Matthew Rodham was born circa 1620 at Yorkshire, England.1 He married Elizabeth Hewitt, daughter of Robert Huett and Hannah (?), circa 1648 at Kent Island, St. Annes Co., Maryland, USA.1
Matthew Rodham died on 20 March 1671/72 at St. Stephens, Northumberland Co., Virginia, USA.1 He was sealed as a spouse of Elizabeth Hewitt on 14 March 1990.1
; From Mary and Robert Pettitt: From the amount of land Mathew gave to his daughter Hannah, it would appear he was a large landowner in Northumberland Co. , Virginia. The following deeds are interesting in that it appears that Mathew was able to procure some of the coveted cleared Indian land that was quickly patented by the early settlers. Northumberland County is in the area of the Algonquin Groups, specifically that region which was earlier under Chief Powhatan's influence. Although we don't know exactly where the Rodham land was located, it is possible that the Indian land claimed by Mathew Rodham was cleared by a small tribe known as Secacawoni, which lived in Northumberland County along the Coan River and near it's entrance to the Potomac River. (From 'Indians in the 17th Century Virginia' by Ben C McCary 1957, Pg 1-6.)1
; 'Mathew Rhoden' renewed a patent of 350 acres in Northumberland County on 9 Dec 1662, 280 acres being located on a swamp which was a branch of Kings Creek of the Chickacoone River. Its northwest border was upon Mr. Hugh Lee's land, and 70 acres was upon the same. The patent was originally dated 13 Sept 1654. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1, pg. 487, Patent Book V.)1
; He married Elizabeth Hewitt in MD, 1648. Elizabeth was born in England 1633. Elizabeth was the daughter of Richard [Robert ?] Hewitt and Hannah <-----> wo William Price. Elizabeth died before 03 FEB 1675 in Northumberland, VA, at approximately 41 years of age.1
; Notes for Mathew Rodham: From William W. Grier: Mathew is mentioned in the Minutes of the Council and General Court of Virginia, in 1674 and 1675 (Pgs. 388, 399, and 405).1
; On 8 June 1664, 'Mathew Rhodam' of Northumberland Co. was granted 393 acres of land in that county. 100 acres were situated northernly upon Hugh Lee's land, southernly upon an old Indian field and westernly upon land of James Clayton. 288 acres were situated southeasternly upon the head of a swamp of King's Creek, northeasternly toward land of Col. John Matrom, and five acres were at the head of the aforesaid land and betwixt land of Capt. Rogers and Col. Jno. Trussell.1
; It appears that the same deed of gift was resubmitted to the court on 7 Nov 1668 (on pp. 52-53) and was recorded as it was first written. The apparent addition to this recording was the following.1
; 'Know all men by these presents that I Elizabeth Rodon doe hereby appoint & ______ my Loving friend Thos Hobran to be my lawful ____ in my name & ____ to at _____ in Northumberland County & Convey _____ for three hundred ninety three acres of made over by my husband Mathew Rhodon with my full consent unto my son in law Christopher Neale my sd _____ shall lawfully Act _____ I doe hereby ratify & confirm he is a good friend to all intents & purposes as if I was there personally _________ & acknowledged the same my self-written for my hand & seale this 7th of Nbr (November) 1668 (signed) Elizabeth Rodon marke (witnessed) Daniel Neale George Hayes his marke.1'
; Also in 1664, Mathew Rodham and Elizabeth, his wife, made a deed in consideration of Richard Kenner's marriage with their daughter Elizabeth. We do not have a copy of this deed proving our lineage, but we do have a copy of another of Mathew's deeds of gift. We present the following documents which give proof of the lineage of another of the Rodham daughters, Hannah. The documents were written in a decorative script which helped contribute to the difficulty in transcribing them.1

; Matthew Rodham was born in Northumberland, England 20 SEP 1620. Matthew died after 20 MAR 1672 in Northumberland, VA, at approximately 51 years of age.1
; Matthew may also have been in NORTHUMBERLAND, England or YORKSHIRE, England. Notes: Matthew Rodham worked as a servant to Leonard Calvert in 1633, Maryland until 28 Oct 1639. In 1642, He moved to Virginia. Moved back to Maryland, 1643, back to Virginia in 1650. In 1656 He was a Justice for Northumberland, Virginia. He owned land in both Maryland and Virginia.1 GKJ-9.
; From MARYLAND GENEALOGIES by the Maryland Historical Magazine p138: 'Matthew Rodham of Kent Island, Maryland, in Jul 1642 swore 'oath' to the will of John Butler of Kent Island, half nephew of Capt Nathaniel Butler. Thomas Butler, brother of John, also lived on Kent Island with Matthew.1'
; Sources: CURRY DESCENDANTS by Judge Noble K. Littell pp30 ref#3410. CURRY DESCENDANTS by Judge Noble K. Littell pp31-32 ref#6820. More Notes: From The Coppage-Coppedge Family by Maxim/Manham:, 'Mathew Rodham was apparently a younger son, contributed by his mother to Lord Baltimore's experiment.' It is known from various early MD records that Matthew's passage to MD was paid by others and that he served six years as a servant to Lord Leonard Calvert. He may have been the son of Edmund and a younger brother to John Roddam(b. 1614), the heir to Roddam. However, a search of available Northumberland Parish Records failed to reveal a list of Edmond's children. The Ancestry of Edmond Roddam is given back to 1296 in Burke's LAND GENTRY, 1939 Edition. p. 1934, and includes Sir John Roddam who was killed at the Battle of Towton in 1461 during the Wars of the Roses, and Edmond's father, Robert, who was persecuted for his 'Papist' (Catholic) beliefs.1
; 'Matthew demanded 50 acres more as servant of Governor Baltimore.' Matthew bought 100 acres ('Come Away') from Col Thomas Taylor of Anne Arundel, executor of the will of Major Samuel Lane.1 Matthew Rodham was baptized in the LDS church on 13 February 1990.1 He received his endowment on 14 March 1990.1
