No coat of arms is appended to this pedigree and it is probable that the Phillips were one of those mercantile families who rose to prominence in the Tudor period."1

THE LIGHTFOOTS.
The Lightfoots were among the early colonists in Virginia. They seem to have settled originally in Gloucester and James City when the latter embraced what is now Charles City County. Colonel Philip Lightfoot was a vestryman of Petsworth Parish as early as 1683. By his last will he devised his lands to his eldest son Francis, remainder to his son Philip.
Francis devised his lands to his daughter Elizabeth, who married Peter Randolph of Henrico; remainder to his brother Philip Lightfoot. The entail was docked by the House of Burgesses in 1740, and by agreement between the parties these lands were vested in Philip Lightfoot.

The present writer remembers to have seen at Sandy Point in Charles City when it was owned and occupied by Col. Robt. B. Bolling, divers portraits of the old Lightfoots. There were three William Lightfoots in succession at Sandy Point, and their tombs are still there. The first died in 1727, the second in 1809, and the third in 1810. We have in our possession now a copy of Bayles' folio dictionary, in ten volumes, with the name and coat-of-arms of William Lightfoot Tedington on each volume. Tedington was one of the four farms which composed the splendid estate of Sandy Point, between the James and Chickahominy Rivers. Three of these farms were inherited by Miss Minge (Mrs. Robert B. Bolling), and the fourth was added by Mr. Bolling.

There is a family of Lightfoots at Port Royal, Caroline, represented by the late Philip Lightfoot and his sons, Lewis Lightfoot and his brother John.

In 1726 we find the name of Major Goodrich Lightfoot as a member of the vestry of St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania, when that parish and county embraced what was afterwards the parish of St. Mark's and county of Culpeper. He was one of the lay readers at the Germanna Church, and he and Robert Slaughter were appointed to count all the tobacco plants from the mouth of the Rapidan to the mouth of Mountain Run, and up Mountain Run and across to the mouth of the Robinson River, in obedience to an Act of the Assembly limiting the number of plants to be cultivated by each planter.

At the organization of St. Mark's Parish, at Germanna in 1731, he was chosen a member of the first vestry by the freeholders and housekeepers of St. Mark's, his home being within the limits of the new parish. He served as vestryman and churchwarden till his death in 1738, and was succeeded by Captain Goodrich Lightfoot in 1741, who served till his removal from the parish in 1771. William Lightfoot was also a vestryman from 1752 to 1758, when he moved out of its bounds to the parish of Bromfield, which had been cut off from St. Mark's in 1752. William, we think, was the father of Goodrich, who married the daughter of the Rev. Henry Fry, who lived in the fork of Crooked Run and the Robinson River. Goodrich Lightfoot lived opposite to the present home of George Clark, Esq., on the Robinson River. He was the brother of the late Major Philip Lightfoot of the Culpeper bar, and of Walker Lightfoot (clerk), and he was the father of Frank Lightfoot, clerk of Culpeper, who married Miss Fielder (father of Col. Charles E. Lightfoot), and of Edward, of Madison, who married Miss Conner, and is the father of Virginia; and John, who married Miss Turner, the granddaughter of Major John Roberts of the Revolution, whose wife was the daughter of the old vestryman Captain Robert Pollard.

From the names of Philip, John, and William, which were common to these several branches of the Lightfoots, the presumption is that they sprang from the same stock.

Subject: Question on Mary Chew

Hi Mike - There is no different source for parents that I know of for Mary Chew born 1690ish who married Goodrich Lightfoot and is one of those records you 'fly by the seat of your pants'. I have her parents as Larkin Chew and Hannah Smith Roy because the dates worked out best and also because they were in Virginia.
We do know that Goodrich Lighfoot's wife is Mary Chew but I cannot find a record stating who are her parents . (see record below).

Colonial Families of the United States of America:
COL. FRANCIS SLAUGHTER, b. in Essex County, Virginia, 1701; d. in Culpeper, 1766; Captain of Militia, later Colonel, Justice, Vestryman and Church Warden; m. 3d June, 1729, Anne LIGHTFOOT, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, b. 22d September, [p.461] 1708, d. 1748, dau. of Major Goodrich and Mary (CHEW) LIGHTFOOT, he the son of Col. ; Williams/Morton [2007:89] cites "Hennings Stat. V. P. III."1
; NB: per Lillard (1991, p. 11): "Extensive research has not produced any reference in the extant records to a Benjamin Lillard who married Elizabeth Lightfoot. This lineage is apparently based entirely upon family traditions as related by Lillards of earlier generations. But these statements of tradition are not direct evidence because the declarants did not have personal knowledge of the events and relationships they described." I am still searching for the parents of Elizabeth.
Several family trees on Ancestry.com (e.g., Karen's Family Tree) show this Elizabeth who m. Benjamin Lillard. Based on such sources, I had assigned this Elizabeth as the dau. of John Lightfoot, Esq. and his wife Elizabeth Phillips. According to William/Morton (2007:34] This John and Elizabeth did have a daughter named Elizabeth, but she married a John Turner. The Elizabeth (b. ca 1701 d. ) who m. Benjamin lived too late to be a daughter of John and Elizabeth. The daughter named Elizabeth of John and Elizabeth was b. bef 1648 (when her father died): more than 50 years before the birth of the Elizabeth who m. Benjamin Lillard
Some of the Ancestry family trees cite the Colonial Famililes of the USA, 1607-1775 database with pages from MacKenzie & Rhodes (copies of the images of the pages cited are attached). MacKenzie & Rhodes show the following lineage (in ahnentafel form):
1. Ann Lightfoot b. 22 Sep 1708 d. 1748; m. 3 June 1729 Col Francis Slaughter b. 1701 d. 1766
2. Maj. Goodrich Lightfoot m.
3. Mary Chew
4. Col. John Lightfoot d. 1707
5. Ann Goodrich
6-7. ---
8. John Lightfoot, Esq.
9. Elizabeth Phillipps
10-15. ---
16. Rev. Richard Lightfoot
17. Jane Jones

however, later research (e.g., Richardson [2013] shows several errors in the MacKenzie & Rhodes ascent, the most important of which is that there is a generation missing between Col John Lightfoot (c1650-1707) and John Lightfoot, Esq. (1598-1648). Another error in the MacKenzie & Rhodes line is that Rev. Richard Lightfoot (c1562-1625) m. Jane ASKE (not Jane Jones).
The corrected line with the corrected generations highlighted is:
1. Ann Lightfoot b. 22 Sep 1708 d. 1748; m. 3 June 1729 Col Francis Slaughter b. 1701 d. 1766
2. Maj. Goodrich Lightfoot m.
3. Mary Chew
4. Col. John Lightfoot d. 1707
5. Ann Goodrich
6-7. ---
8. Capt. John Lightfoot II b. ca 1623 d. 1682
9. Elizabeth Taylor/Tailor d. bef 1687
1015. ---
16. John Lightfoot, Esq.
17. Elizabeth Phillipps
18-31. ---
32. Rev. Richard Lightfoot
33. Jane Aske

Many (more than 100) Ancestry family trees assign Elizabeth as a daughter of William/John Lightfoot and an Elizabeth Phillips. Some of these show the John and Elizabeth I list above. Others show this William/John as the son of Philip Lightfoot (1643-1708) and Alice Corbin 1660-1713). I am so far unable to confirm that Philip and Alice had a son named William (or John).
Conclusion: I have chosen to show no parents for Elizabeth for the moment. GA Vaut.9,2,10,11,12,13,14,15
