; per van de Pas: [quote] He was only one year old when his father died and he remained under his mother's care. In 1362 and 1363 he was granted the wardship of several manors which had been held by his father, then on 20 December 1364 the wardship of all his father's lands in England and Wales.
In 1359, aged twelve, he married Margaret, fourth daughter of Edward III, King of England, but she died soon after 1 October 1361 and was buried in Abbingdon Abbey. He proved his age on 12 September 1368 and, having done homage and fealty, was granted seisin of his lands in England, Ireland and Wales. In 1368 he married Anne Mauny, a great-granddaughter of Edward I, King of England.
In 1369 he accompanied the Earl of Cambridge to Aquitaine, where he was knighted at the taking of Bourdeille, then served in Poitou and Anjou. On 20 April 1372 he was appointed Lieutenant of the King's forces in Aquitaine, before sailing in command of a fleet with reinforcements. He tried to relieve La Rochelle but was defeated by a much more powerful Spanish fleet in a battle lasting two days, when he was captured.
Taken to Spain, he was kept in prison for nearly three years, being treated very harshly. The Spaniards conveyed their prisoners with chains or cords, like dogs on leash. They were then kept in chains and strictly imprisoned, except Pembroke and Guichart d'Angle; but Froissart afterwards alleged that Pembroke himself was very harshly treated.
Bertrand du Guesclin, Constable of France, then bought his release and he was taken to Paris, where his ransom was fixed at 120,000 francs. He was then taken towards Calais but, worn out with illness and fatigue, he died on the way in Picardie. As he had died in French territory, Bertrand du Guesclin did not get payment of the ransom. The body of John Hastings, Earl of Pembroke, was then taken to England and buried in the church of the Friars Preachers at Hereford. His heir was his only son, not yet three years old.
