David Lewis1
M, #72183, b. 5 May 1695, d. 21 October 1778
Father | John Lewis2 |
Last Edited | 22 Sep 2019 |
David Lewis was born before 5 May 1695 at St. Peter's Parish, Hanover Co., Virginia, USA; Davis [1989:270] says b. in Hanover Co. Find A Grave says b. in New Kent Co. There may have been a county border change between 1695 and today.2,3 He was baptized on 5 May 1695 at St. Peter's Parish, Hanover Co., Virginia, USA.2 He married Anne Elizabeth “Betty” Terrell, daughter of William Terrell Sr. and Susannah Waters, in 1717 at New Kent Co., Virginia, USA,
; His 1st wife.4,1,5,6,7,3 David Lewis married Unknown (?) after 1734
;
His 2nd wife. His 1st wife died in 1734.2 David Lewis married Mary McGrath in 1759
;
His 3rd wife; her 2nd husband.2,3,8
David Lewis died on 21 October 1778 at Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA, at age 83.1
David Lewis was buried after 21 October 1778 at Burial location unknown ; From Find A Grave website:
BIRTH 5 May 1695, New Kent County, Virginia, USA
DEATH Aug 1779 (aged 84), Charlottesville, Charlottesville City, Virginia, USA
David Lewis and his siblings have two dates that have been called both birth and christening dates and church memberships dates, yet they are all guessed at. Multiple records of inhabitants and church memberships in parish registers to me, show moving people. Moving from the coast on arrival to farther inland.
His date is said the 5th of May and either 1685 or 1695. The first is Christ Church Parish. But with so many people having a record there and then later another place farther inland, I have come to think of Christ Church Parish as the Ellis Island of Colonial Virginia.
David also has his christening/birth/membership with all his siblings and naming their father John Lewis as 5th of May 1695 to John Lewis in St Peter's Parish, New Kent (Later Hanover), Virginia.
Descendants of David Lewis' have tested their y-DNA for genealogy and David's father John Lewis' of New Kent his identity and origins are, as yet, unknown. Descendants of John Lewis of Warner Hall have also tested their y-DNA for genealogy. Comparing the DNA of descendants of both John Lewis of Warner Hall and David Lewis of Hanover and Charlotsville, the results are conclusive, David Lewis is NOT related to The Lewises of Warner Hall.
Without a doubt one would believe that our David Lewis his father John are Welsh.
David married first Ann Betty Terrell in possibly New Kent (later Hanover) in about 1717 and they had eight children. Betty died before 1834 in probably Hanover, Virginia.
David's will was written 21 Oct 1778 and was proved in Albemarle Court 1779. Albemarle Co., VA, Will Bk 2:381-2. It is not known if David was buried on his original home place which possibly what is now Birdwood Golf Course, part of the University of Virginia, or if the Jesse Pittman Lewis Cemetery was already in use. Both son Jesse's home and son John's home nearer Charlottesville center had been built before David died. But David was not feeble when he passed, the family story says that David was about to marry for the 4th time when he died, so it might be thought he is buried on his home place by the spring, near the Birdwood golf course club house just beyond the putting green.
will be adding all found stray notes: I am without most of the hard copy I ever had and am old now, but Sarah's parents Robert and Ann were killed and Sarah was reared by her aunt and uncle. Later Sarah's sister was named in documents , this was Margaret Peggy Taliaferro Gaines the wife of Hiram Gaines. Certainly Sarah was in the will of her aunt and uncle and some of the property was actually property from Robert that had been held for her I believe - but removed her birth date - We also have the y-dna from two male sons descendants of David Lewis sons and they are not related to the males of Warner Hall Lewises, they are a totally different family. I have been to the location of what is believed Page's Warehouse out from the Pamunkey River and the spot where i took the David lewis findagrave photo is believed to be the level where David would have had his house. It is near the club house of the Birdwood Golf and behind that back house is an old stream spring that they believe goes back to David and this would have been his house location - from there to Faulkner house to John Lewis house that was bought by Chamberlain form an outline of the original property - the 1st patent west of the Rivanna River

Anne Elizabeth “Betty” Terrell was born in 1692 at New Kent Co., Virginia, USA; Genealogics says b. 1692. Find A Grave says b. 1695.1,3 She married David Lewis, son of John Lewis, in 1717 at New Kent Co., Virginia, USA,

Anne Elizabeth “Betty” Terrell was buried in 1734 at Burial location unknown ; From Find A Grave website:
BIRTH 1695, New Kent County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 1734 (aged 38–39), Hanover County, Virginia, USA
Betty was the daughter of William Terrell and his wife Susannah Waters Terrell, her christening is not found but she is thought to have married at full age. She married David Lewis in New Kent County in 1717 and they had eight children. David received the 1st patent west of the Rivanna River in 1734 but there would not have been a home for a time. Betty could have died in Albemarle but I might believe that she died in Hanover Town, Virginia.
A record says she was "born" in the Freshes of the Pamunkey. The freshees are just north of the York River, just beyond where the Pamunkey and the Matiponni rivers split off from the York.
I wish the U of V archaeologists and geologists would do all our family's places and grave yards.

Barnhill [1934:1-5] outlines the descendants of a Richmond and Catherine (CRUMP) TERRELL (pages attached). Barnhill disagrees with Leo van de Pas and Reitwiesner regarding the name of Richmond's father. Van de Pas and Reitwiesner say his father was "William"; Barnshill calls him "Richmond." Both give RIchmond's mother as "Susan WATERS". Barnhill [1934:27-39] offers a descent for a William and Susan (WATERS) TERRELL which is different for the one she offers for Richmond and Susan (WATERS) TERRELL and, except for the son Richmond, matches Reitwiesner's work. Susannah Waters was born circa 1659 at New Kent Co., Virginia, USA.3 She married William Terrell Sr., son of Richmond I Terrell Sr. and Elizabeth Waters, in 1677.1,4,3,5,6
Susannah Waters was buried in 1725 at Burial location unknown ;
From Find A Grave:
BIRTH 1659, New Kent County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 1725 (aged 65–66), Hanover County, Virginia, USA
Susannah's birth year is approximate. It is based on the approximate birth years of her oldest children. In modern sources (such as the New England Historic Genealogy Society) her maiden name is listed as "Waters". This surname is used for several of the Terrell wives and it is not supported by historical records for Susannah.
Regarding the 2nd (duplicate) entry for child Anne Elizabeth "Betty" Terrell Lewis, it was removed by findagrave.com however, they did not sever the link to her parents so she still shows up here. You can find the "Memorial Not Found" error message at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=95763164. It has been reported to findagrave.com.
The proper and correct Findagrave Memorial for Anne Elizabeth "Betty" Terrell Lewis can be found here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=74302990 created and owned by Cousin Cherie Lynn (#46822884); the following is an excerpt from her memorial's bio:
"Betty was the daughter of William Terrell and his wife Susannah Waters Terrell, her christening is not found but she is thought to have married at full age. She married David Lewis in New Kent County in 1717 and they had eight children. David received the 1st patent west of the Rivanna River in 1734 but there would not have been a home for a time. Betty could have died in Albemarle but I might believe that she died in Hanover Town, Virginia."
"A record says she was "born" in the Freshes of the Pamunkey. The freshees are just north of the York River, just beyond where the Pamunkey and the Matiponni rivers split off from the York."
"I wish the U of V archaeologists and geologists would do all our family's places and grave yards."

Reitwiesner's work is the most recent and I feel it may be more accurate.
