Sir Robert Darcy Knt., of Maldon, Danbury and CanewdonEssex1,2,3
M, #69367, b. circa 1420, d. 2 November 1469
Father | Sir Robert Darcy Knt., of Malden, Essex; van de Pas shows a Sir Robert Darcy of Maldon (m. Alice FitzLangley), with a son named Sir Robert Darcy (no wife mentioned). He also shows a Sir Robert Darcy (m. Elizabeth Tyrrell), with no father shown. Richardshon says that Sir Robert Darcy (m. Elizabeth Tyrrell) was the son of "Robert Darcy Knt., of Maldon, Essex ...by his 2nd wife Alice, daughter and heiress of Henry Filongley, of Old Filongley, Warwickshire,"". The dates are close, so I have given the Sir Robert (m. Alice FitzLangley) a 2nd wife and then linked him as the father of Sir Robert (m. Eliz. Tyrrell). THIS IS PURE SPECULATION ON MY PART. - G. Sir Anthony St. Leger Knt., KG of Ulcombe, Kent was born circa 1496.1,2 He married Agnes Warham of Croydon, daughter of Hugh Warham Esq., of Croydon, Surrey and Marian Colle/Cool, before 1525.3,1,2
Sir Anthony St. Leger Knt., KG of Ulcombe, Kent died on 16 March 1559 at Ulcombe, co. Kent, England; PCC 25 Chaynay.1,2
; per van de Pas: [quote] Son of Ralph St. Leger, of Ulcomb, and Elizabeth Hawte, Anthony St. Leger was born in 1496.
'When twelve years of age he was sent for his grammar learning with his tutor to France, for his carriage to Italy, for his philosophy to Cambridge, for his law to Grayes-Inne; and for that which completed all the government of himself, to court; where his debonnairness and freedome took with the King, and his solidity and wisdom with the Cardinal.'
At eighteen he joined the retinue of George Neville, Lord Abergavenny, an association which grew later on into a family tie. Sir Anthony St.Leger's son, Sir Warham, married Ursula Neville, one of Lord Abergavenny's daughters. Before he was forty Sir Anthony had risen to some prominence at court. However, in 1536, his close friend, Sir Thomas Wyatt, then Sheriff of Kent, nominated him as a member of the Grand Jury of Kent which found a 'true bill' against Anne Boleyn. His friendship with Sir Thomas Wyatt remained intact and, when Wyatt died in 1542, Sir Anthony wrote the 'Epitaph upon Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elder'.
On 31 July 1537 King Henry VIII appointed him as head of a commission of three officers for 'the ordre (sic) and establishment to be taken and made touching the whole state of our lande of Ireland, and all and every of our affaires with the same, both for the reduccion of the said lande to a due civilitie and obedyens, and the advancement of the public weal of the same'. The commissioners arrived in Dublin in early September and on the 26th set out to inspect the regions adjacent to the Pale.
In their investigations, Sir Anthony must have been disheartened on hearing that his own distant Irish cousins were not beyond committing crimes. After his tour of inspection, he remarked that in his opinion it would be difficult for England to hold Ireland. The commissioners' speedy and discreet accomplishment of their task elicited much admiration. In March 1538 Sir Anthony returned to England.
In June 1538 he was appointed one of the gentlemen of Henry VIII's Privy Chamber and in October that year left for Brussels to procure from Queen Maria of Hungary, regent in The Netherlands, a promise of safe passage through Flanders for Anne of Cleves whom he escorted from Düsseldorf back to England to meet her husband-to-be.
His service during the dissolution of the monasteries earned him a post in April 1540 as a commissioner for the establishment of the Church of Canterbury. His efforts were richly rewarded by grants of extensive lands and property, including many manors and rectories previously held by St.Augustine's Abbey, which had suffered the same fate as all the other abbeys and priories of England.
In July 1540 Sir Anthony was constituted Lord Deputy of Ireland and his appointment put Ireland firmly on the threshold of a new epoch. Henry VIII wanted to win recognition for his spiritual and temporal sovereignty, as Anthony had advised him to take this step 'for the Irish have the foolish opinion that the Bishop of Rome is the King of Ireland'. According to Richard Stanihurst, in his 'Chronicle of Ireland', Sir Anthony was 'a wise and warie gentleman, a valiant serviter in war, and a good justicer in peace, properlie learned, a good maker in the English, having gravitie so interlaced with pleasantnesse, as with an exceeding good grace he would attain the one without pouting dumpishnesse and exercise the other without loathsome lightnesse'.
In August 1540 most of Ireland was peaceful but the Kavanaghs were causing a disturbance just south of the Pale. He invaded their country and, taken by surprise, the Kavanaghs submitted. Four months of bitter fighting and hard bargaining with other clans ensued. Sir Anthony spent that Christmas at Carlow Castle mediating between the tribal chiefs of the Kavanaghs and the O'Mores in an attempt to settle their own tribal quarrels and personal differences of opinion. In Lloyd's words, 'Caesar came, saw and overcame. Sir Anthony came, saw and settled.'
On 13 June 1541 in Dublin, the Irish Parliament passed an Act making Henry VIII King of Ireland. Three great chieftains still held out against Anthony: O'Donnell, O'Brien and O'Neill. However, by August O'Donnell had given in; O'Neill at first fought to defend his territories but was forced to surrender. O'Neill subsequently received the title of Earl of Tyrone and, in turn, O'Brien became Earl of Thomond.
Sir Anthony reached the peak of his career in 1543 when he received the honour of the Garter for his services in Ireland. However, a serious rift developed between him and James, 9th Earl of Butler; their quarrel became so acute that both men were finally summoned to England by the King. First they were reconciled and then it was discovered that the quarrel had been engineered by a mutual enemy, John Alen, the Lord Chancellor, who had exploited their disagreement, hoping to remove both his enemies. Alen was deprived of his office and clapped into the grim Fleet Prison. Ormonde died soon afterwards in mysterious circumstances, poisoned by a meal served in his London home by his own servants.
During the reign of Edward VI he remained as Viceroy in Ireland where he was forced to subdue O'Connor and O'More. In 1548 Sir Anthony was replaced by Sir Edward Bellingham, which seems to have been a mistake as twenty-two months later Sir Anthony was re-appointed. In February 1551 the Catholic Sir Anthony was instructed to introduce the English liturgy into Ireland.
In 1552 the King gave him Leeds Castle in Kent and his new base may have impressed him, but it never replaced Ulcombe Manor as his favourite home. However, when Mary Tudor became Queen his enemies again tried to destroy him. Sir William FitzWilliam charged him with falsifying accounts and the Privy Council met to discuss the new accusations. Sir Anthony, laid up at Ulcombe with sciatica, could not attend the meeting, so a letter was addressed to him but his death, on 16 March 1559, prevented him from answering.
He was so highly regarded when he died that a public funeral was arranged for him, a glittering and pompous occasion. He was buried with a standard, a great banner of arms, helmet, crest, target and swords, and six dozen escutcheons, in the presence of two heralds, Garter King of Arms and Lancaster Herald.
