John Scrope 8th Lord Scrope of Bolton
1510 – 22 Jun 1549
Around 1530 he married Catherine Clifford, daughter of Henry Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland in Skipton, Yorkshire.
They had 11 children, of whom the eldest was his successor, Henry Scrope, 9th Baron Scrope of Bolton. He lived in the family home in Bolton Castle in Wensleydale, Yorkshire.
In 1536 he was pressured to support the Pilgrimage of Grace, a popular uprising in the Yorkshire area against the religious reforms of Henry VIII, particularly the break with Rome and the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the policies of the King's chief minister, Thomas Cromwell, as well as other political, social and economic grievances.
He found himself obliged to grant sanctuary to Adam Sedbar, Abbot of Jervaulx, when the latter was on the run from the King's Commissioners, who had been sent north to round up the ringleaders. When the Commissioners arrived at Bolton Castle he fled to join his father-in-law at Skipton Castle but the Abbot was rounded up and ultimately executed. Before leaving the Commissioners fired the castle. However, because of the duress, he was deemed to have been put under he was forgiven and allowed to repair and reoccupy his home and retake his seat in Parliament.

Richard Cholmeley
Birth 1516, England
Death 17 May 1579 (aged 62–63), England
Burial All Saints Churchyard, Thornton-le-Dale, Ryedale District, North Yorkshire, England
High Sheriff of Yorkshire. Purchased Whitby Abbey, where he chiefly resided and built a grand house.
Sir Richard Cholmeley was born by 1516, firstborn son of Sir Roger Cholmley of Roxby and Thornton-on-the-Hill by Catherine, daughter of Sir Robert Constable of Flamborough. Richard succeeded his father on 28 April 1538. He was knighted on 11 May 1544 by the Earl of Hertford (brother-in-law to Henry VIII) during the English Army raid which had begun with a landing at Leith, a port near Edinburgh, on or around 3 May 1544. The English army marched on Edinburgh and began to burn the city, including Holyroodhouse, the king's palace, and the suburbs. The English forces were unable to take Edinburgh Castle, which was defended by cannon fire from the castle itself. English soldiers looted goods from Edinburgh, which were loaded onto ships at Leith. Cholmeley and others were knighted, then the English army burned towns and villages along their land route back to Yorkshire, England.
He first married by 1537, Margaret, daughter of William, 1st Lord Conyers of Hornby. They had 3 sons and at least 3 daughters.
He married secondly by 1556, Catherine, daughter of Henry Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland, widow of John, 8th Lord Scrope of Bolton (who had died on 22 June 1549) with whom she had had eleven children. Richard and Catherine had at least 1 son Henry and 2 daughters.
