Memo:
Per Walczyk: "On 14 March 1796 in Somerset Co, MD John PARKS of Job bought "Hog's Neck and 25 acres of "Pitchcraft" from Job PARKS Sr. of Arthur elder (Somerset County Maryland Deeds., Somerset County Maryland Court House (Princess Anne MD), 0-31:337 (hereafter cited as Somerset County Maryland, Deeds)."3

John Parks (Sr.) and Mary "Polly" Evans appeared in the census of 1800 at Islands, Somerset Co., Maryland, USA;
This is one of two census listings that I have found which might be for John PARKS, SE. 100438. One is in the 'Islands," somerset Co., MD. the second is in Accomack Co., VA. Geographically, these are not so far apart. There is some evidence of John having been in Somerset Co., from birthin1756 to a land transaction on 14 April 1796. His sister, and her husband, James and Elizabeth (PARKS) SPENCE, seemed to have remained in Somerset Co., while his brother, Job PARKS, Jr. apparently settled in Accomack Co., VA around 1800. Again there are records for the name "Job PARKS" from both Somerset Co. and Accomack Co. for the same years.

The presence of multiple EVANS families on the same two 1800 federal census pages for Islands, Somerset Co., MD also lends credence to the likelihood that this is the same John PARKS and his son, John PARKS, Jr. on this page. John Sr. is listed between a James SPENCE (likely his brother-in-law) and John Jr. (his son. There are also many intermarriages between the PARKS and EVANS families, including John Sr.'s own wife (Mary "Polly EVANS), his brother Job's wife (Rhoda EVANS), and one of his sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law. There are two other PARKS, a Richard and a Charles (Charles might be one of John Sr.'s other sons), and one CROCKETT.

Islands, Somerset Co., MD
1800 United States Federal Census
It is not clear who the older woman in this household might be, but the other older male and female match John and Mary (EVANS) PARKS Sr. John PARKS #100438 is next door to a younger John PARKS, possibly his son, John Jr. #100619.

John Parks (Sr.) and Mary "Polly" Evans appeared in the census of 7 August 1820 at Election District 3, Somerset Co., Maryland, USA;
1820 United States Federal Census
There are three PARKS households on these two pages (pp. 432-4)
Line     Name
4     John PARKS <-- father of Reuben #71532 (line 8) and Charles #100471 (line 6)
6     Charles PARKS <-- Son of John PARKS #100438 (line 4), brother of Reuben #71532 (line 8)
8     Ruben PARKS <-- Son of John PARKS #100438 (line 4), brother of Charles #100471 (line 6)
     In the 1820 and 1830 censuses, Reuben's father is listed as "John PARKS". In the 1820 census (p. 433, line 4). The same tree also shows two brothers of Reuben named Charles PARKS (1755-1753) and John PARKS (1778-1862), so these other two PARKS households are likely related to Reuben: his father and brother or two brothers.
     Interestingly, there is a William CROSWELL (line 7) on the same page, who could be a relative of Ruben's wife Priscilla (CROSWELL).
There are also four EVANS households on the same page:

     Some Ancestry family trees such as the Craig Family Tree show Reuben Parks' mother to have been an EVANS: Mary Polly EVANS (1761-1832, dau. of a Richard EVANS (1738-1824). Mary Polly EVANS married Reuben's father, John Charles PARKS (1756-1847).

John Parks (Sr.) and Mary "Polly" Evans appeared in the census of 1 June 1830 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co., Virginia, USA;
1830 United States Federal Census
     There are John PARKS housholds listed in the 1830 federal census for Baltimore, Dorcheser, and Kent Counties., MD and in Accomack Co., VA. My understanding is that John PARKS Sr. # 100438 was born in Somerset Co., MD and that his son, John PARKS Jr. #100619 was also born there. Both were probably "watermen" (oyster fishermen).
     In 1830, John PARKS Sr. # 100438 (born) 1756) would have been ca 74 years old and classified in the census as aged 70-79. John PARKS Jr. #100619 (b. ca 1776) would have been ca 53 years old and classified in the census as aged 50-59.
     The PARKS and EVANS families intermarried multiple times over several generations. John PARKS Sr. # 100438 married an EVANS and had an EVANS brother-in-law and two EVANS sons-inlaw. Thus the presence of other EVANS families in the same census area (even the same census page) lends some support to the idea that a John PARKS on that same page might be either John PARKS Sr. # 100438 or John PARKS Jr. #100619.

Maryland
     There are no John PARKS listed in the 1830 census for Somerset Co., MD, but there are a total of three in Maryland: one in Dorchester Co., one in Kent Co., and one in Baltimore Co.
-- BaltimoreCo., MD: A single John PARKS, the only PARK household is listed. It is a young couple, both aged 20-29 (i.e., born 1801-1810), with no children. Thus, this listing is neither John PARKS Sr. # 100438 or John PARKS Jr. #100619.
-- Dorchester Co., MD: An Arthur and a John PARKS are listed next to each other. there are no EVANS on the page. This John PARKS and the oldest female in the houshole, are both aged 40-49, probably too young to be John PARKS Jr. #100619 and his wife.
-- Kent Co., MD: There is one PARK household (a John PARKS), as well as Jonathan RAISIN. (A PARKS descendant married into the RASIN line some years later.) There re no EVANS families on this page. This John Parks and the oldest female in the houshole, are both aged 50-59, and of the appropriate age range to be John PARKS Jr. #100619 and his wife.

     Thus, it is possible that John PARKS Jr. #100619 moved to Kent Co. sometime

Accomack Co., Virginia
There are two John PARKS's in the 1830 federal census for Accomack Co., VA. One is a "John Parks Sr." and the other is a John D. PARKS". They are side-by-side on the same page. (lines 226 and 27 on p. 347). There are a total of ten PARKS (PARKES) households on this census page, which is in alphabetical order, so does not necessarily represent physical proximity. Two of those listed (a Charles and one of the other John's) might be sons. of John PARKS Sr. #100438. Since the page is in alphabeticl order, there are no EVANS families on the same page, but

Mary "Polly" Evans and John Parks (Sr.) appeared in the census of 1800 at Islands, Somerset Co., Maryland, USA;

It is not clear who the older woman in this household might be, but the other older male and female match John and Mary (EVANS) PARKS Sr. John PARKS #100438 is next door to a younger John PARKS, possibly his son, John Jr. #100619.

Mary "Polly" Evans and John Parks (Sr.) appeared in the census of 7 August 1820 at Election District 3, Somerset Co., Maryland, USA;

17     Zachariah EVANS

     Some Ancestry family trees such as the Craig Family Tree show Reuben Parks' mother to have been an EVANS: Mary Polly EVANS (1761-1832, dau. of a Richard EVANS (1738-1824). Mary Polly EVANS married Reuben's father, John Charles PARKS (1756-1847).

Mary "Polly" Evans and John Parks (Sr.) appeared in the census of 1 June 1830 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co., Virginia, USA;

Richard "Old Dickie" Evans and Richard "Young Dickey" Evans appeared in the census of 1800 at Accomack Co., Virginia, USA;
Listings are found in the 1800 federal census for Richard EVANS in both Accomack Co., VA and in the census location of "Islands", Somerset Co., MD. Accomack Cu. and Somerset Co. border each other and each includes several Chesapeake Bay islands where these families lived, including Tangier Island in Accomack Co., and Smith Island in Somerset Co. However the borders of the two counties were last surveyed in 1924. I have not information on whether the EVANS family I am investigating, specifically Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 and his son Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464, were listed as being in the Accomack Co., VA records compiled by Ancestry or in the Somerset Co, MD images that were filmed and are also posted by Ancestry.
     There are four Richard EVANS listed in the 1800 census in VA and four in MD. There are no household age or gender details in the Ancestry compiled census records, so it is impossible to determine which Richrads these listings mght relate to.
     I would like to believe that Accomack was small enough that at least two of these were Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 and his son Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464, both of who were alive in 1800 and apparently living in Accomack Co. (based on other evidence.

Richard "Old Dickie" Evans appeared in the census of 4 August 1800 at Somerset Co., Maryland, USA;
I have no information on whether the EVANS family I am investigating, specifically Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 and his son Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464, were listed as being in the Accomack Co., VA records compiled by Ancestry or in the Somerset Co, MD images that were filmed and are also posted by Ancestry. I have also identified a third Richard EVANS #100521 who was aparently on Smith Island in Somerset Co., MD in 1800. This third Richard was the first counsin once removed of Richard #100440 and second cousing of Richard #100464 (and first cousin of his wife !). I don't have enough information on this third Richard's household to evaluate in a detailedmanner, but it is highly likely that he is one of four Richard EVANS record here.
     Futhermore, there are eight other EVANS households on this page (for a total of twelve), two PARKS households, and one CROCKETT household, out of a total of 26 householdsoln the page. To put this in some perspective:
-- There are only another five housholds on the next page, apparently also from the "Islands." for a total of only thirty-one families at this location:
-- EVANS: Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 had four EVANS brothers and an EVANS uncle all alive at in 1800 and possibly living in the same area.
-- PARKS: Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 had two PARKS brothers-in-law and two PARKS son-in-laws, possibly lliing in the same area.
-- CROCKETT: Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 (who had a CROCKETT wife), had a CROCKETT brother-in-law and a CROCKETTT son-inl-law, possibly lliing in the same area.

     There are three Richard EVANS listed in the 1800 census in Somerset Co., MD. and and one Richard EVANS "Jr.". All four listings are on the same census page.The census images show the age/gender breakdowns for the four households reported in MD. The age/gender data allow us to identify one of the four as possibly Richard Sr #100440 and XXX as possibly Richard Jr. #100464. In 1800:
-- Richard Sr #100440 was b ca 1738, thus ca 62 years old in 1800, and therefore falling in the 1800 census age group of "Free White Persons - Males - 45 and over"
-- Richard Jr. #100464 was b ca 1765, thus ca 35 years old in 1800, and therefore falling in the 1800 census age group of Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44

     Their wives also provide information to possibly identify the corect households:
-- Richard Sr #100440 was at the time married to Mary "Molly" CROCKETT, b c1748, thus ca 52 years old in 1800, and therefore falling in the 1800 census age group of "Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over"
-- Richard Jr. #100464. was at the time married to Rachel "Betanna" EVANS, b c1776, thus ca 24 years old in 1800, and therefore falling in the 1800 census age group of "Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25"

     Based on the ages of the oldest male in each household, only one of the MD listings might be Richard Sr #100440 (Census Listing #1), but it is a poor match. Paradoxically, this is the one listing for a "Richard EVANS Jr." The other three listings might be Richard Jr. #100464 based on the recorded ages for the oldest male in the household. However, the oldest female enumberated in Census Listing #1 is recorded too young to have been Richard Sr #100440's wife, Mary (CROCKETT).
     Of the remaining three census llistings, Listing #2 is in my assessment the best, though imperfect match for Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464. Listing #4 is a possible match (except for the large number o fmissing children. Listing #4 is in my assessment the least likely match for Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464.

Census Image #1: Possible Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 ? <- POSSIBLE
p. 36, line 16
Name     Richard Evans Jr
[Richard Evans Junior]
Home in 1800 (City, County, State)     Islands, Somerset, Maryland
Free White Persons - Males - Under 10     1 [1791-1800] <- No known son of this age
Free White Persons - Males -10 thru 15     1 [1785-90] <- No known son of this age
Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44     1 [1756-74] William b1775
Free White Persons - Males - 45 and over     1 [bef 1756] John Sr. c1738 <- CORRECT!
Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15     1 [1785-90] Rachel 1786
Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25     1 [1775-84] Mary (CROCKETT) c1748 <- WRONG!
Number of Household Members Under 16     3
Number of Household Members Over 25     2
Number of Household Members     6

Analysis: The age of the oldest male matches John and the ages for two chilren (William and Rachel) match. The age is wrong for Riichard Sr.'s wife, Mary is wrong by around 25 or more years and two sons are do not match the known chidren's by age.

Census Image #2: Possible Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464 ? <- POSSIBLE
p. 36, line 2
Name     Richard Evans

Number of Slaves     2
Number of Household Members Under 16     5
Number of Household Members Over 25     2
Number of Household Members     10

Analysis: If one assumes that Richard #100464 might have ad three unmarried sisters or some unidentified daughters, this household seems close to the fact I have recorded so far for Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464.

Census Image #3: Possible Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464 ? <- UNLIKELY
p. 36, line 21
Name     Richard Evans

Number of Household Members Under 16     1
Number of Household Members Over 25     2
Number of Household Members     4

Analysis: This household could also match Richard #100464,except for the fact that this Richard apparently had four or five chilren born by 1800 (3 sons and 1 or 2 daughters) and is would have been odd that so many small chilren would have been left out.

Census Image #4: Possible Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464 ? <- POSSIBLE

Number of Household Members Under 16     3

Number of Household Members     8

Analysis: This listing is similar to Listing #2 (above), with one fewer matching child and a missing young daughter (Rachel b. c1798) and missing young son (Teagle c1796 or Peter 1799 - only one son of this is recorded).20

Richard "Old Dickie" Evans appeared in the census of 1810 at Islands, Somerset Co., Maryland, USA;
Listings for a Richard EVANS are found ijn both the Accomack Co., VA and in "Islands", Somerset Co., MD. these counties border each other and each includes several Chesapeake Bay islands where these families lived, including Smith Island and Tangier Island. Today, Smith Island is in Somerset Co., MD, while Tangier Island is in Accomack Co., VA. I have also identified a third Richard EVANS #100521 who was aparently on Smith Island in Somerset Co., MD in 1800.
     There are four Richard EVANS listed in the 1800 census in VA and four in MD.
-- Four are reported in the Ancestry compiled census in Accomack Col., VA.
-- Four are reported in Ancestry's scanned census images in "Islands", Somerset Co., MD.

There are no details in the Ancestry compiled census records, so it is impossible to determine which Richrads these listings mght relate to. The census images do show the age/gender breakdowns for the four households reported in MD.
     I would like to believe that Accomack was small enough that at least two of these were Richard "Old Dickie" EVANS #100440 and his son Richard "Young Dickie" EVANS #100464, both of who were alive in 1800 and apparently living in Accomack Co. (based on other evidence.
     The age/gender data allow us to identify XXX of the four as possibly Richard Sr #100440 and Richard Jr. #100464. In 1800:
-- Richard Sr #100440 was b ca 1738 and ca 62
-- Richard Jr. #100464 was b ca 1765 and ca 35

Based on the ages of the oldest male in each household, one of the MD listings might be Richard Sr #100440 (Listing #1). The other three listings might be Richard Jr. #100464. The ages of the the oldest female help sort the listings further.
