He was 11th Earl of Kildare, as which restored by Act of I Parl 23 Feb 1568/9, also 1st EARL OF KILDARE and BARON OF OFFALY (both I), so cr 13 May 1554 (before the reversal of the attainder), with precedence of the earlier forfeited Earldom.1
; GERALD FitzGERALD, 11th Earl of Kildare, as which restored by Act of I Parl 23 Feb 1568/9, also 1st EARL OF KILDARE and BARON OF OFFALY (both I), so cr 13 May 1554 (before the reversal of the attainder), with precedence of the earlier forfeited Earldom, called 'The Wizard Earl', PC (I March 1557/8), JP (Cos Dublin and Kildare 1556); b 25 Feb 1525; aged ten at the time of his half-brother's giving himself up, he was spirited away by well-wishers anxious to keep him out of HENRY VIII's clutches to his sister Mary (see below), to whom he was conveyed in a covered basket while in the throes of smallpox; from Mary he was bundled off to his aunt Eleanor and from her he was shipped to the Low Countries, arriving in Liège aged 15; from there he subsequently went to Rome, reportedly doubled back to Nantes, in western France, where the French were alleged to be getting ready a fleet to invade Ireland; also, however, helped the Knights 'of Rhodes' repel what contemporaries refer to as the Moors, though since the Kts of St John had lost Rhodes to the Ottoman Turks in 1522 this may refer to the Knights of St John at Malta; entered service of Cosmo de' Medici, Duke of Florence, who appointed him Master of his Horse; went to England following EDWARD VI's accession 1547, his estates being restored him 1552; ktd c 1552; supported Lady JANE GREY's candidature for the Crown 1553 but after MARY's coming to the throne took a leading part in suppressing Sir Thomas Wyatt's Revolt 1554, hence the revival of the Earldom in his favour some months later; apparently sympathetic to rising led by the Earl of Desmond 1574, hence arrested 1575 and sent over to London, where imprisoned by Jan 1575/6; nevertheless allegedly helped suppress a further rising stirred up by the Earl of Desmond in Munster with Spanish aid 1579-82; again imprisoned on suspicion of subversion first in Dublin then in the Tower of London 1580; allowed to go back to Ireland 1583; m 29 May 1554 Mabel (d 25 Aug 1610), sis of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montagu, and d 16 Nov 1585.1

He was 11th Earl of Kildare, as which restored by Act of I Parl 23 Feb 1568/9, also 1st EARL OF KILDARE and BARON OF OFFALY (both I), so cr 13 May 1554 (before the reversal of the attainder), with precedence of the earlier forfeited Earldom.1
; GERALD FitzGERALD, 11th Earl of Kildare, as which restored by Act of I Parl 23 Feb 1568/9, also 1st EARL OF KILDARE and BARON OF OFFALY (both I), so cr 13 May 1554 (before the reversal of the attainder), with precedence of the earlier forfeited Earldom, called 'The Wizard Earl', PC (I March 1557/8), JP (Cos Dublin and Kildare 1556); b 25 Feb 1525; aged ten at the time of his half-brother's giving himself up, he was spirited away by well-wishers anxious to keep him out of HENRY VIII's clutches to his sister Mary (see below), to whom he was conveyed in a covered basket while in the throes of smallpox; from Mary he was bundled off to his aunt Eleanor and from her he was shipped to the Low Countries, arriving in Liège aged 15; from there he subsequently went to Rome, reportedly doubled back to Nantes, in western France, where the French were alleged to be getting ready a fleet to invade Ireland; also, however, helped the Knights 'of Rhodes' repel what contemporaries refer to as the Moors, though since the Kts of St John had lost Rhodes to the Ottoman Turks in 1522 this may refer to the Knights of St John at Malta; entered service of Cosmo de' Medici, Duke of Florence, who appointed him Master of his Horse; went to England following EDWARD VI's accession 1547, his estates being restored him 1552; ktd c 1552; supported Lady JANE GREY's candidature for the Crown 1553 but after MARY's coming to the throne took a leading part in suppressing Sir Thomas Wyatt's Revolt 1554, hence the revival of the Earldom in his favour some months later; apparently sympathetic to rising led by the Earl of Desmond 1574, hence arrested 1575 and sent over to London, where imprisoned by Jan 1575/6; nevertheless allegedly helped suppress a further rising stirred up by the Earl of Desmond in Munster with Spanish aid 1579-82; again imprisoned on suspicion of subversion first in Dublin then in the Tower of London 1580; allowed to go back to Ireland 1583; m 29 May 1554 Mabel (d 25 Aug 1610), sis of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montagu, and d 16 Nov 1585.1
