Samuel Miles Green , Gen. died on 21 December 1878 at Buffalo Run, Patton Township, Centre Co., Pennsylvania, USA, at age 81.1
; Biographicals and Genealogies of Centre Co., PA Green, Gen. S. Miles, died in Patton township December 21, 1878, agedeighty-three years. He was a good type of the old school of gentlemen,with a hearty and sincere manner. Carrying the weight of almost anadditional span to the years of man's allotted life, he stood erect as aboy of twenty, and retained to a remarkable degree the manly strength andvigor of early life, worthy his Revolutinary ancestry. Gen. Green was agrandnephew of Col. Samuel Miles, commander of one of the riflebattalions in the Revolutionary war, who was captured at Long Island1776, and was subsequently judge of Court of Errors and Appeals, andmayor of Philadelphia. The general was born at his grandfather'siron-works, near Milesburg, April 13, 1797, and was, therefore, in theeighty-second year of his age. He studied law with Hon. John Blanchard,and was admitted to the bar cotemporary with the late Hon. A .S. Wilson,John G. Miles, Esq., and others. Shortly after he was appointed deputyattorney-general for Clearfield County, whence he removed to Meadvilleand remained five years. In 1834 he abandoned the practice of law andbecame the manager of the Centre Iron-Works, whence he removed to BarreForge, in Huntingdon County, carrying on theiron-works there until 1875,when he sold out and returned to his native county, and died at his placeon Buffalo Run. He was present in the court-room when Munks was tried,and one of the guards at the gallows. His children are G. Dorsey, HannahE., and Joseph A. Green.1

He became a Clerk for HamiltonHumes at Bellefonte, going there to take charge of Centre Furnace asmanager. He was the manager of the Milesburg Iron Works for Irvin, Green& Co. In 1830 in connection with his father-in-law, Joseph Miles, heopened a store in Milesburg. On the death of the latter, in 1840, MrGreen carried on the business alone until 1852, the took as a partner ason, Joseph M. He served several times as burgess of Milesburg.Politicaly he was first a Whig, then a Repubican. He was identified withthe Baptist Church. His death occured in May, 1879. His wife is alsodeceased. Thier children are: Joseph M, our subject; Edward A., who isliving on the old............ ...............; Potts Green, a druggistof Bellefonte. Biographical and Genealogies of Centre County, PA Green, Joseph, Jr., born in Milesburg in 1800, clerked first for HamiltonHumes, at Bellefonte, whence he went to take charge of Centre Furnace asmanager. Green, one of the oldest citizens of Milesburg, CentreCo., where he has passed an active, busy life of nearly three-score andten years, is a descendant, on both sides of prominent families in thehistory of the State. Born December 1, 1829 at Milesburg, Squire Green is the son ofJoseph Green and Catherine (Miles), both natives of Milesburg, and thegrandson of Joseph Green Sr, and of Joseph Miles, and the great-grandsonof General Samuel Miles, of the War of the Revolution, mention of all ofwhom appears in the sketch of G. Dorsey Green, to be found elsewhere. Joseph Green Jr. was born in 1800. He became a Clerk for HamiltonHumes at Bellefonte, going there to take charge of Centre Furnace asmanager. He was the manager of the Milesburg Iron Works for Irvin, Green& Co. In 1830 in connection with his father-in-law, Joseph Miles, heopened a store in Milesburg. On the death of the latter, in 1840, MrGreen carried on the business alone until 1852, the took as a partner ason, Joseph M. He served several times as burgess of Milesburg.Politicaly he was first a Whig, then a Repubican. He was identified withthe Baptist Church. His death occured in May, 1879. His wife is alsodeceased. Thier children are: Joseph M, our subject; Edward A., who isliving on the old............ ...............; Potts Green, a druggistof Bellefonte. Joseph M. Green at the age of seventeen years began and subsequentlyserved an apprenticship at the machinist trade. Latter he was engaged inlumbering and merchandising, in partnership with the W.M. Mc Meen & Co.The firm latter became Joseph M. Green & Son, and was so continued untilin 1861. On the breaking out of the Civil War, Mr. Green enlisted inCompany 'A', 49th P.V.I., and was with the Army of The Potomac. While onthe Pennsula campaign, he was taken sick at Yorktown, VA and owing to thenature of the disease he was compelled to retire from the service, andwas honorably discharged. He returned to Milesburg, where he was disabled for a number of years asa result of his military service. Latter he took charge of the gristmillat that point, and has at periods for that time to this, operated thesame. For many yars he has served the people of Milesburg in variouscapacities, and had a clear and good record, as one will readily judgewhen he learns that it has been 'Squire' Green now for thirty years, andhis serivce as a Justice of the Peace is nearing the third of a centurymilestone. He has filled all the borough offices - Members of theCouncil, of which he has been president, Burgess, etc.. He is aThirty-second Degree Mason, being a member of Lodge at Bellefonte.Politically he is a Republican.1

It was believed,however, that an independent organization should be had in Bellefonte.Accordingly, services looking toward that end were held in the courthouse April 18, 1875, by Rev. W.A. Biggart. By mutual consent aconference was held in the place on the 13th of May 1876 -- moderator,Rev. W.A. Ridge -- at which time Christian experience was related by theseveral persons whose names appear below as constituents of the church:**F. Potts Green**, Harvey Adams, Mercella C. Adams, Mary R. Adams, NettieKirk, Elizabeth North, Eliza Wells, Amelia Wells, Mrs. Kealsh, FatherKeachler, W.A. Biggart and Margaret S. Biggart. Rev. W.A. Biggart waselected pastor and still continues his labors with the church. A councilof recognition convened with the church August 16 of the same year, whichorganized by electing moderator, Rev. Thomas Swinden of Logan's valley;committee to examine doctrines of the church and report in hearing of theconvention, Rev. H.F. King, A.M. Lloyd, H.L. Bunker of Hollidaysburg,Rev. W.A. Ridge of Eagleville, W.A. Biggart, ** F. Potts Green ofBellefonte**. Committee after having carefully examined the articles offaith held by the church and finding them scriptural and in harmony withthe great body of the Baptist church, reported, recommending theirrecognition and reception into the body, when hand of fellowship wasextended the pastor by H L. Bunker and recognition sermon preached byRev. H.F. King. The old M.E. Church was rented as a temporary place ofmeeting. During the one and a half years of their existence the churchhas grown from twelve to seventy members.--Rev. W. A. Biggart.1
