      ;      Helen Spurlin [1994:V:39-41] claimed that Henry VAUGHT Sr. (1783-1840) and his wife Catherine WHITENBARGER (c1780-1840) "may have had" 8 sons and an unnamed daughter, and that one of of the sons may have been named "N. VAUGHT". According to Spurlin, this "N. VAUGHT" "was b ca 1823 in AL. He m Mary ca 1858. She was b ca 1824 in TN. They may have married in GA. Their first child was b in GA. They were in Jasper Co., TX in 1860. Children of N. Vaught and Mary were Frances Vaught, William M. Vaught, James Vaught, Joanna Vaught, and a girl b ca 1860 (siource -- 1860 C Jaspter Co., TX)." I have seen no other evidence from Spurlin that the name N. is based on anything other than the enumeration in the 1860 census referred to.
     Jeannie Hartwick is apparently a descendant of John Marshall VAUGHT (c1821-1873), through his daughter Joanna (m. John Henry VAUGHAN). She believes that the person identified in the 1860 federal census for Jasper Co., TX as "N. Vaught" is in fact "M. (Marshall) Vaught", her 2ggf and that the initial "N." was simply a recording error by the enumerator. She supports this with her knowledge of the children of John Marshall VAUGHT, includin a 3 year old dau. recorded in the 1860 census. John Marshall Vaught and his wife Mary Bowers and several of their children are identified on Find A Grave.
     GA Vaut Comment: There is circumstantial evidence that the "N. VAUGHT" in the 1860 census and the "John Marshall VAUGHT" in the Liberty Hill CEmetery (Williamson Co., TX) are the same person. There are two VAUGHT graves in the same graveyard, that appear to match the names of the children of N and mary VAUGHT in the census: "Wm. M." b ca 1853) in the census may be the William Marian VAUGHT (1853-1926) buried there; the "Joanna" (b ca 1823) in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses may be the Joanna (VAUGHT) VAUGHAN (be 1857) also buried there. There are other children linked to John Marshall VAUGHT's memorial page with names similar to the other two children listed in the 1860 census: one was buried in AR and the other elsewhere in Williamson Co., TX. However, it isn't clear if these links are made on the basis of sound genealogical evidence or just the similarity in given names.
     The 1870 census listing for "William FAUGHT" in Liberty Hill, Williamson Co., TX, provides the key link for the children as it shows seven children, all of whomb are shown on John Marshall's Find A Grave memorial page:

      3. Joanna b ca 1858 GA
      4. Bell Sarah b ca 1860 GA
      5. Laura b ca 1862 TX
      6. Emma b ca 1863 TX
      7. John b ca 1866 TX
(Francis had married McAfee Alexander Robbins in 1868.)
     I have no evidence that John Marshall was the brother of my Andrew Jackson, who was also identified by Spurlihn [1994:V:40] as a son of Henry and Catherine (WHITENBARGER) VAUGHT. The evidence of a link between John Marshall (JMV) and Andrew Jackson (AJV) doesn't seem too good from the detail I can see.
     According to the Hartwick FGS, JMV was born in AL in 1821. AJV was born in AL ca 1820. That is compatible. However, JMV apparently moved to GA (via TN where he married) sometime before 1850 (to be in the 1850 Calhoun Co. GA census) and then on to TX in early 1860 (after his dau. Belle was bornin GA i9 Oct 1859 and before the 1860 census on 16 July 1860). AJV came to TX between 1840 and Aug 1842. He was in AL for the 1840 census and was married in Lamar Co., TX on 22 Aug, 1842. AJV died in 1854 and was living in the Tarant/Johnson Co area at the time. Not near Jasper Co.
     Two brothers might travel to TX at different times and by different routes, but in looking at dozens of VAUGHT clan family members in the 1840-1860 period, siblings typically made important migrations together and settled near each other.
     Henry and VAUGHT, were born in Wythe Co., VA and married Catherine WHITENBARGER in TN in 1804. They seem to have moved on to AL soon after that. They both died in Franklin Co., AL. Helen Spurlin identified 8 possible children (all sons) of Henry VAUGHT (in probably order of birth):
     1. Therington: living in AL in 1837; no record after that.
     2. James McElder: married in AL in 1832, and moved to Rusk Co, TX between 1845 and 1850 (d. in 1850)
     3. William K.: married in AR in 1843 and appeared there in the 1850 census; no record after that.
     4. Henry, Jr.: living in AL for the 1850 federal and 1855 state censuses; no record after that.
     5. Montgomery: Living in AL in 1842; ; no record after that.
     6. Andrew Vaught: b ca 1820 in AL in Titus Co., TX in 1850.
     7. "N.": born ca 1825 in AL, had children in GA and one unnamed dau. (d. young?) in 1860 in TX.
     8. W. E.: born in AL, appeared in Madison Co. TX in 1860 census
     There are some discrepancies about children of Henry and Catherine as to who was born in TN and who was born in AL.
     I find the almost 20 years difference in dates of migration to TX by Andrew and John Marshall VAUGHT problematic, as siblings tended to move together in that period. Why did N./John Marshall go first to GA and then on to TX? There is no evidence of the other sons of Henry, Sr. having gone to GA. However, there is a Marshall and Mary VAUGHT in the 1850 census for Gordon Co., GA, with a 2 year old dau., Frances. Given the ages and birth states, this seems to be the same person as the N. VAUGHT in the 1860 census.^{2,1,3,4,5,6,7,8}
