyomarch's major castles, forcing him to submit and grant hostages. Guyomarch succeeded his father soon after. He followed his father in trying to preserve his de facto independence from ducal authority and foreign influence. Most especially he sought to protect his economic interest in the right of salvage from shipwrecks, famously declaring that he possessed 'the most valuable of precious stones', a rock which generated 100,000 solidi per annum in revenue due to shipwrecks.
"By 1169 Guyomarch was in revolt and Henry ordered Conon IV le Petit, duc de Bretagne, earl of Richmond, who was also lord of Tréguier which was conveniently adjacent to Léon, to put down the disturbance. Conon campaigned against him in 1170, defeating him once but failing to secure his submission. After Conon's death in February 1171, Guyomarch rebelled once more and Henry himself, marching from Pontorson, led the campaign against him, which culminated in the loss of Guyomarch's castles, all of which were razed save three which Henry kept. Guyomarch formally submitted in May at Pontorson. He was ordered to return all lands confiscated from his neighbours or vassals or submit to royal judgment.
"In January 1171 Guyomarch had ordered the murder of his younger brother Hamo, bishop of Saint-Pol de Léon. The parallels between this and the murder of Thomas Becket the previous year, of which Henry was accused, probably encouraged decisive action on the king's part, so as to present himself as a defender of the assassinated churchman.
"In August 1177 Henry's son Geoffrey, duc de Bretagne, at his father's request, led a campaign against Guyomarch, who was again in rebellion. Guyomarch submitted his lands to Henry, but by April 1179 he was in revolt once again. It was his final revolt. Geoffrey, at his father's request, again led the campaign against him, but he was harsher this second time, confiscating the whole of Léon to the duchy of Brittany. Guyomarch agreed to undergo a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and subsist in the meanwhile off the revenues of two parishes until the following Christmas, but he died in 1179 before any of this could take place.“.3

Nobilis de Penthièvre1
F, #9563, b. 1151, d. 1208
Last Edited | 7 Oct 2020 |
Nobilis de Penthièvre married Guyomarch IV l'insensé de Léon Vicomte de Léon, son of Herve II de Léon vicomte de Leon, Earl of Wiltshire and 'filia Stephani' (?) de Champagne.2,3,1
Nobilis de Penthièvre was born in 1151.1
Nobilis de Penthièvre died in 1208.1
; Per Med Lands:
"GUYOMAR [IV], son of HERVE [II] Vicomte de Léon & his first wife --- ([before 1120?]-27 Sep, 1179 or after). "Herveus Leonensis Vicecomes" donated "juxta castrum meum…Mons-Relaxus" to Saint-Martin for a monastery by charter dated 3 Mar 1128, subscribed by "Hervei vicecomitis, Guihomar filii eius, Eudonis", witnessed by “...Herveus frater bastardus vicecomitis...”[180]. It is assumed that Guyomar’s inclusion in the witness list indicates that he was not younger than about 8 years old at the time of this document. The Guillelmi Armorici Historia records that "Herveus Comes Leoniæ…cum Guidomaro filio suo" were captured in 1163 and imprisoned "apud castellum Nini"[181]. Vicomte de Léon. Robert of Torigny records the death in 1168 of "Herveus de Lehun" and the succession of "Guihomar filius eius"[182]. "Herveus Comes Leonensis" donated "insulam...Beniguer" to Saint-Mathieu by charter dated [1169], witnessed by "Guihomarum filium suum qui sibi succedebat in regnum, atque G. nepotem suum, Haymonem filium suum qui tunc temporis erat Leonensis episcopus, Herveum fratrem dicti Guihomari nothum, Gradlon, Budic, Guegon filios eiusdem Hervei"[183]. The wording of the witness list suggests that the charter was issued after the death of the donor. "Guidomarus…Leonensis dominus et uxor suo Nobilis filiique sui Guidomarus et Herveus" founded the abbey of Daoulas by undated charter[184]. Robert of Torigny records that the castle of "Guihomarum vicecomitem Leonensem" was captured by "Gaufridus regis Henrici" in 1179[185]. The Chronicle of Robert Abbé de Saint-Michel records in 1179 that “Gaufredus filius regis Henrici dux Britanniæ" subjugated "Guihomarum vicecomitem Leonensem...et filios eius" and captured “omnia castella eorum”, granting two parishes until the following Christmas to “Guihomaro seniori” who with his wife was planning to travel to Jerusalem, and that he allowed “Guihomari juniori” eleven parishes from his father’s lands “et retento secum de familia sua Herveo fratre eius”[186]. Guyomar may have died before undertaking the planned journey. The necrology of Landévennec records the death “V Kal Oct” of “Guidomarus vicecomes Leonensis frater noster”[187].
"m NOBILIS, daughter of ---. "Guidomarus…Leonensis dominus et uxor suo Nobilis filiique sui Guidomarus et Herveus" founded the abbey of Daoulas by undated charter[188]. It is not known whether she was the same wife who planned to accompany her husband to Jerusalem in 1179 (see above)."

GAV-24.
; per Pedrick: [quote] The third of the manor of Whittington was that now known as Newton with Docker and appears to have belonged to a native family which had accepted the Norman king. Ravenkil son of Raganald is the first of this family to be named, as he attested the Charter of Roger of Poitou to the monks of Lancaster in 1094 (Farrer, Lacs. Pipe Rolls p 43) he was also a holder of lands in Woodplumpton. His son Roger gave lands in Linacre to the Hospital of Jerusalem and was father of Richard who died in 1201 (Ibid, pp 43,44). This Richard, son of Roger, married Margaret daughter and co-heir of Thurstan Banastre and was the founder of Lytham Priory - Margaret is named in her husband's charter of 1-5 Richard 1 (1189-94)(Ibid, pp. 346, 348). Richard had five daughters and was fined £100 for marrying his eldest daughter, Matilda, without the King's licence; this fine is accounted for in the Pipe Roll of 1179-80. His children were:
(i) MATILDA, married to Sir Robert de Stockport, who died in 1205, leaving a son and heir Robert de Stockport, whose inquisition post mortem is dated 27th March 1249, who also left a son and heir, Robert de Stockport of full age, who had livery of his lands by writ dated 4th May 1248, having given 33s 4d for his relief. He died in 1292, leaving a daughter and heiress Joan, who married Sir. Nicholas de Eton.
(ii) QUINILDA, was married twice, first to Jordan de Thornhill and secondly to Roger Gernet of Halton. She however died without issue in 1252, when an inqusition post mortem, held on 13th May, found that her heirs were Robert de Stockport and Sir Ralph de Bethum, great-nephew and nephew respectively, and that she held in chief of the heirs of Sir William de Lindesey 5 1/4 bovates of land in Whittington by the service of 4s 5d. In June 1252 her heirs paid 40s and had livery of her lands.
(iii) MARGARET married in 1206 to Hugh de Morton, died s.p.
(iv) AVICE, married in 1201 to William de Millum; both died s.p before 1235.
(v) AMURIA, married, before 1206 to Thomas de Bethum on whom an inquisition post mortem was held on 17th April 1249, which found Sir Ralph de Bethum to he his son and heir. [end quote]1
