Elizabeth Jane Petty was born on 11 February 1851 at Alabama, USA.1 She married Silas Perron Vaught, son of Benjamin Franklin Vaught and Sarah McAnally, on 15 August 1878 at Caddo Gap, Montgomery Co., Arkansas, USA,
; His 2nd wife; her 2nd husband.1
Elizabeth Jane Petty died on 14 March 1926 at Caddo Gap, Montgomery Co., Arkansas, USA, at age 75.1
Elizabeth Jane Petty was buried after 14 March 1926 at Bethel Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Arkansas, USA; From Find A Grave:
Birth: Feb. 11, 1851, Alabama, USA
eath: Mar. 14, 1926, Caddo Gap, Montgomery County, Arkansas, USA
~ Elizabeth JANE Petty Ellington-Vaught ~
ELIZABETH "JANE" PETTY was born on 2-11-1851 in Alabama.
Her parents were "Dr. John Petty" (b: 11-2-1827, Alabama; d: 9-19-1903, Montgomery County, Arkansas) & "Elizabeth J. Mullins" (b: 10-22-1831, Alabama; d: 10-15-1905, Montgomery County, Arkansas). Her parents were married on 1-28-1849 in Benton, Calhoun County, Alabama. They had 8 children with JANE being their 2nd. child. They came to Montgomery County, Arkansas in 1855 & settled there.
"JANE" married "Nathaniel Ellington" on 5-31-1868 in Montgomery County, Arkansas. Nathaniel fought during The Civil War with "The Caddo Rifles Company of the 4th. Arkansas Infantry of the CSA". He was imprisoned in Mississippi; when he was released, he was given a pistol & a mule & set-off across the bridge over the Mississippi River towards Caddo Gap, home. He was said to have walked with a limp after the Civil War which became progressively worse as he aged.
"JANE" & Nathaniel had 3 children:
~~William Jasper (Bill) Ellington, Sr., b: 5-4-1871; d: 1960;
~~Celia Ellington (1st. m: Van Steenwyk), b: Nov. 1872; d: 12-4-1934;
~~"John" Nathaniel Ellington, b: 4-11-1874; d: 3-17-1920.
JANE's father was prominent & prosperous in the area. He was friends & contemporaries with "Judge Silas Perron Vaught" (who was just 4 yrs. younger than JANE's father). JANE sought her father's counsel on her marriage to Nathaniel. She apparently wanted more for herself & her children than Nathaniel could provide. She filed for divorce, & it was apparently a big scandal in 1878. She was told by her fiancé (Judge Vaught) that she could bring her 3 Ellington children to his home when the two married. Nathaniel was not pleased with the divorce & only allowed her to take the 2 older children with her to her new marriage. He kept the youngest, "Good Boy" (John Nathaniel), with him; "Good Boy" was 4. This measure was said to punish JANE for her actions!
JANE married "Judge Silas P. Vaught" on 8-15-1878 @ Caddo Gap. [Silas had been married to Lucinda C. Tweedle (daughter of John & Katie Tweedle & granddaughter of William Tweedle, III); Silas & Lucinda had 9 children; she died in 1875.]
JANE & Silas had 3 children:
~~Garland L. Vaught, b: 1-26-1885; d: 6-27-1915;
~~Sallie E. Vaught, (m: West) b: 9-16-1887; d: 10-5-1972;
~~Henry "Grady" Vaught, b: 12-12-1889; d: 2-14-1962. Grady's grave has not been listed as-of-yet on find-a-grave. Here is his information: He was married to Cora Peel (daughter of John Wesley Peel & Mary Frances Robbins Peel) on July 12, 1909. They had 4 children: Nellie, Perry, Crystal, & Opal. He died in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi & was buried there.
JANE & Silas Vaught lived on a 1,120-acre farm @ Caddo Gap...where all 9 of his children with Lucinda & the 3 with JANE were born. Silas helped raise & educate Jane's Ellington children, his step-children, although the Ellington children remained very close to their birth father Nathaniel. William J. (Bill) Ellington, Sr. also became a lawyer & judge as his step-father had been.
Following Silas's death in 1901, she began share-cropping the 1,120 acres where she lived. She was said to have been: stern, business-minded, & responsible; but she had trouble with some of her share-croppers who felt that she did not share fairly. One of these was her youngest Ellington son, John Nathaniel, who left Caddo Gap in 1916 to do the same work in Riverby, TX following a bitter dispute with her. Unfortunately, he only got to farm 4 years in TX when he became ill with the flu. JANE traveled to Riverby to see him due to his severe illness, but he was too incoherent to talk with her. They did not patch-up their differences before he died in 1920. She was inconsolable at his loss.
JANE was generous & loving to her grandchildren. She often baked cookies & took apronsful to them. The children would scream, "It's Grandma coming with cookies!" as they saw her top the hill when they lived in Caddo Gap. She left each of them some inheritance when she passed away on 3-14-1926.

She was then a woman-of-means as she had married a judge, Silas Vaught. After Silas died in 1901, she had a share-crop farm where men like her son, John N., farmed her land & shared their profits w/ her. John N. felt she was not fair-enough with him & left for Riverby, TX to do the same work.
Cousin Troy West showed us the land where she donated the parcel for a public school.
The Ellington Granddaughters by John N.: Ethel, Christine, Lena, & Dora "Marie" said Grandma Vaught would bake an apronful of cookies & come over the hill & dump them on the table to the grandkids' delight!
She is buried between her 2 husbands: Nathaniel Ellington & Silas P. Vaught. She left some money to each of her grandchildren when she died.
