Per Milesfiles: "20 Nov 1888 [8] - According to the Richmond Dispatch of this date, the news from Onancock, November 17, 1888 - Captain John Spence, the oldest inhabitant of Accomack county, died several days ago at his home on Sykes's Island. His exact age is not known, but from documentary evidence in his posession he could not have been less than one hundred and seven years old. Captain Spence contented that he was one hundred and twelve years old, having been born, as he claimed, in 1776, the year of American independence. He cliamed that, omitting the election of 1808, he had voted in twenty-one presidential elections, his first vote having been cast in 1797 and for Thomas Jefferson in 1800. This beats the record of Colonel Charlton, whose death at his home in Montgomery county at an advanced old age was recently reported in the Dispatich, and who is said to have voted in nineteen presidential elections. Sykes's Island, Captain Spence's home, is the banner Democrate precinct in the Sate, having cast 62 votes at the last election - all solid for Cleveland, Thruman and Kendall."4
