PIONEER EDDY RANCHER PASSES
     Pioneer Eddy County rancher Tom Middleton died this morning at Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was 69.
     Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the West Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Emmanuel, pastor of the First Methodist Church, presiding. The Rev. C. E. Jamison of Hobbs will assist.
     Middleton is survived by his wife, the former Pearl Cochran; two sons, Randolph and Howard; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Reed; four grandchildren, all of Carlsbad, four sisters, Mrs. H. H. Ezell of Houston, Mrs. Dave Collaum of Tucumcari, Mrs. E. S. Shattuck, of Carlsbad, and Mrs. William H. Morgan, of Carlsbad; and four brothers, Ross Middleton, Sonoita, Ariz., Gus Middleton of La Habra, Calif., D. J. R. Middleton of Bowie, Texas, and Lee Middleton of Los Angeles.
     Born March 16, 1881, in Cherokee County, Texas, Middleton first came to Eddy County in 1898. He married Mrs. Middleton on Jan. 15, 1913.
     For many a rancher in the Guadalupe Mountain area west of Carlsbad, Middleton was the last man to have a store and post office at the old town of Queen, in the mountain area. He became semi-retired in 1947.
     Long a member of the Methodist Church, his home in Carlsbad was at 412 North Halagueno. Middleton's nephews will serve as pall bearers.

Services for Pearl Cochran Middleton, 94, 1900 Westridge St., are pending with West Funeral Home. She died Dec. 22, 1987.

She was born Aug. 21, 1893, at Seven Rivers and spent her entire life in this area. She married the late Tom Middleton Jan. 15, 1913. They ranched in the Queen area until 1947. She was the postmistress at Queen where she and her husband operated the Queen General Store and Post Office from 1916 until 1921. In 1947 she moved to Carlsbad where she made her home. She had been a resident of Landsun Manor for several years.

She was a life member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, W.R. "Randy" Middleton and Howard Middleton, both of Carlsbad; one daughter, Violet Reed, Las Vegas, Nev; three sisters, Elizabeth Steele and Nina Hilliker, both of Los Angeles, Calif., and Vee Dixon, Tujunga, Calif; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services for Pearl C. Middleton, 94, 1900 Westridge St., are scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. in the West Funeral Home chapel. The rev. D. Richard Whitwam, First United Methodist Church, is to officate. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.

Pallbearers include: Collin Gerrells, Ben McCollaum, Oren Means, Vernon Lanham, Noel Kincaid and George Carriker.

Visitation at the funeral home on Christmas Day will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

     CARLSBAD--A memorial service for Violet Middleton Reed, 88, of Carlsbad, will be 3 p.m. today at Landsun Manor Chapel with the Rev. Erwin Van Essen, officiating.
     Mrs. Reed was born at Queen on Feb. 8, 1914, and passed away Aug. 9, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Reed, of Landsun Home; her daughters, Krista Edmonds, of Albuquerque, and Mary Ellen McMillin, of Annapolis, M.D; and three grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and numerous other family members, including her sister-in-law, Kay Middleton, of Carlsbad.
     Violet was the daughter of Thomas C. Middleton and Pearl Cochran Middleton of the X=(X 2 Bar) Ranch at Queen. She attended school in the Guadalupe Mountains and graduated from Carlsbad High School. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Randolph and Howard.
     Violet worked in public health for seven years in the Eddy County Courthouse, while being very active in the youth programs at First Methodist Church.
     She married Kenneth Reed on April 10, 1938. The family traveled around the coutry extensively during the 1950s and '60s, and she and Ken lived in Las Vegas, Nev., for 28 years while they worked for the Department of Energy at the Nevada Test Site. She retired in 1984.
     In 1990, Violet and Ken returned to Carlsbad and spent the next few years enjoying their freedom and retirement. They belonged to Good Sams RV group and enjoyed traveling and socializing with the group.

     Ida May Remington and Emma D. McPherson were the two children of Aurilia M. DeGolier and Samuel D. Wallace. Aurilia was not a deceased sister of William but instead his niece. She died in 1864. According to the 1880 census, her two children were married sisters living in Le Roy, Genesee, New York. Emma D.McPherson was married to John B. McPherson and had a young infant boy. Her sister Ida May Remington was a young widow. Both stated that they had been born in Michigan, Ida in 1858 and Emma in 1861, and their parents had been born in New York. (The family had located earlier to York, Washenaw Co., Michigan, but had moved back to New York after Aurilia had died.)
     All sisters and information about William Shattuck, Jr. was taken from 'Memorials of the Descendants of William Shattuck.' Subsequent research revealed only three sisters who passed before 1888. A fourth sister had died as an infant and that has been documented by a cemetery burial. The information given in the probate was incorrect and William only had three deceased adult sisters. Again,the fourth 'sister' was his niece.
     Interestingly, sister Phylinda Strong, nee Shattuck, was still alive and was not included as an heir.

     Ida May Remington and Emma D. McPherson were the two children of Aurilia M. DeGolier and Samuel D. Wallace. Aurilia was not a deceased sister of William but instead his niece. She died in 1864. According to the 1880 census, her two children were married sisters living in Le Roy, Genesee, New York. Emma D.McPherson was married to John B. McPherson and had a young infant boy. Her sister Ida May Remington was a young widow. Both stated that they had been born in Michigan, Ida in 1858 and Emma in 1861, and their parents had been born in New York. (The family had located earlier to York, Washenaw Co., Michigan, but had moved back to New York after Aurilia had died.)
     All sisters and information about William Shattuck, Jr. was taken from 'Memorials of the Descendants of William Shattuck.' Subsequent research revealed only three sisters who passed before 1888. A fourth sister had died as an infant and that has been documented by a cemetery burial. The information given in the probate was incorrect and William only had three deceased adult sisters. Again,the fourth 'sister' was his niece.
     Interestingly, sister Phylinda Strong, nee Shattuck, was still alive and was not included as an heir.

     Ida May Remington and Emma D. McPherson were the two children of Aurilia M. DeGolier and Samuel D. Wallace. Aurilia was not a deceased sister of William but instead his niece. She died in 1864. According to the 1880 census, her two children were married sisters living in Le Roy, Genesee, New York. Emma D.McPherson was married to John B. McPherson and had a young infant boy. Her sister Ida May Remington was a young widow. Both stated that they had been born in Michigan, Ida in 1858 and Emma in 1861, and their parents had been born in New York. (The family had located earlier to York, Washenaw Co., Michigan, but had moved back to New York after Aurilia had died.)
     All sisters and information about William Shattuck, Jr. was taken from 'Memorials of the Descendants of William Shattuck.' Subsequent research revealed only three sisters who passed before 1888. A fourth sister had died as an infant and that has been documented by a cemetery burial. The information given in the probate was incorrect and William only had three deceased adult sisters. Again,the fourth 'sister' was his niece.
     Interestingly, sister Phylinda Strong, nee Shattuck, was still alive and was not included as an heir.
     The location of Blood's Station, Steuben Co., New York, was a hamlet named after Calvin Blood, and the name was eventually changed to Atlanta, Steuben Co., New York. It is located one mile from North Cohocton.
