Robert Maxwell 4th Lord Maxwell was born between 1493 and 1494.2 He married Janet Douglas after 4 July 1509
; his 1st wife.5 Robert Maxwell 4th Lord Maxwell married Agnes Stuart Countess of Bothwell, daughter of James Stewart 1st Earl of Buchan and Margaret Murray, after October 1516.1,6
Robert Maxwell 4th Lord Maxwell died on 9 July 1546 at Logan.2
; per van de Pas: [quote]Robert Maxwell was born about 1493/4, the son of John Maxwell, 3rd Lord Maxwell, and Agnes Stewart. After 4 July 1509 he married Janet Douglas, daughter of Sir William Douglas, of Drumlanrig, and they became the parents of three children. As 'Maister Maxwell' he served in the Royal household and, before 29 November 1510, was knighted. On 10 June 1513, on his father's resignation, he received a grant of the stewardry of Annandale. He also obtained possession early in life of the important positions so often filled by his ancestors, being in 1515 Warden of the West Marches, and steward and hereditary sheriff of Kirkcudbright.
At the Battle of Flodden, 9 September 1513, his father, together with the king and all the flower of Scottish manhood, was killed, making him Lord Maxwell. He himself was absent as he was on service as admiral of a fleet which was driven back to Scotland by tempest two days after the battle.
His wife having died, he married, between 1520 and 15 November 1525, Agnes, widow of both Lords Bothwell and Home as well as one-time mistress of King James IV, and illegitimate daughter of James Stewart, Earl of Buchan. No children were born from this marriage.
In 1524 he was Captain of the Guard, Provost of Edinburgh, elected a Lord of the Articles and, in 1525, he was in receipt of a pension of 150 marks from the English Court. He became Chief Carver to the King in 1528 and, later on, First Gentleman of the King's Bedchamber, then Extraordinary Lord of Session and a Lord of Regency, in expectation of the King being detained in France.
Accompanying the Master of Glencairn to Paris, on the King's behalf in 1538, they espoused 'by procuratouris as use is' Marie de Lorraine, Duchess of Longueville, and brought her home to Scotland. On 24 November 1542 he was taken prisoner at the crushing defeat of the Scots at Solway Moss. The remainder of his life was passed under suspicion of the English, who doubted the sincerity of his promises to further their policy, and also of the Scots who had no doubt he was betraying Scottish interests to England. Yet he was a great supporter of the reformed religion.
On 9 July 1546 he died at Logan. His widow, before 13 December 1549, married as her fourth husband Cuthbert Ramsay and died in February 1557. [end quote]2
