Reference: Per McMurtry [2013]:
"Thomas Todd was born about 1749 in PA and came with his parents to Rowan Co NC as a young man about 1770. He married Elizabeth Young in 1786. In 1789, he and his brother Joseph sold the land inherited from thier father Thomas as well as 100 acres gotten by grant by Joseph in 1786. By 1792, he and his brother Joseph and his married sisters Ester Lewis, Jemima Wagle, and Elizabeth Cox all arrived in Madison Co KY. There is a marriage of Thomas Todd to Sarah Cox in 1779 in Rowan Co; this could have been a first marriage of Thomas Todd b 1749. Thomas died in 1814 and left a will naming wife, Elizabeth, and leaving his estate to Levi Todd, "son of my bro, Joseph Todd". Rowan County, North Carolina Marriage Records 1754-1866 by Frances T. Ingmire made an error in her book and has Elizabeth Young m. to Joseph Todd on 18-Dec-1786. The bond was signed by Joseph Todd for the marriage of Thomas Todd to Elizabeth Young. The marriage bond from the Div of Archives and Records Management in NC, reportedly was signed by James Scrivner and Joseph Todd. James Scrivner was also a migrant from Northampton Co PA and also made the migration to Madison Co KY. The following is the first group that went to Madison County from Rowan, based on the 1795 tax list: Todd, Joseph 1748 Madison County son of Thomas Todd/Elizabeth Unknown. Todd, Thomas Sr 1749 Madison County son of Thomas Todd/Elizabeth Unknown. Todd, Thomas Jr 1771 Madison County son of Joseph Todd b 1748 & Ann Crose Todd, Isaiah 1770 Madison County son of Joseph Todd b 1748 & Ann Crose Sr and Jr used to distinguish between same names and not necessarily father and son. So we have two sets of brothers as the first Todd arrivals. Thomas Sr listed on Otter Creek with 123 acres for the time period of 1801-1809, though the first deed we have for him is for 23 acres on Otter Creek in 1808 (Book F, p 687). Thomas, or more accurately his estate, sells 128 acres on Otter Creek in 1816 (Book L, page 430). at Citation.1
In Thomas Todd's will dated 31 October 1777 at Rowan Co., North Carolina, USA, Thomas Todd was named as executor; from Cox (p. 68): "Thomas Todd will was made 31 Oct 1777 while sick and weak - Will Book A, p. 255 in Rowan co., NC."

Reference: Per McMurtry [2013]: "In 1757, Ebenezer Fairchild, a Baptist preacher, visited Ephraim Coxe in the Jersey Settlement on the Yadkin River and in his journal recorded that a woman there told him she had lived there for six years. That would indicate Ephraim may have arrived in North Carolina as early as 1751. (Doris, citing A History of Watauga County) (Doris has also examined the records of the Jersey Baptist Church for later years and found that Sarah Todd, widow of Moses Cox who married Thomas Todd, was a member of that church.) I think that Thomas Todd married (1) Sarah Cox in 1779 and (2) Elizabeth Young in 1786 and that this second marriage was the Elizabeth Todd widow of Thomas in Madison Co KY in 1814 and the Elizabeth wife of Thomas mentioned in a Rowan Co deed of . at Citation.1

Caleb (I) Todd was born between 1686 and 1693 at England (prob.)5
     GAV-6.

Reference: Per McMurtry [2013]:
"Caleb Todd was one of the children of Joseph Todd d 1699 by Joseph's second wife Joanne Swift. He was born sometime in the 1680s or 1690s, but we don't have any way to pinpoint this more precisely. Since his brother Joseph moved to Bucks County, Caleb seems also to have gone that route but further north in the county.
"There is a Caleb Todd who was appoinated overseer in 1745 in Durham Township of Bucks County (History of Bucks County, 1876, p 642) which lay in the far north of Bucks County and included what became Williams Township in Northampton County.
"A Caleb Todd had a 1742 land warrant survey that was resurveyed in 1782 in Williams Township. (Williams Township lay south of Bethehem PA where a Caleb, Thomas and Benjamin all appeared in the 1760s tax lists for Northampton County.) This land was patented to Henry Miller in 1797.
"In 1752, in Northampton County, a Caleb Todd was an administrator of the estate of Thomas Richards. This could be the same Caleb Todd as was associated with Williams Township especially if his son Caleb was not born until 1734 (based on Caleb the son being 31 at birth of first child in 1765) and hence being too young to be the Caleb of the estate administration. Richards Thomas ltr of Adm granted Isaac Richards, Caleb Todd & Joseph Richards all of Northampton Co, yeoman 24 Nov. 1752. I am unable to determine who this Richards family was; however, there was a Joseph Richards 1733-1816 who died in Williams Township.
"We also have a report of a Caleb Todd selling land to a Lewis Enger though we have no reference to where this sale took place. Since there were no Todds in Northampton County in the 1770s and early 1780s based on published tax lists in the Pennsylvania Archives, it would appear that the Caleb Todd who had the land resurveyed in 1782 could have been Caleb Todd b abt 1730-40 of Rowan County. Since the land was not patented until 1797, the land might have been released after Caleb Todd's death in 1795.
"This suggests that the Caleb Todd who was overseer in 1745 acquired the land warrant for this land in 1742, but somehow the right to the land devolved to Caleb Todd of Rowan Co. Other interpretations might also be possible.
"This throws a monkey wrench into our efforts to sort out the origins of the Todds. If Caleb Todd was in the Bethlehem area in 1745, then he could have been the father of Thomas, Caleb and Benjamin, rather than his brother Thomas (died 1733 Philadelphia) being that father
"At this point, we have no way to sort this out, but we are placing the three brothers as sons of Caleb based on the assumption they were brothers and based on Caleb being the only Todd in the Northampton County area old enough to have fathered the three boys.
"Nothing more about Caleb is known, but it is tempting to consider that he may have been the ancestor of the mysterious Joseph Todd b 1770-80 d 1819 in Fauquier Co Virginia. DNA from this Joseph matches the rest of the family but no documentary evidence of where this Joseph connects to the family has been found.
Notes and Documentation
"Caleb Todd warrantee for a survey dated 16 Apr 1742 with warrant dated 9 Feb 1743, resurveyed in 1872 to Caleb Todd. (Survey C 232, p 174). The land was patented to Henry Miller 24 June 1796, (Patent Book: P 33, 198.) Neighbors on the survey were Benedict Lutz, George Laubach, Jacob Younker, Frederick Fretchy, Conrad Trinkle and Conrad Hoot. Benedict Lutz 1735-1818 died in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton Co; There was a Jacob Schimer who died at Redington, Lower Saucon Township, whose estate has accounts related to Benjamin Todd (case for work done) and Benedict Lutz and Conrad Hoot. There was a Bernhardt Miller 1722-1792 who died in Williams Township who had a son George Heinrich Miller who was probably the Henry Miller who acquired Caleb Todd's land. We therefore assume that the Benjamin, Thomas and Caleb in the 1760s tax lists are sons of Caleb Todd of the 1740s records mentioned above.
"Note the following agreement written in 1788 refers to land that once was that of Caleb Todd and Ulrich Sleepy. Presumably this is a clue as to where Caleb Todd lived in Northampton Co before moving to Rowan County: Articles of Agreement, Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.      "There was a Caleb Todd who married in Lymington in England in 1736 (Hampshire Marriage Register of Bishop of Winchester 1689-1837: Caleb Todd Jr of Lymington m. Sarah Parsons 28-Aug-1736). It is not clear what relationship this Caleb has to Joseph Todd d 1699 nor to the Caleb Todd who had a warrant for land in 1743 in Bucks Co nor to the Parson family of Philadelphia.
"All Caleb's sons went to Rowan County between 1768 and 1772 and settled in the Jersey Settlement along the Yadkin River. This area was located below (southeast) the forks of the South and North Yadkin River The Trading Camp Settlement of 1750 was across the river on the West Side. The earliest families were in this settlement as early as 1745. According to First Families of Jersey Settlement by Ethel Stroupe, "The first settlers were Hopewell citizens who migrated aft being swindled by Proprietors and royal Governors, especially Dr. Daniel Coxe and his son, Col Daniel Coxe, two powerful and greedily villainous Proprietors, in The Coxe Affair. What these Jersey men endured in Hopewell directly affected the Yadkin's Revolutionary generation, explaining why Jersey Settlement had reacted so violently against NC's corrupt Governor William Tryon's sticky-fingered royal officials, John Frohock, Rowan Court Clerk, and Edmund Fanning. King's Attorney, whose thievery and injustices caused the 1771 Regulator War (considered by historians the first true battle of the American Revolution), and caused Charles Lord Cornwallis to call central North Carolina 'a hornet's nest of rebellion.' The earliest families came from Hopewell Twp, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where some had been members of Pennington's Presbyterian Church, and others were Quakers and Baptists who baptized their children in St. Mary's Episcopal Church for practical, political reasons." Swearing Creek, where we know Benjamin settled, is where Thomas Smith received land in 1745/6. 'He fled Hopewell with John Parke and had rebelled so strongly in Hopewell that he became a fugitive and died at his home on Swearing Creek. At least 22 of the 50 families who lost both lawsuit and land in the infamous Coxe Affair eventually moved to Jersey Settlement.'" at Citation.5
; NB:
On 1 May 2022, I began making several important changes in my TODD family line. There were a number of different TODD families who settled in the American colonies, coming from the United Kingdom. A group of TODD family researchers, with results published by Richard McMurtry [2013] [2022], have built an ancestry with a William TOD as the progenitor of my line.
I have found that I have two lines of descent from Joseph TODD (c1748-1810) and his wife Anna Maria CROUSE/GROSE (c1750-bef 1810), my 4th great grandparents. The first line is from their son, Isaiah TODD (1772-1840) and his first wife, Prudence ALEXANDER (1776-1852). The second line of descent is through their daughter, Nancy TODD (c1790-aft 1870) and her second husband, Armstrong HART (c1776-1829).
My earlier version (v.A) of the ancestry of Joseph TODD (c1748-1810) was as follows (in Ahnentafel form):
Version A
1 Joseph TODD (c1748-1810)
2 Thomas TODD (1723-1777)
3 Elizabeth CUMMINS (unk-1772)
4 Joshua TODD (1681-1719)
6 Richard CUMMINS (1670-1729)
7 Sarah PARSONS (unk-unk)
8 Joseph TODD (1645-1699)
9 Joane SWIFT (1650-unk)
16 John TODD (1594-1677)
17 Elizabeth MALLORY (unk-unk)
32 (FNU) TODD (unk-unk)

My current revisions (v.B), based on the work published by McMurtry, now shows:
Version B
1 Joseph TODD (c1748-1810) - same as v.A
2 Thomas TODD (1723-1777) - same as v.A
3 Elizabeth CUMMINS (unk-1772) - same as v.A
4 Caleb TODD (1686-unk) - brother of no. 4 (Joshua) in v.A
6 Richard CUMMINS (1670-1729) - same as v.A
7 Sarah PARSONS (unk-unk) - same as v.A
8 Joseph TODD (1645-1699) - same as v.A
9 Joane SWIFT (1650-unk) - same as v.A
16 William TOD (c1624-unk) - replaces no. 16 in v.A

My earlier work was based on a combination of earlier version (pre-2012) of McMurtry's work and a number of other pedigrees published on various websites and published research (e.g., Paxton [1897:129]. One source of early errors (corrected by McMurtry's later publications) was the confusion of two different men named Thomas TODD who lived at the beginning of the Revolutionary war. In McMurtry's words: "The misleading information about there being two Thomas TODDs in Rowan County came from a DAR record which erroneously identified the Thomas Todd who died while serving in the Revolutionary War as the Thomas of Rowan County."
Much of McMurtry's later published TODD family genealogy is based on some rather extensive DNA analyses of samples from hundreds of Todd family descendants and a much more extensive review of early records. This work helped to pinpoint Caleb TODD (1686-unk) as the probable father of Thomas TODD (1723-1777), rather than Caleb's brother, Joshua (1689-1719), as I had earlier shown. The record of Joseph TODD as a son of William TOD is from an Eling (Southamptonshire, England) Parish Register baptism record recorded by McMurtry as "Joseph and Benjamin, sons of William Tod, 15-Jan-1645". McMurtry also records another likely son of William TOD: "Todd Samuel, son of William Tod of Eling, Yeo to John Swift, glazier, for 7 years from date of indenture, 23-Dec-1678. Entered 14-Jun-1683." (citing the Calendar of Southampton Apprenticeship Registers 1609-1740).7,8,9,10

In the name of God, Amen; On the second day of March Anno Domis(1698): I, Joseph Todd of Eling, in the County of Southamptonshire, being in perfect memory, thanks be unto God for the same, and considering the frailty and uncertainty of this life, do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, First of all, I resign my soul into the hands and protection of Almighty God, my maker, and everlasting preserver, and my body I commit to the earth from whence it was taken, and for my worldly goods, which God in mercy hath lent and bestowed upon me, I do give and bequeath as followeth:

Lastly, all the residue of my money, goods, chattels and credits, I give unto my loving wife, Joanne, whom I do make and appoint to be sole executor of this my Last Will and Testament, and also I do nominate, desire, and appoint John Swift, the older, John Swift, the younger, Henry Abbot, and Pete (Peter) Chamberlyne to be overseers of this my Last Will and Testament. John B. Todd died circa 1769 at Rowan Co., North Carolina, USA.3
.4 He was a witness to From Ancestry - Notes on the TODD and THORNTON families
"     The most important family connection with the Thortons for more than 170 years was the Todd family. Both the Thorton and Todd families were living in the western part of North Carolina in the last part of the eighteenth century. It is not known if they met with the Thornton family while the Todds lived in Rowan County 60 miles away, but future meetings would create some very close bonds.
"     The Todds had been in the United States for at least 100 years earlier. The earliest Todd found is John who was born around 1619 in Eling, Southamptonshire, England and married Elizabeth Mallory. His son Joseph migrated to Pennsylvania in late seventeenth century and died there in 1699. The direct line progressed through Joseph Jr., Joshua, and John, born about 1705. John must have moved to Easton, Northampton County Pa in the early eighteenth century, where his son Benjamin was born in 1725.
"     Benjamin and his wife Sarah Griffin were married in 1750 and had nine children, all born in Easton, PA between 1752 and 1764. Sarah could trace her line back to her great grandfather, William Buckman, who emigrated from England with William Penn on the ship "Welcome" in 1682. They migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina, where Benjamin and sons Caleb and Peter are on the 1772 tax roll. At the time they settled in North Carolina, Rowan County extended into western NC to the edge of Burke County. When the Revolutionary War started four of the Todd boys participated. Peter served in Captain Robert Moore's North Carolina militia on an exhibition against Cherokee Indians. Joseph was a private in the militia in 1772. Benjamin Jr. served 8 months in 1777 with Captain Davis' Company as a private in the militia. Thomas volunteered for 14 months in Captain David Cowan's NC militia. Close to the end of the Revolutionary War in 1781 Thomas served as a substitute for his brother Benjamin. He spent two more months as a private in Captain James Straig's Company of Light horse under Col. Davis in the NC Troops.
"     Peter Todd is the direct connection with the Thornton family. In 1779, following his service in the War, he married Hannah Cornelison who was born in Loudoun County, Virginia. Peter was a wealthy landowner, with 150 acres on the south side of Lick Creek and 400 acres on the Abbott's Creek, in a section of Rowan County that later became Davidson County. It was too far from Burke and Wilkes County for the Todds to be considered neighbors of the Thornton and Owen families.
"     Migration to Kentucky the first of the families to move to Kentucky was the Owen family. On 12 Sept 1793, Barnett and Frances sold 115 of their remaining acreage in Lunenburg and on 14 Dec 1798, sold 100 acres in Wilkes County. This sale of land continued as the Owen families prepared for their move to Kentucky in the early 1790's. Barnett and family were already in Madison county, KY in time to be listed in the 1795 census. Barnett's brother William was listed in the neighboring county, Clark, in the same census. There are records of marriages of 10 Owen children in Madison County, KY from 1795 to 1813. The marriages for the first three- Sally, Frances, and Jemima- were in 1795 and 1796. Because their marriages were recorded right after they arrived in Kentucky, the young men were probably part of the migrating families from North Carolina. If not, the girls were quick to marry newly found Kentucky boys.
"     The Todd families were also ready to migrate to Kentucky. On 19 mar 1796, Benjamin Todd sold 525 acres of land in Rowan County. Records of sale of Peter's land have not been found, but the Todd families migrated to Kentucky sometime between 1796 and 1799. By 1800 Peter and his family were listed in the Madison County, KY census.
"     It is not known if the Todd families knew members of the Owen family or the Thornton family before the migration. The Todd families lived about 60 miles from the Thornton family in Burke and the Owen family in Wilkes but they could have accidentally met each other as they passed through the counties toward Kentucky just before the end of the century. Instead of joining them, William and patsy would stay in North Carolina a little longer. William was listed as overseeing the road from Silver Creek to the bridge on Gunpowder Creek in Burke County in Jan 1797. William was still in Burke county when the 1800 census was taken.
"     The Todd and Owen families settle in Madison County, KY, where they are listed in the 1800 and 1810 census records. William Thornton is not listed in Madison County but in Clark county, just across the Kentucky River that forms the northern boundary of Madison County. The Thornton family must have lived close to access across the Kentucky River because all marriages for the family are recorded in Madison County.
"     William Thornton to Sally "Sallie" Todd. When they were married 9 Dec 1813, Willi was 21 and Sallie was 20. The same day they were married, Sallie's brother, William Todd, married Elizabeth Owen, Patsy (Owen) Thornton's youngest sister. Elizabeth was 25 years younger than her sister Patsy. Peter Todd's father, Benjamin Sr., died in Madison County earlier in 1810. When Peter's son and daughter left Kentucky, Peter was 60 years old and remained there until his death.
"     James Thornton, Willi's youngest son, and Sarah had 9 children while they lived in Callaway County. One son, Levi, was born in 1828 and died 20 years later from fighting in the Mexican War in 1846 through 1848. One of their daughters, Nancy Jane, would later marry into the Todd family.
"     William Thornton, and Sallie Todd second child was William Todd, born5 Apr 1817. His first name continued the family tradition of passing the father's name on to the oldest son. William's middle name, Todd was in honor of his mother's family name. It was also prophetic because 20 years later he would marry one of Uncle Jesse Todd's daughters. Sallie (Todd) Thornton's older brother Jesse Todd grew up with the Thorntons in Kentucky and traveled with them to Missouri. Jesse Todd also grew up with Lucy Isabell Dalton whom he married in Madison County and had 8 children. Jesse became a preacher in the Primitive Baptist religion, served churches in Callaway and DeKalb counties and officiated at several of the family's weddings. His children and those of his sister, Sallie (Todd) Thornton, had a close affection for each other. The connections with the Thornton and Todd families became very complicated with an aunt becoming sister-in-laws and nieces and nephews becoming son or daughter-in-laws. This arrangement was not that unusual at the time. In the early history of the settlements, marriage occurred very frequently among kin. William Todd Thornton was the first of three Thornton brothers to marry their first cousins in the Todd family. In 1837 he married Hannah Todd and year later they would have the first of their 15 children.

John Todd died in 1677 at Eling, Southamptonshire, England.
Reference: From Ancestry - Notes on the TODD and THORNTON families
