Henry Cromwell 2nd Baron Cromwell died on 20 November 1592; died testate.^1,4,5
      ; Gregory's son, the 2nd Baron, was the subject of an important milestone in English law. He was was arrested in 1572 for contempt of court (an injunction in the Court of Chancery), but the House of Lords insisted on his being freed since as a peer he was immune from arrest in civil actions. His son the 3rd Baron was involved in the abortive putsch of 1600 by the Earl of Essex of a completely different cr (see HEREFORD, V) but was pardoned soon afterwards. He sold his English estates and bought one in northern Ireland instead. His son the 4th Baron, another Thomas, was promoted Earl of Ardglass in January 1644/5, just at the time his more famous cousin Oliver was becoming the leading Parliamentary general. The Barony of Cromwell expired with the Ardglass Earldom in 1687, although the 4th and last Earl of Ardglass's daughter styled herself Baroness Cromwell in her own right under the misapprehension (widely shared at the time) that the Barony created in 1540 had been by writ rather than by patent.²
