William Thomas Merritt Sr. died on 13 January 2006 at Walkersville, Kent Co., Maryland, USA, at age 84;
Obituary from Find A Grave:
"Mr. William Thomas Merritt Sr., 84, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Glade Valley Nursing Home in Walkersville, Md., after a five-month illness.
"
He was the widower of Marie LaBeau Merritt, who passed away Nov. 9, 2000.
"Born June 4, 1921, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Dr. James Black Merritt III and Ella Maude Townsend Merritt. A few days after he was born, the family returned home to Easton, Md. Dr. Merritt had planned the birth of his son in Philadelphia due to the Spanish flu epidemic; he thought the hospital in Philadelphia would be better equipped than the one in Easton at that time.
"William Merritt was raised in Easton and graduated from Easton High School in 1938. He attended college at the University of Maryland, where he studied engineering.
"To avoid the draft during World War II, he enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Program, and graduated from Navigation School in Monroe, La., on Nov. 14, 1942. He taught celestial and radio navigation to pilots in Orlando, Fla., and retired from the Army Air Corps as a Captain on Nov. 11, 1945. He returned to civilian life and was employed in the automobile industry for 10 years. He joined the Maryland National Guard in 1950, and served six years as an officer, much of that time in command of "F" Co., 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, based in Easton. He then took a position with the State Health Department as business manager at Victor Cullen State Hospital in Sabillasville, Md. He stayed at Victor Cullen, which changed to Juvenile Services for the Mentally Retarded. He retired after more than 30 years of service. After retirement, Mr. Merritt worked part-time with A.R.C. of Washington County.
"William Merritt had met Marie LaBeau on a blind date in Orlando in 1943. They married Feb. 4, 1944, and were together for 56 years.
"Mr. Merritt is survived by two sons, William T. Merritt Jr., M.D., and his wife, Helen, of Phoenix, Md., and Walter T. "Kip" Merritt and his wife, Joanne, of Frederick, Md; a brother, H. Llewellyn Merritt and his wife, Doris, of Bel Air, Md; and four grandchildren, William T. Merritt III, Ryan T. Merritt, Caitlin Merritt and Sarah Brooks.
"He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Merritt, in 2002.
"A memorial service will be Saturday, Jan. 21 at noon at Shrewsbury Parish Church, 12824 Shrewsbury Church Road, Kennedyville, Md. Internment will follow the service in the church cemetery, which borders the Merritts' ancestral property, owned by the family during the 1600's.
"In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. Arrangements are by Rest Haven Funeral Services, Skot Cody P.A., Frederick. Hagerstown Herald Mail - January 18, 2006."1
