In 1086, Bereford was a berewick composed of three caruscates of land to the manor of Gilling, and another caruscate of land there was 'soke' of that manor, according to Domesday Book. This meant that it was free from having to pay service fees to the manor. Bereford is on the south bank of the Tees River halfway between Darlington and Barnard's Castle.
