He was also heir to his uncle William de Courtenay (died 1419). He was married about 1426 to ELIZABETH HUNGERFORD, daughter of Walter Hungerford, K.B., K.G., of Farleigh Hungerford, Somerset, and Heytesbury, co. Wilts, 1st Lord Hungerford, Lord Treasurer of England, Speaker of the House of Commons, by Katherine (of Magna Carta Surety descent and descendant of Charlemagne), daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Peverell, of Whelmston in Colebrook, Devon, Parke, Hamatethy and Penhale, Cornwall. They had seven sons and four daughters. In 1440, he was joint commander of a fleet to repress pirates. In 1445, he obtained licence for his ship Trinity Cou an unknown person tenay to take pilgrims to St. James in Galicia. SIR PHILIP COURTENAY died on 16 Dec. 1463. His widow died on 14 Dec. 1476.
