"LANDO [II] (-after [887]). The Cronica de Monasterio Sanctissimi Benedicti record that "Lando filius eius [=Lando]" succeeded his father as Count of Capua, dated to 860 by the editor of the MGH edition, but was expelled from Capua after six months by "Pandon thio suo"[1446]. Erchempert records that "Sergius magister militum" sent "duos liberos suos Gregorium magistrum militum et Cæsarium nec non et Landulfum generum suum Suessulanum" to fight "Lando…filium…Lando iunior" [Count of Capua] after his father´s death [dated to 859 by the editor of the MGH edition] but that "Cæsarium" was captured[1447]. Erchempert records that "Landulfus" captured "Guaiferium principem" [dated to 874 by the editor of the MGH edition], that he was released after appointing "filios Landonis, Landonem…et Landonulfum, cognatos suos" as pledges and left for Ravenna in exile[1448]. Erchempert records that, after the death of "Landulfus" [dated to 879 by the editor of the MGH edition], "nepotes illius" divided Capuan territories among themselves and that "Pandonolfus" took "urbem Tianensem et Casam Irlam", "Lando" took "Berelais et Suessam", "alter Lando" took "Calinum et Caiaziæ", "Atenolfus" took "castrum in Calvo", and that "Landulfum…adolescentulum Landoni filium" was consecrated as bishop[1449]. It is assumed that Lando who received "Berelais et Suessam" was Lando [II] ex-Count of Capua, son of Count Lando [I], but this is not beyond all doubt. Erchempert records that, after the accession of "Atenolfus", he was opposed by "Landone germano eius…cum ceteris fratribus" (which passage must refer to Lando [II] ex-Count of Capua, cousin of Atenolf not his brother) but that "Lando" returned to "Teanum" which he left to "Landonolfus frater suus"[1450].
"[m firstly ---. No direct evidence has been found of this supposed first marriage. However, the chronology of this family suggests that [884] would have been late for Lando [II] to have married for the first time, when he was probably born in the 820s.]
"m [secondly] ([884]) as her second husband, --- of Naples, widow of ---, daughter of [SERGIUS II Duke of Naples & his wife ---]. ; Per Genealogics:
“Pandolfo was the son of Landolfo II, principe di Benevento e Capua, and his wife Wanzia. He was prince of Benevento and Capua from 943 or 944 until his death. He was made duke of Spoleto and Camerino in 967 and succeeded as prince of Salerno in 977 or 978. He was an important nobleman in the fight against the Byzantines and Saracens for control of the Mezzogiorno in the centuries after the collapse of Lombard and Carolingian authority on the Italian peninsula. He had established himself over almost the whole of the southern half of Italy before his death. With his wife Aloara he had five sons of whom Landolfo would have progeny.
“He co-ruled with his father Landolfo II from 943 when his grandfather Landolfo I died, and with his brother Landolfo III from 959. Sometime about 955 Pope John XII led an army of Romans, Tuscans and Spoletans against Landolfo II and Pandolfo, but Gisulf I of Salerno came to their rescue and no battle was given. The pope and Gisulf made a treaty at Terracina. Gisulf and Pandolfo had a strong alliance after that.
“In 961 Landolfo II died and Pandolfo and his brother became sole princes, though the elder Pandolfo was by far the stronger. The _Chronicum Salernitanum_ affirms the co-regency, however, and the principle of the indivisibility of the united Capua-Benevento as declared by Atenolfo I in 900, when it says: _Beneventanorum principatum eius filii Pandolfum et Landolfum bifarie regebant...communi indivisoque iure_ ('the Beneventan principality was reigned in jointly by Pandolfo and Landolfo under indivisible common jurisdiction'). However this system eventually collapsed and Pandolfo ruled in Capua while Landolfo ruled in Benevento. The _Chronicum_ says: _Pandolfo tenuit principatum una cum suo germanus annos octo_ ('held the principality solely with his brother for eight years'). Late in 965 a rebellion in Rome overthrew Pope John XIII, who was arrested and imprisoned in Campania. Whether he escaped or was released, he arrived in Capua not much later, seeking the protection of Pandolfo, who gladly gave it. In return, and for the favour of the citizens, the pope raised Capua into an archdiocese and gave Pandolfo's brother Giovanni the pallium. After ten months of exile, another revolt in Rome created an opportunity for his return and Pandolfo sent the pope back with a Capuan escort.
“In 967 Emperor Otto I came down to Rome and granted Pandolfo the vacant duchy of Spoleto and Camerino and charged him with prosecuting the war against the Byzantine empire. Pandolfo and Landolfo introduced Prince Gisulf of Salerno to the emperor at this time. They then took part in the imperial campaign of 968, but Landolfo retired in illness and died at Benevento, leaving two sons, Pandolfo and Landolfo. Even though Pandolfo was with the emperor on the border of Calabria when news of Landolfo's death reached him, he quickly returned to Benevento and associated with him his own eldest son Landolfo, who was crowned prince in the Church of Sancta Sophia, whereupon Pandolfo rejoined the imperial campaign. In that year Otto left the siege of Bari in the charge of Pandolfo, but the Lombard was captured in the Battle of Bovino (969) by the Byzantines and jailed in Constantinople. In 970, during his absence, the Byzantines besieged Capua and Marinus II of Naples ravaged the countryside. Pandolfo was released later as part of a peace treaty between the Byzantine and Western empires in which the Byzantine emperor Johannes I Tzimiskes gave Theophana Skleraina in marriage to Otto's son Otto II. During Pandolfo's absence, the great principality had been administered by Landolfo I, archbishop of Benevento, and the young Landolfo, with help from his mother, Pandolfo's wife Aloara. Benevento had been made an archdiocese in 969.
“In the 960s Byzantium had been trying to supplant German influence in Salerno and to this end may have engineered the rebellion which temporarily unseated John XIII, a pro-German pope. Prince Gisulf of Salerno, however, was allied both to the Greeks and to his Lombard neighbour Pandolfo, whom he had rescued some years before and who was staunchly pro-German and anti-Greek. When Gisulf was deposed and removed from office by a rebellious insurrection led by his brother Landolfo in 974, Pandolfo restored him as his vassal. When Gisulf died childless in 977 or 978, Pandolfo succeeded in Salerno in accordance with their prior agreement. The policy of the Greeks was a thorough failure and Pandolfo was the winner in south Italy. He had united all three of the Lombard principalities - Benevento, Capua and Salerno - and had even gained Spoleto and Camerino. He ruled a large bloc of territories that stretched as far north as Tuscany and as far south as the Gulf of Taranto. Pandolfo died at Capua in March 981.
“Pandolfo's lands were partitioned among his sons, who fought endlessly over the inheritance. His son Landolfo IV received Capua and Benevento, and Pandolfo II received Salerno. Emperor Otto II came down to Rome in 981, however, and Spoleto was given to Thrasimund IV, duke of Camerino. Pandolfo's nephew Pandolfo was given Benevento in a partition of Landolfo's territory in which Landolfo kept Capua. Finally, Manso I, duke of Amalfi, dispossessed Pandolfo II of Salerno in 981 and was confirmed by the emperor.”.2 GAV-30.
