Benjamin Heuschkell

M, #1026
ChartsAncestors - George Ruben MEEK
ReferenceEDV5
Last Edited30 Jul 2014
Benjamin Heuschkell was born at Germany.
; from Marks Ancestry Web Page:
Benjamin Heuschkell-[2900] 14,15 was born on an unknown date in Germany and died in Said To Be Fredericksburg Virginia.

Benjamin, the father of the three German immigrant brothers, came to this country in 1737, landing at Norfolk Va. His surname is put down in the above form for reasons
already given. No proof of this landing is available as lists of immigrant arrivals at Norfolk are understood not to be in existence for the period 1730 - 1750. Family
traditions however are in general agreement on the place and date of landing and also in stating that he was born in Germany or came from there. That he had resided in
Holland fora considerable period period of years after leaving Germany and before setting out for America is not supported by family tradition or evidence but seems to
be a sound assumption. He apparantly departed for America approximately thirty years after the date when he most likely left Germany. His third son, Christopher was
born in Amsterdam Holland accordingt to early family accounts. When his three sons migrated to this country, there is evidence that they were using speech habits
indicating a long period of residence in Holland.

Practically all that is known about Benjamin Hueschkell is contained in a short account which seems to have originated in Virginia at a moderately early date. Had it been
put into writingin his lifetime or soon thereafter a reference in the United States would not have been made, but rather to the American Colonies. The account was
definately being passed around in the Heiskell branch near the beginning of the present century. In the first four versions which reached me in essentially the same
wording the account ran as follows

Benjamin Heiskell came to the United States from Frankfurt-on-Main Germany in 1737. He landed and took up residence at Norfolk Virginia and after some little time
moved from there to Fredericksburg Virginia. where he spent the rest of his life. He died and was buried in Fredericksburg He had fifteen children.

One version added the words after "children": "some of them born in the old country" No definate account of any of his children being born in America has come down but
for a wife and daughter (see under Michael Heuschkell)

What caused Benjamin to leave German, take up residence at Amsterdam and eventually migrate to the American Colonies is not referred to in any known family
tradition. A study of the history of the so called period provides a very possible answer. In the so called War of Speanich Succession the armies of Louis XIV of France
overan the districts along the Rhine in a very ruthless manner. The object was to reduce these districts to such ruin that they would be unable to support forces for the
invasion of France or for defense of the German Fatherland.

The limited information available on Benjamin indicates that he left the Rhine Region at the time when the great migration of displaced germans took place. His later
descion to try his fortune in the New World seems to have been based on the same motive that compelled so many of his countrymen to do likewise.

If his fifteen children, or practically all of them were born before he left Europe, he would appear to be well past middle age when he landed in Norfolk 16

Research: Another date for the arrival of the Heiskells in America is given as August 28 1750 on the Ship Phoenix mastered by John Mason from Rotterdam last by
Cowes 16

Oral and written family history points to his death before age 30 and all records indicate he was killed by Indians in a corn field. It is not known if this was on his land or another location. To date, the year being 2001, there has been no record of his burial found.3
