"EDWARD, son of HENRY III King of England & his wife Eléonore de Provence (Palace of Westminster 17 Jun 1239-Burgh-on-Sands, Cumberland 8 Jul 1307, bur Westminster Abbey). The Annals of Tewkesbury record the birth “XIV Kal Jul…Londoniæ apud Westmonasterium” of “filius…Eadwardus” to “regi Henrico Angliæ filio regis Johannis…de regina sua Alienora filia comitis de Provencia”[727]. The Continuator of Florence of Worcester records the birth "XIV Kal Jul" [1239] of "Edwardum filium suum primogenitum" to "Alienor regina Angliæ"[728]. Matthew Paris records that Edward was installed as Duke of Gascony in 1252, after the territory was subdued by Simon de Montfort[729]. Henry III King of England granted “totam terram Vasconie” to “Eudoardo primogenito filio nostro” by charter dated 8 Jun 1252[730]. He was created Earl of Chester 14 Feb 1254. Taken prisoner with his father at the battle of Lewes 14 May 1264 by the rebel barons under Simon de Montfort, he managed to escape 26 May. As a means of making peace, he delivered the earldom of Chester to Simon de Montfort 24 Dec 1264, though it was restored to Edward after the battle of Evesham 4 Aug 1265. He left England in summer 1270 intending to join Louis IX King of France in Tunisia. On learning of the king's death after arriving in Africa, Edward wintered in Sicily with King Charles and the following spring sailed for Palestine, landing at Acre 9 May 1271, but he had insufficient resources to make any headway against the Mameluk Sultan Baibars and signed a peace agreement with the Sultan at Caesarea 22 May 1272[731]. An attempt was made on his life 16 Jun 1272 when an Assassin stabbed him with a poisoned dagger, the after effects of which left Edward seriously ill for several months, and left Acre for England 22 Sep 1272[732]. He succeeded his father in 1272 as EDWARD I “Longshanks” King of England, when he was in Sicily returning from the Crusade. He arrived back in England in Aug 1274, and was crowned 19 Aug 1274 at Westminster Abbey. A strong king, he increased the power of the crown during his reign at the expense of the barons, probably setting the scene for the problems faced by his weaker son Edward II.
"Betrothed (1247) to [MARIE] de Brabant, daughter of HENRI II Duke of Brabant & his first wife Maria von Staufen (-beheaded Donauwörth 1256, bur Donauwörth Heiliges Kreuz Stift). The betrothal of one of the daughters of Duke Henri II to Edward of England is recorded by Matthew Paris[733]. It is not certain that Marie was the daughter in question. However, she is the most likely candidate as her two older sisters were already married and her younger half-sister was only an infant at the time.
"m firstly (Betrothed 1253, Burgos 18 Oct 1254) Infanta doña LEONOR de Castilla, daughter of FERNANDO III “el Santo” King of Castile & his second wife Jeanne de Dammartin-Ponthieu (1240-Harby, Nottinghamshire 29 Nov 1290, bur Westminster Abbey). The Annales Londonienses record the marriage "circa translationem beati Edwardi regis apud Boures" in 1254 of "Edwardus filius regis Henrici" and "Alienoram iuvenculam…sororem regis Hispanniæ"[734]. This marriage was first proposed in 1253 in connection with settlement of the Spanish claim to Gascony, according to Matthew Paris who refers to her as "sororem suam uterinani" in reference to "rex Hispaniæ" but does not give her name[735]. She accompanied her husband on crusade 1270/72. Crowned Queen 19 Aug 1274 at Westminster Abbey. She succeeded her mother in 1279 as Ctss de Ponthieu et de Montreuil. The Continuator of Florence of Worcester records the death "IV Kal Dec apud Herdeby in comitatu Lincolniensi" of "Alienora regina Angliæ domini regis consors"[736].
"m secondly ([Betrothed 12 May 1299] contract Montreuil 19 Jun 1299, Canterbury Cathedral 8 or 9 Sep 1299) MARGUERITE de France, daughter of PHILIPPE III King of France & his second wife Marie de Brabant ([1277/83]-Marlborough Castle, Wiltshire 14 Feb 1318, bur Greyfriars Church, Newgate, London). The Chronicle of Guillaume de Nangis names "Ludovicum comitem Ebroiciæ civitatis, Margaretamque reginam Angliæ ac Blancham ducissam Austriæ" as the three children of King Philippe III and his second wife, recording in a later passage the marriage of Marguerite "apud Cantuariam" in 1299[737]. Edward I King of England appointed “Amadeum comitem Sabaudiæ consanguineum nostrum” as proxy for the marriages between “nos et Margaretam sororem...regis Franciæ...ac inter Edwardum filium nostrum et Isabellam...regis Franciæ filiam” by charter dated 12 May 1299[738]. The Annals of Worcester record the marriage “Sep…IV Id…in ecclesia Cantuarensi” in 1299 of “Edwardus rex” and “Margareta soror Philippi Regis Franciæ”[739]. A charter dated 27 Sep 1299 lists the dower assigned by King Edward to “Margaretam sororem...regis Franciæ” in England[740]. The Chronique Parisienne Anonyme de 1316 à 1339 records the death [in 1318] of “Marguerite roynne d’Engleterre, fille du roy Philippe...fame segonde au grant Edouart jadiz roy de Engleterre...”[741]. King Edward II issued a charter dated 18 Apr 1318 to “Thomæ comiti Norffolciæ et marescallo Angliæ et Edmundo de Wodestok fratribus nostris...executoribus testamenti bonæ memoriæ Margaretæ nuper reginæ Angliæ matris nostræ”[742]."

"LUDWIG von Bayern (Heidelberg 13 Apr 1229-Heidelberg 2 Feb 1294, bur Kloster Fürstenfeld). The Altahenses Annales record the birth "1229 Id Apr" of "Agnes ducissa Bawarie filium…Ludwicus"[452]. "Otto…Comes Palatini Reni Dux Bawarie" exchanged property with the abbot of Niederaltaich, naming "Ludovico filio nostro…et Heinrico fratre suo et sororibus suis Elysabet, Sophya et Agnete", by charter dated 17 Oct 1244[453]. He succeeded his father in 1253 as LUDWIG II "der Strenge" joint Duke of Bavaria, jointly with his brother Heinrich I. After joint rule became unworkable, he and his brother agreed a division of the family's territories in 1255, under which Ludwig became Duke of Upper Bavaria (Oberbayern) and Pfalzgraf bei Rhein. "L…comes palatinus Rheni, dux Bawarie" supported the candidature of "Rikardum comitem Cornubie, fratrem regis Anglie" as king of Germany by charter dated 26 Nov 1256[454]. The Notæ Fuerstenfeldenses record that Duke Ludwig founded "abbaciam in Furstenfeld ordinis Cisterciensis" in 1263[455]. Rudolf I King of Germany appointed Duke Ludwig to preside over the implementation of his policy of return to the empire of all properties unlawfully appropriated since the deposition of Emperor Friedrich II in 1245, promulgated at the Diet of Nürnburg 19 Nov 1274[456]. Duke Ludwig objected to his brother's claim to an electoral vote, confirmed in a 29 May 1276 agreement between the two designed to settle some of their differences[457]. The Notæ Altahenses record the death "1294 IV Non Feb" of "Ludwicus dux Bawarie"[458]. The Ratisponensis Annales record the death "1294 apud Haidelberch Kal Feb" of "Ludwicus comes palatinus Reni dux Bawarie"[459].
"m firstly (2 Aug 1254) MARIE de Brabant, daughter of HENRI II Duke of Brabant & his first wife Maria von Staufen (-beheaded Donauwörth 1256, bur Donauwörth Heiliges Kreuz Stift). The Oude Kronik van Brabant names (in order) "Mechtildim comitissam Atrebatensem et Sancti Pauli, Mariam comitissam palatinam Reni, Beatricem lantgraviam Thuringie postea comitissam Flandrie, et Margaretam sanctiomonialem, postea abbatissam in Valle Ducis" as the daughters of "Henricus secundus et quintus dux Brabancie" and his first wife Marie[460]. The Genealogia Ducum Brabantiæ Heredum Franciæ names "Maria" as second of the four daughters of "Henricus…secundus dux" and his wife Maria, and her husband "duci Bavarie", specifying that he "impie et crudeliter" killed her[461]. The Annales Mellicenses in 1256 record that "Lodwicus Reni comes palatinus" had "Mariam uxorem suam, filiam ducis Brabancie" beheaded by her jailers "apud Werdam"[462]. The Continuatio Lambacensis clarifies that she was killed because of her adultery[463]. The Notæ Fuerstenfeldenses record that Duke Ludwig beheaded his wife "Mariam ducissam Brabancie" in "castro Werde Suevico"[464]. The necrology of Freising Weihenstephan records the death "XV Kal Feb" of "Maria palatine Reni decollate a sponse eius Ludovico palatino Reni"[465].
"Betrothed (Bacharach 26 Nov 1256) to --- of Cornwall, daughter of RICHARD Earl of Cornwall & his second wife Sancha de Provence (-after 26 Nov 1256). "L…comes palatinus Rheni, dux Bawarie" confirmed his betrothal "cum filia fratris…regis Anglie", or in case of impossibility "cum filia sororis eiusdem", by charter dated 25 Nov 1256[466]. This betrothal was arranged to confirm Duke Ludwig's agreement to support the candidature of Richard Earl of Cornwall as king of Germany, her dowry being 12,000 marks[467]. Duke Ludwig´s support for Earl Richard is confirmed in a charter dated 26 Nov 1256[468]. It is assumed that this daughter, concerning whom no other record has yet been found, was born from her father´s second marriage, as daughters from his first marriage would probably have been considered to old for betrothal at that date.
"m secondly (24 Aug 1260) ANNA von Glogau, daughter of KONRAD I Duke of Glogau [Piast] & his first wife Salomea of Poland [Piast] ([1250/52]-25 Jun 1271, bur Fürstenfeld). The Altahenses Annales record the marriage in 1260 of "Ludwicus palatinus Rehni dux Bawarie" and "Annam filiam Chunradi ducis Polonie"[469]. The Notæ Diessenses record the death "1271 VI Kal Iul" of "Anna ducissa Bawarie"[470]. The Notæ Fuerstenfeldenses record that the mother of Duke Ludwig died "1271 V Kal Iun" and was buried at Fürstenfeld[471].
"m thirdly (Aachen 24 Oct 1273) MECHTILD von Habsburg, daughter of RUDOLF I King of Germany Graf von Habsburg & his first wife Gertrud [Anna] von Hohenberg [Zollern] (Rheinfelden [1253]- Munich 22 or 23 Dec 1304, bur Fürstenfeld Cistercian Convent). The Notæ Fuerstenfeldenses name "rex Rudolfus filiam suam…Mechthildam" as third wife of Duke Ludwig[472]. This third marriage was arranged to secure Duke Ludwig’s support for her father’s election as King of Germany, with a dowry of 10,000 marks. The Hermanni Altahenses Annales record that "1302…in vigilia Iohannis baptiste Rudolfus" captured "Mechtildem matrem suam, relictam Ludwici ducis…et Conradum de Oteling" at "castro Schilperg" and took them to Munich where Konrad von Oteling was beheaded "in die sancte Margarete…propter quondam infamiam"[473]. The Notæ Fuerstenfeldenses record the death "1304 10 Kal Ian" of "Mechthildis mater Rudolfi et Ludovici" and her burial at Fürstenfeld[474]. The Notæ Diessenses record the death "1305 11 Kal Ian" of "Methildis ducissa Bawaie"[475]. The necrology of Seligenthal records the death "XII Kal Jan" of "domina Mehtildis uxor Ludwici ducis Bawarie"[476]."

"Maria of Brabant (1226–1256) was a daughter of Henry II, Duke of Brabant, and Maria of Swabia. She married Louis II, Duke of Bavaria, being the first of three wives.
Background
"Maria was the fifth of six children born to Henry by his first wife, Maria,[1] a daughter of Philip of Swabia. Maria's siblings included Henry III, Duke of Brabant and Matilda of Brabant.[1] After the death of her mother, her father remarried to Sophie of Thuringia; from this marriage she gained two half-siblings, including Henry I of Hesse.
Betrothals and marriage
"On 2 August 1254, Maria was married to Louis II, Duke of Bavaria.[2] The couple were married for only two years, during which time they had no children.
Execution
"Maria was executed by beheading in Donauwörth in 1256, after being accused of adultery by her husband,[2] following the standard practice for women found guilty of adultery; however, proof of guilt of adultery on her part could never be validated. As expiation, Louis founded the Cistercian friary Fürstenfeld Abbey (Fürstenfeldbruck) near Munich.

"WALRAM (-[13 Jun/24 Dec] 1297). "Richarda comitissa Juliacensis, Walleranus Aquensis, Otto Traiectensis ecclesiarum prepositi et Gerardus fratres, filii eiusdem comitisse" submitted to Sifrid Archsbishop of Köln, with the intercession of "Godefrido comite Seynensi", by charter dated 14 Oct 1279[962]. He succeeded his father as Graf von Jülich. "Gerardus natus quondam…Wilhelmi comitis Juliacensis" bought property at Woring, with the consent of "domine Richarde matris nostre, domini Walrami comitis Juliacensis prepositi Aquensis fratris nostri et Methildis puelle sororis nostre", by charter dated 30 Apr 1287[963]. "Adolphus…Romanorum rex" granted rights to "Walramo comite Juliacensi, consanguineo…suo" by charter dated 13 Jun 1297[964].
"Betrothed (9 Mar 1290) to --- von Westerburg, daughter of HEINRICH Herr von Westerburg & his wife Agnes von Isenburg. A charter dated 9 Mar 1290 confirms the betrothal of "Walramus comes Juliacensis" and "filia…quondam Henrici domini de Westerburg", stating that she was "consanguinea" of Sifrid Archbishop of Köln[965]. No other document has been found which indicates whether the couple were ever married.
"m (Papal dispensation 8 Jan 1296, before 16 Oct 1296) as her first husband, MARIE de Brabant, daughter of GODEFROI de Brabant Heer van Aarschot, Seigneur de Vierzon & his wife Marie de Vierzon (-25 Feb 1332). Pope Boniface VIII issued a dispensation for the marriage of "Walerami comitis Juliacensi" and "Marie nate --- Godefridi de Brabantia domini castri de Arscot" despite 4o consanguinity dated 8 Jan 1296[966]. Her parentage and first marriage are confirmed by a charter dated 2 Jul 1303 under which Marie Queen of France confirmed the division of property between "Marie contesse de Julliers, Ysabiau fame Girart de Julliers, Aeliz fame Jehan de Harcourt et Blanche fame Bertaut de Maalinnes, filles et hoirs nostre…freire monseign. Godefroy de Braban jadis sires d’Arscot" and heirs of "nostre…neveu Jehan de Braban jadis seign. de Vierson", confirming that Marie would receive "la terre de Saint Trut…la terre d’Arscot, de Billar…la terre de Birbois…la terre de Berri, de Orlenois et de Torrraine, le chastel…de Virson"[967]. The date of her first marriage is indicated by the charter dated 16 Oct 1296 which records an alliance agreed between Sifrid Archbishop of Köln and "Godefridus de Brabantia dominus de Arscot et de Virson", through the intervention of "W. comite Juliacensi, genero nostro"[968]. Vrouw van Aarschot, Dame de Vierzon. A note in the Latijnsboek, the oldest register of the Leenhof van Brabant, reads “Maria comitissa Juliacen’ tenet Arscot, Vaelbeke, Rode, cu’ apend’ et illud quod D’us Godefridus de Brabant solebat tene a duce in feodum”[969]. "Gerardus comes et Elisabeth comitissa nec non Wilhelmus eorum primogenitus filius dominus de Broughe" confirmed concessions granted to Averboden by "domina Maria domina de Arschot et de Virsione comitissa Juliancensis nostræ prædicta Elisabeth soror", by charter dated 1320[970]. She married secondly (23 Sep 1323) Robert de Beaumont Seigneur de Povance. Marie’s second marriage is confirmed by an entry in an old zielmisboek from the Abbey van Averbode which records the death “IV Kal Oct” of “nobilis Dominus Robertus de Ballamonte, dominus de Poenci, maritus nobilis Dominæ de Arschot”, adding that his widow donated for his soul[971]. Maria van Brabant, countess of Gulik, vrouw van Aarschot, announced on 22 Mar 1331 that she as true and lawful landowner, in the presence of her leenmannen, Aert heer van Wesemaal and marshal of Brabant, her nephew Hendrik heer van Bierbeek, Karlus van Aarschot heer van Rivieren, Jan van Aaarschot heer van Schoonhoven, knights, Goort van Stade, Gossen van Meynaertshove, Aert’s son, that she by way of “halsmschytinghe”, surrendered the estate of Riller in the name of and for the benefit of Pauwel van Meynaertshoven, Willem’s oldest son, but that the authority to administer high justice that belonged to it continued to belong to her and her descendants[972].
"Walram & his wife had two children:
     "a) HEINRICH (-[6 May/14 Jul] 1343).
     "b) WILHELM (-Italy 31 Oct 1311)."
