Dear Leo,

I meant that she descends from the Coggeshall/Hawkwood marriage, as the
St Georges also do. The line would begin:

Sir William Coggeshall 1358-1426=(1)Antiocha Hawkwood
Blanche d.1460=John Doreward of Bocking d.1462
William Doreward of Bocking d.1481=Margaret Arsic
Elizabeth Doreward=Thomas Fotheringham of Brockley d.1490-1
Margaret 1475-1513/14=Nicholas Beaupre d.1513
Edmund Beaupre of Outwell d.1568=Catherine Bedingfield her (2)
Dorothy Beaupre d.1602/3=Sir Robert Bell d.1577, Speaker, his (3)
Frances Bell fl.1656=Sir Anthony Dering c.1558-1635/6 his (2)
Sir Edward Dering 1st Bt 1598-1644=(2)Anne Ashburnham c.1605-1628
Sir Edward Dering 2nd Bt 1625-1684=Mary Harvey 1629-1704
Elizabeth Dering d.1681=Sir Robert Southwell, a quo Camilla

>>>>> > There also seem to be descents from Blanche Doreward- however, I only have that from the 'Wallop Family' books and have never checked further. If correct, then Camilla Cornwall would be a descendant (as all her in-laws stem from the St George line, she might as well get a mention!).1

Recently I have been looking at the ancestry of Roger Corbet of Albright Hussey in Shropshire (1673-1715). It appears there are 11 descents from Edward III to Roger, primarily through his father Captain Robert Corbet (1629-1698).

In this series of posts I propose to detail what I know about the lines from Roger to Edward III in the hope of generating a discussion about the likelihood of all these lines holding and where better (or contradictory) sources may be found.

I have tried to source every fact, where no source is cited it probably means I got from an SGM post without noting the source or perhaps straight off the internet with varying degrees of certainty. As far as I know all the relationships are sourced and it is only dates and places which could be better documented. I would welcome any sources where I have gaps.

The following bibliography will apply to all the subsequent five posts.

Juhael/Judicael (?) 1st Count of Porhoët1,2

M, #67645
FatherConan I "Le Tort" (?) Duc de Bretagne, Cte de Rennes b. c 927, d. 27 Jun 992; per the Henry Project: "Supposed children (probably falsely attributed): Juthaël, count of Porhoët (existence uncertain). The Breton genealogist Augustin du Paz is the evident source (followed by numerous secondary sources) for the statement that Conan had a son Juthaël, count of Porhoët, the claimed father of viscount Guethenoc, who witnessed a charter of duke Geoffroy I (d. 1008) [Cart. Redon, 247]. In a discussion of the origin of the counts of Porhoët [Morice (1750): 1: 975-9 (Note XLV)], Morice cites "Hist. Mss. des Comtes de Porhoet" by du Paz as the source. However, there does not appear to be any confirmation of even the existence of Juthaël, count of Porhoët, and the well documented genealogy of the viscounts and counts of Porhoët begins with Guethenoc."1,3,2,4,5

Alain (?)1

M, #67647, d. 27 June 992
FatherConan I "Le Tort" (?) Duc de Bretagne, Cte de Rennes b. c 927, d. 27 Jun 992; per the Henry Project: "Supposed children (existence uncertain): [Lobineau (1707), 1 (genealogical tables at beginning); Morice (1750), 1: xvij, 45; Villeneuve (1875), 145]
In an apparently legendary passage in Gest Cons Andegav, a battle at Angers is (against count Foulques Nerra of Anjou, therefore 987×992 if the account is accurate) described in which two sons were captured (including Alain, the eldest), two other sons were killed, and Conan lost his arm [Gesta Cons. Andegav., 255]. This source cites Rodulfus Glaber, and evidently used Rodulfus for the injury [Rodulfus Glaber ii, 3 (p.32)], it is difficult to accept this source on genealogical details of the Breton rulers when it does not even give the correct parentage of Foulques Nerra, falsely making him a son of Maurice, in fact his younger half-brother [Gesta Cons. Andegav., 254].

MALE Alain (eldest), captured at Angers.

MALE 3 sons (names not given), one captured at Angers, two killed there.
[The unnamed son supposedly captured at Angers is not generally listed by the secondary sources listed above, evidently because they regard him to be the same of Geoffroy I.]"1,2

; Per Med Lands:
"GEOFFROY [Gauzfrid] (-[878]). The Annales Bertiniani record that "Guntfridus et Gozfridus" defected to "Salomonem, Britonum ducem" in 861, and persuaded Louis ("le Bègue"), son of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks, to join them in 862, although they also record that King Charles II pardoned "Gozfridum et Roricum atque Heriveum" in 863[45]. The Annales Bertiniani record that "Hugo abba et Gauzfridus cum Transsequanis" fought "Nortmannis in Ligeri" in 869, and that "Hugo abba monasterii sancti Martini et Gozfridus cum ceteris Trans-Sequanis" attacked “Nortmanni” at their stronghold in “insulam Ligeris” in 871 but were defeated[46]. No record has yet been identified which links Geoffroy with the administration of the county of Maine or accords him the title count. The Annales Bertiniani record that in 878 "filii Gozfridi" attacked "castellum et honores filii Odonis" which King Louis “le Bègue” granted to "isdem Gozfridus...[et] filios suos" who abandoned “partem Brittonibus” and swore allegiance to the king[47]. Flodoard's Historia Remensis Ecclesiæ names "Gozlino…Bernardo nepote ipsius…fratrem…suum Gozfridem", referring to Bernard Marquis of Septimania and his rebellion dated to [877], from the context implying that Gauzfrid had recently died[48].
"m ---. The name of Geoffroy’s wife is not known.

No further information has been found concerning these sons.
