Sir Walter de Washington Knt, of Washington, co. Durham died on 14 May 1264 at England; Burke's Peerage: "d. ca. 1272". Possibly killed at the battle of Lewes.1,2,6,3
; Per Genealogics: "Through his wife he acquired lands in Northumberland. He was mentioned amongst the Durham Knights at the Battle of Lewes, on 14 May 1264, where he was probably killed."3 EDV-22.
; NB: Welles [1879:18,26] says John's father's name was William, but chronolgically, it seems more likely that his father was Walter de Washington. Welles states that John's father William was at the battle of Lewes. Walter was at the battle and probably died there. Furthermore, Welles shows a son, William b ca1230, while Genealogics shows a son for Walter b. bef 1240. I have chosen to follow Genealogics and assume that Walter (not William) was the name of the father of Michael and John. GA Vaut
Per Welles[1879:18]:
"6 William de Washington, called William de Wessington, second son of Walter fil Bondo de Washington, was born at Welleburne, or Milburne, Westmoreland, about
1200.
"" He is said to have held the Manor of Wessyngton, alias Washington, county Durham, of the Bishop of Durham, 11 Henry III." (1226).
"" In the 13th John (1212), he paid the king 40 marks to marry Alicia, the widow of John de Lexington, and was allowed 10 marks for 2 palfreys. He was at the battle of Lewes, in 1264."
"He had issue :
""About 1260 occurred the wars of the Barons, during which the throne of Henry III. was shaken by the De Montforts. The chivalry of the Palatinate rallied under the Royal standard. On the list of the loyal knights who fought for their sovereign in the disastrous battle of Lewes (1264), in which the king was taken prisoner, we find the
name of William, de Washington." — Hutchinson s Hist. Durham, vol. 1, p. 220."8,3,9
