He inherited the homestead of his father and grandfather on the Lancaster Pike, and succeeded his father as director of the Bank of Chester County, from which position he resigned in 1870, and was in turn succeeded by his eldest son. While not a politician, he took an active interest in public affairs. His death was caused by heart disease, in which the lungs finally became involved. His funeral was a very large one, there being over sixty carriages in the procession." [end quote]6

; VILLAGE RECORD, Chester county, April 5, 1837: 'Obituary At his residence in Downingtown, on Tuesday, the 28th ult., Isaac Downing, Esq., one of the representatives of this county in the State Legislature, aged 45 years. In this afflicting bereavement, an amiable partner and two interesting little children are left deplore a loss which none others can duly appreciate. It may be truly said, he was one of the best husbands, an most affectionate of fathers. The neighbourhood in which he resided, and indee the whole county, have sustained a severe loss in his dispensation of Providence. Although this was his first session in the Legislature, such was his unwearied attention to the interests of his constituents, that there is no doubt he would have proved a highly valuable and influential representative, an that his constituents would have required his services in future sessions had his life been spared.1' He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature at the time of his death.2
