Chiles and Henry Chiles Jr. began military service in 1837 at Seminole War, Florida, USA, per Eakin [1983:75-6]: "Henry and hius borther James were members of Colonel Gentry's Regiment which was composed of Jackson County, Missouri men. They were part of the Company of Missouri Volunteers. The newpaper, Missouri Argus, dated 1 Mar 1838 reports: Tribute paid to the memory of Henry Chiles, Esq., by member of the Jackson County, Mo. democrats during a meeting 5 Feb 1838. 'Resolved that we pay a like tribute of repect to one much esteemed friend and neighbor Henry Chiles Esquire, who unfortunately fell in Florida, but who still ives in the bosom and recollection of many friends.' In the Battle of Lake Okeechobee the regiment took the field with 800 men and lost 649. James Chiles was wounded."7 Col. James C. Chiles is mentioned in the probate of the estate of Christopher Lillard "Kit" Chiles on 18 April 1855 at Jackson Co., Missouri, USA; per Eaking [1983:99]: "Christopher died intestate and the Jackson County Court appointed his oldest son, Richard Ballinger Chiles, his administrator on 18 Apr 1855.
