Gerald (Geraldus Cambrensis) de Barri was born in 1146 at Tenby, Pembrokeshire, England.2
Gerald (Geraldus Cambrensis) de Barri died in 1223; Burke's Extinct Peerages says d. ca 1215.1,2
; "Gerald, so well known as Giraldus Cambrensis, from Cambria, the ancient name of Pembrokeshire, in which county he was born in the year 1146, at Tenby, or at the castle of Mainarpir. About the time of the birth of Philip the August, we find him then twenty years of are, a student at Paris. He was subsequently prebendary of Hereford, and being a person of great learning was elected in 1176 by the chapter of St. David's, bishop of that see; but he declined the election, because unsanctioned, according to law, by the king, and passed a second time into France, to pursue his studies at Paris, where he became so celebrated that he was chosen in 1179 professor of canon law, by the university; he rejected the honour, however, in expectation of more solid advantages at home. In four years afterwards, he was invited to court by King Henry II., and appointed one of the royal chaplains. In 1185, he accompanied John, Earl of Moreton (afterwards King John), as his private secretary, into Ireland, and employed five years' residence there in the collection of materials for writing the Topography of Ireland, and the Vaticinal History of its Conquest; and having already written a description of England and Wales, he travelled to Jerusalem, and wrote "De Mirabilibus Terra Sanctae". Upon his return, his uncle David, bishop of St. David's, made him archdeacon of Brecknock; in which capacity he assisted, anno 1188, Baldwin, archbishop of Canterbury in preaching the Christian doctrine to the Welsh, and inciting them to the Holy War. But in 1197, Jeffry Fitz-Piers, Earl of Essex, having been made justiciary of England, and having marched with a great force into Wales, was so much incensed against Giraldus, by the bishop of Bangor's insinuations of his being an enemy to the king, that he seized upon all his lands at Brecknock, and passing, on his return, through Gloucester, directed a precept to the archdeacon of Oxford to take into his hands all the revenues Giraldus had within his archdeaconry; whereof Gerald complained by letter to the bishop of Ely, the dean of London, and the archdeacon of Bucks. setting forth that among his other sufferings, he had been dis-seized of his prebend of Hereford and his church of Chesterton, in Oxfordshire. He afterwards refused the bishopric of Leighlin and Ferns; but accepted, in 1199, that of St. David's. He could not, however, obtain a confirmation from the Holy See, being opposed by Geoffry, prior of Lauthony, nominated by Hubert, archbishop of Canterbury, which caused his resignation of the archdeaconry. He d. about the year 1215, and was buried in the cathedral of St. David's."2 He was leading writer about history.1,3
