Reuben Steele married (?) Crockett, daughter of Robert Watkins Crockett and Rachel Watkins.2
Reuben Steele was born in 1720 at co. Argyle, Scotland.1
Reuben Steele died circa 1772; Lost at sea between US and Scotland.1
; Information is from STEELE--A GATHERING OF THE CLAN, by Carl Edmond Steele, Jr. and is partly based on family legend: Reuben came to the U.S. from Scotland, perhaps via Ireland, before 1750. He landed in Philadelphia and soon went to the Shenandoah Valley, near the present Rockbridge County, VA. Their land may have been purchased from the "Borden Grant," which had been given to Benjamin Borden in 1739 by the Virginia colonial government. There was confusion over the settling of Borden's estate in 1743, when he died. When many settlers were unable to get clear title to their land, they left. Sometime in the late 1740s, Reuben took his family to the New River Valley, the hunting ground of several Indian groups. Tradition has it that the Steeles once narrowly escaped death at the hands of the Indians and for that reason, they left the New River Valley by the early 1760s. Both the Steeles and the Crocketts were living in Prince Edward County, VA, along the Buffalo River, in a Scotch-Irish Presbyterian settlement, which had been established in 1735. Later, the family moved again to North Carolina near the "Forks of the Yadkin," near the present Davie and Yadkin Counties. Reuben was living in North Carolina with his family when he made a business trip back to Scotland, but was lost at sea on the return voyage.1 GKJ-6.

Ray Lewis reports in his Lewis-Miles family tree at Rootsweb.com the
following account from ANNALS OF TAZEWELL CO., VA, by John
Newton harman, 1922, pp. 358-9:
"She appears to have descended from Gabriel Gustave de
Crocketagne' through his son, Antoine Dessasure Pernonette de
Crocketagne', a Huguenot and the father of four sons, one of whom likely
was the father of Reuben's wife. Gabriel Gustave Crocketagne', the
ancestor of the Crocketts of Tazewell Co., VA, lived near Montauban, in
the south of France. He married about 1642. His son, Antoine
Dessarure Perronnett de Crocketagne', was born 10 July 1643, near
Montauban. At the age of 21, in 1664, he received a commission in the
household troops of Louis XIV. He married Louise Dessaix, in 1669,
and was later converted to Protestantism by the preaching of James
Fontaine. By reason of his conversion he was banished by Louis XIV
and fled to Ireland in 1667, where he changed his name to Crockett after
the births of his first children. He left 7 children: Gabriel Gustave, born
near Bordeaux, France, 12 Oct. 1672; James, born near Bordeaux, 20
Nov. 1674, married Martha Montgomery, a daughter of Thomas
Montgomery, a sailor in the English Navy; Joseph Louis, born near
Bordeaux, 9 Jan. 1676, married Sarah Stewart, of Donegal, and was the
ancestor of Davy Crockett, who was killed at the Alamo; Robert Watkins,
born 18 Jul., 1678, in Kenmore Parish, Ireland and married Rachel
Watkins; Louise Desix, born 16 Mar., 1680, in Kenmore Parish, Ireland;
Mary Francis, born 20 Sept. 1633, in Kenmore; and Sarah Elizabeth,

Robert "Robin" Steele was born between 1745 and 1750 at Virginia, USA.1
Robert "Robin" Steele died in 1821 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA.1
; Notes from Carl Edmond Steele, Jr.:
Robert moved with his birth family from the New River Valley to Prince
Edward Co., VA, and subsequently to North Carolina near the present
Davie and Yadkin Counties. By 1770, Robert returned to Prince Edward
Co., VA, where he married. Robert and his wife returned to the New
River Valley, where Robert was listed as one of the Tithables in 1772.
His brother Samuel was also living there. Robert and Mary made their
home on Green Hill on Walkers Creek. "Land survey records of
Montgomery Co., Va, indicate he was a settler as early as 1782 in what
is now Bland Co., VA. He owned four tracts of land totalling
approximately 647 acres on Reed Creek and Walkers Creek, both
being branches of the New River. At the time of his will the Reed Creek
property appears to have been sold." A fourth parcel on Walkers Creek
had been acquired from his son, Edmond, in 1813. His name also
appears on 1793 Virginia Personal Property Tax List for Wythe County
in the area north of Walker's Mountain.
In 1978, Carl Edmond Steele, Jr. visited the land owned by Robert
Steele. It had been passed to Robert's wife, Rebecca Oury, then to their
son Crockett Steele. A descendant of Crockett Steele, Wendell
Newberry still owned and farmed the land as late as 1978.
In HISTORY OF PRINCE EDWARD CO., VA, by H. C. Bradshaw, Dietz
Press, 1955, p. 671 shows Robert Steel's name as one who signed a
petition for religious liberty dated Sept. 24, 1776. The petition was also
signed by John Crockett.
In WYTHE COUNTY VIRGINIA WILL BOOKS 1-2, 1790-1822, p. 15,
Robert Steel, along with Godfrey Wm. Smith, and Samuel Newbury
made inventory of the estate of William Rader between Feb. and July
1802.1
