Herve II de Léon vicomte de Leon, Earl of Wiltshire1
M, #9476, b. circa 1100, d. 1168
Father | Guiomar III de Léon vicomte de Léon1,2,3 |
Mother | Orwen de Cornouaille4,2 |
Last Edited | 7 Oct 2020 |
Herve II de Léon vicomte de Leon, Earl of Wiltshire was born circa 1100.2 He married 'filia Stephani' (?) de Champagne, daughter of Stephen (Etienne) (?) de Blois, King of England, circa 1139.1
Herve II de Léon vicomte de Leon, Earl of Wiltshire died in 1168 at Brittany, France (now).2
; It was alleged that King Henry I of England had begged him to visit England, but that he was so great and haughty a noble that he never condescended to do, until he came over for King Stephen. He was with King Stephen at Oxford in June 1139, when his men are said to have been attacked by those of the Bishop of Salisbury in the _fracas_, which led to the arrest of the bishop.
King Stephen gave Hervé his (almost certainly illegitimate) daughter to wife and she appears to have been the mother of his children. Before or early in 1140 Hervé was created Earl of Wiltshire. He may have been again with the King at Oxford early in 1140, in which year the castle of Devizes was handed over to him by its garrison, after they had been heavily bribed by Stephen; but in 1141 he was besieged there by the common people, and after a long siege he was forced to surrender and withdrew from England. It was held that his earldom had reverted to the crown.
He continued to rule in Léon, and although he had lost his English earldom he continued to assume comital rank; for about 1157 he styled himself _comes_ in a charter, in which he refers to his father as _vicecomes_. Hervé died in 1168 in Brittany. It appears that his wife had died long before him and it is not known whether he had married again.2
