JOHN, Ld of the Isles, who resigned his Lordship, estates and arms to the KING OF SCOTS, c 1494, which, following on this or subsequent proceedings for treason against his above-mentioned legitimated heirs, were held to have fallen to, and were annexed to the Crown, and the title "Ld of the Isles" was subsequently made part of the style of the Heir to the Throne. Thereafter Clan Donald was until 1660 treated as Chiefless, and the respective major branches thereof as distinct tribes and families, the original stem being under forfeiture.³
