Thomas de Gorges of Powerstock, Dorset died in 1236.1
; In the Cotentin peninsula of Normandy, four miles north of Périers is the village and commune of Gorges. Ralph de Gorges who flourished in the latter part of the 11th century is the first traceable member of the family which derived its territorial name from its fief of Gorges. There are other mentions of the name in England and Normandy, but the first proved ancestor of the house of Gorges in England is Thomas de Gorges, lord of the Norman fief at the turn of the 12th century. He lost his property when KING JOHN'S Norman duchy was taken by the King of France. He came to England and was made warden of the royal manor of Powerstock, in Dorset by HENRY III. (See "The Story of a Family through Eleven Centuries: A history of the Family of Gorges" by Raymond Gorges, Boston, privately printed 1944).1 EDV-23 GKJ-23.
