Born: 19 May 1722, Somerset Co., MD
Marriage (1): Sarah (Sally) Tyler about 1743 in Somerset Co., MD
Died: 18 Jul 1805-29 Apr 1806, Tangier Island, Accomack Co., VA
From "Crocketts of Tangier Island, Virginia"
"In the Chesapeake Bay on the Eastern Shore of the U.S., there is a little island by the name of Tangier. It is believed that Tangier Island in Virginia was settled by a John Crockett and his 8 sons in 1686 to raise cattle. This would have been 22 years before "Davy" Crockett's grandfather was born on the voyage to America and that there were already Crockett's in America before William's parents arrived. However, there is nothing to verify the belief that John Crockett and his sons first settled Tangier Island.
What is known is that the first Crockett of record on Tangier was Joseph Crockett. Joseph Crockett was the grandson of John Tyler of nearby Smith's Island. Joseph was bound to his uncle, Thomas Tyler to be a weaver and lived on Smith's Island until about 1744. In 1763 he was made constable of "Tangier Islands" and was given an area called "South Point" by John Fish in his will of April 4, 1765. In 1778 he used his inheritance from his grandfather John Tyler to buy another 475 acres of Tangier. In 1799 Joseph's son John acquired an additional 100 acres from Anthony West. The remaining land was to be sold. Today the island population is mainly Crockett and Pruitt families and their descendants."
Joseph Crockett first shows up in the Somerset Co., MD Tax Lists in 1739 as a dependent in his uncle Thomas Tyler Sr.'s household. This helps to establish his birth year at c1724.
Joseph Crockett was the executor of John Fish's will, written Apr 4 1765 and probated Apr 30 1766 in Accomack Co., VA. John Fish left all of "South Point", the whole patent belonging to me, to Joseph Crockett. He also gave Spencer Tyler all his part of "Hog Neck". He also named Lazarus Bacor, Jacob Tyler and David Tyler. Witnesses were Butler Tyler, Arthur Parks, and Sarah Tyler (AccW-1761/67:608)
Joseph married Sarah (Sally) Tyler, daughter of John Tyler and Mary (?), about 1743 in Somerset Co., MD. (Sarah (Sally) Tyler was born about 1725 in Somerset Co., MD and died in 1802 in Tangier Island, Accomack Co., VA.)

William Andrews (wife Anna Maria) sold this tract as 450 acres to Joseph Crockett. According to Whitelaw, it has been said that the island was first settled in 1686 by a John Crockett and his eight sons, who had come over from the Western Shore, but that does not seem to be substantiated by the records. The Crockett family is known to have been on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland at an early date. If they had possibly come to the island at the date indicated, they would have come as cattle-tenders or other tenants of the Scarburgh-West owners. There is no record of a Crockett owning land in Accomack County before this 1778 purchase, and not a Crockett will is recorded there, down to 1800."

Joseph Crockett was the executor of John Fish's will, written 4 Apr 1765 and probated 30 Apr 1766 in Acc Co, VA. John Fish gave all of South Point, the whole patent belonging to me, to Joseph Crockett. He also gave Spencer Tyler all his part of Hog Neck. He also named Lazarus Bacor, Jocob Tylor and David Taylor. Witnesses were Butler Tylor, Arthur Parkes, and Sarah Tylor (Acc Co Wills, 1761-1767, p. 608). There is a tombstone on Tangier Island which reads only "Crockett," with no given name, "1725-1802." This could possibly be the tombstone of Joseph Crockett who died in 1806, if the 1802 is faded."

"Land - they bought land 1778 tract A85, Tangier Island, Accomack Co, Virginia [6]

The following is research sent to VaLene Ewell Collings by Les Harrison:
Our Evans family does have history on Smith's Island, Maryland. In 1685 John Evans of Accomac purchased 200 acres of Pitchcroft on Smith's Island from Henry Smith. In 1701 he purchased 300 acres near Back Creek from William and Dorothy Jarman. In his will recorded in Accomac on January 6, 1720, he left to son John 200 acres, to son Mark 200 acres, to son Richard old plantation where Arthur Park lived, to daughter Mary all island called Point Comfort and 50 acres of Silverthorn Ridge as well as 50 acres to son Mark.
As my search continues, in reference 10, I found the name of John Evans in Accomac who is listed as an indentured servant in 1674. Going back to reference 1, in that year, John Evans II was 14 years old and according to reference 11, indentured servants served until age 21. This causes me to think that possibly John Evans I was also and indentured servant, which would agree with the Ferrar terms for sending a John Evans to Virginia. Again, this is a supposition on my part but makes me think that possibly John Evans I was the boy sent to Virginia be the Ferrars after being released from Bridewell in 1619. I repeat, this is supposition but it certainly causes me to consider the possibility.7

I repeat, this is supposition but it certainly causes me to consider the possibility.5

Les Harrison To VaLene Collings Today at 11:03 AM, 4 Jan 2016
I have been able to access the Ferrar Papers housed at Magdalene College, Cambridge and found handwritten evidence by Nicholas Ferrar of sponsoring a John Evans to the new world in 1619. You probably know of Nicholas Ferrar, an investor in the Virginia Company. I also found evidence in a 1624 census for John Evans in Accomack on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. What I haven't found, yet, is an age for this John Evans which I believe would pin down the relationship from John Evans I to John Evans II.
By the way, my great grandmother, Edith Twiford Evans, who is listed in the Ewell genealogy, roots go back to ancient Scotland and I have a good deal of information on that if there is any interest.
Sincerely, Les Harrison
The following is from Les Harrison, sent 5 Jan 2016 to VaLene Ewell Collings:
Evans Genealogy
Updated October 17, 2015
I started with the genealogy for Alonzo Evans1 that I discovered on the internet that someone from the Ewell family put together. I believe the Ewell connection is from Smith's Island Maryland and one of our relatives did in fact live on Smith's Island, and I'll write more about this later in this document. Starting with Alonzo F. Evans (our great grandfather who we all knew) and tracing back through the progression that follows.
Solomon Coleman Evans, Elijah P. Evans, Solomon Evans, Elijah Evans, Nathan Evans, John Evans (1690-1758), John Evans (1660 - 1721), John Evans (abt. 1625 - ?).
I then found a resource listing the 2, 7ships coming from England starting with the Jamestown Fleet in 1606. There is also a list of passengers by ship and arrival date and here I found the names Clement Evands in 1616, Richard Evans in 1618, William Evans in 1618, and John Evens in 1619. Evands and Evens are often considered variants of Evans. Also, I noticed in reference 7, the word seven was spelled seaven, further making me think Evens very easily could have been Evans. Additionally, I considered that a ships log entry could have easily misspelled Evans to Evens. Further research gives the name John Evans rather than Evens arriving in 1619 on the ship Mary Gold, also called Marigold.
In the work titled 4Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, 1607-1635, A Biographical Dictionary, it is stated that a John Evans came to Virginia in 1619 on the Marigold and on February 16, 1624 he was living in Elizabeth City (now called Hampton, Virginia). This same source also states that on December 31, 1619 an inmate at Bridewell in London by the name of John Evans was chosen to be sent to Virginia and that the Ferrars who were major investors in the Virginia Company planned to pay for his transportation (most likely Nicholas Ferrar based on further research I have done). In the 6The Complete Book of Immigrants, 1607-1670, it is stated that a John Evens was transported in 1619 on the Marigold to Treasurer's Plantation. Although this plantation was patented in 1624, the reference states that its owner, George Sandys, was already living there. The location of the plantation appears to be about where the Kingsmill Resort near Williamsburg is. Note George Sandys was treasurer for the Virginia Company. The list of ships in reference 2 states that John "Evens" muster point was in fact Treasurer's Plantation.
According to the census of 1624 he was living on the Eastern Shore (also stated in reference 5). I also noted that the list was made out on February 16, 1623 and these people had moved from the Western Shore (Jamestown and Vicinity) to the Eastern Shore to get away from marauding Powhatan Indians in 1622, and bad water.
Although it is supposition on my part, I think John Evans did muster from England to the new world at Treasurer's Plantation, moved to Elizabeth City (Hampton), and then moved to Accomac. I think it is not unlikely his name was still on the census for Elizabeth City in 1625 although he showed up on the 1624 census of Accomac. It would be helpful to know the age of this John Evans, and Cathy is working on getting me access to the Ferrar Papers at Magdalene College, Cambridge, England to determine if anything is said there about John Evans in that Nicholas Ferrar apparently sponsored his sailing to America. Note that according to reference 1, John Evans I who appears to have been born in 1625, married Sarah who was born sometime between 1620 and 1630. This leads me to believe the original John Evans fathered a son shortly after going to Accomac but so far I haven't found any records that substantiate that.
There is another possibility about who John Evans was. Around 1618, homeless children in London were being rounded up and placed in Bridewell prison, awaiting transportation to America where they would serve as apprentices. This matches the fate of John Evans mentioned above. The reference also states "the only existing record of them is in the Bridewell charge book." Looking back through the genealogical chart for Alonzo F. Evans, the John Evans I lists his birthday as about 1625 in Accomac. If as reference 8 states applies to this John Evans, it is possible that he was very young when he came to America, no record exists of his actual birth date, and 1625 was assigned from the census records for Elizabeth City for 1625. Evans is a Welsh name, and if he was a homeless child on the streets of London, it is not difficult to believe he was picked up and placed in Bridewell as stated elsewhere. If this is all a correct supposition, the next step, after consulting the Ferrar papers, is to attempt tracing John Evans in Wales, and I understand this is difficult to do.
As an additional note, our Evans family does have history on Smith's Island, Maryland.
I repeat, this is supposition but it certainly causes me to consider the possibility.
Thanks to Cathy, I was able to get access to the Ferrar Papers at Magdalene College, Cambridge and found several references to a John Evans. In the first instance, 12 Nicholas Ferrar created a list of 92 potential settlers he was willing to sponsor the cost of transporting to the new world. On the list is the name John Evans crossed off. I checked each of the names on the list against the lists in reference 2 and most of the names did not in fact appear on any ship and a few did sail on the Bona Nova in August of 1619. If John Evans did come over on the Mary Gold or Marigold, it makes sense his name would have been crossed off since he wasn't sailing on the Bona Nova. I also found a 13handwritten list by Nicholas Ferrar of moneys paid to transport settlers and John Evans is on that list. The fact that the last name was spelled Evans in both references does convince me the John Evens listed on the Marygold in reference 6 was really John Evans. In my research, I did notice a number of instances where a name was spelled more than one way for what appeared to be the same person. I also noted that on reference 13, where the letter "a" has a small loop where it connects to the back of the letter and could have been interpreted as the letter "e". In several material sources I have not referenced, I noticed that the writing is so heavily "curlicued "as to make it unreadable. So far, I have not been able to uncover any records giving the age of this John Evans. Whether he knew his age and documented it somewhere I do not know although it would be of great benefit if he did.
It is my belief that the John Evans I of reference 1 is the above John Evans, and I also believe the listed birthday of abt. 1625 is not correct. My guess is it may be closer to 1605.
I am sending this writeup to the researcher for the group that created reference 1 in hopes they will share their methods and results, and possibly in the future visit the Northampton County Virginia Records Office to do more research.
Another record of the presence of John Evans on the Eastern Shore, this time in the year 1623, is found in reference 14 in the fifth paragraph under the section titled The Early Settlement of the Eastern Shore.
