Archbishop of Canterbury. He served in this position from July 30, 1381 until his death. The son of Huge de Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon, his exact date of birth is unknown. He received his education at Stapeldon Hall (now Exeter College), Oxford, Oxfordshire, England and became its chancellor in 1367. After serving in several prebendary positions, he became Bishop of Hereford (1370 to 1375), followed by Bishop of London (1375 to 1381) before being appointed Archbishop of Canterbury following the death of Simon Sudbury who was killed in June 1381 during the Peasants' Revolt. In 1386 he was one of the commissioners appointed to help reform the kingdom and the royal household of King Richard II.
