Roland (Roald) le Strange died before 1158.1,2
; ROALD 'Le STRANGE' or 'EXTRANEUS' may have been a Breton and was of a family that seems to have migrated from Brittany to England (hence his second name, whether in its French or Latin form). But it is less certain that his family were actually of Breton origin. He testified to a charter before 1122 and was a tenant of Alan fitz Fleald (see MORAY, E) in Mileham, Norfolk; also held land in Hunstanton, Norfolk; m Maud, dau of Ralph fitz Herlewin or Ralph de Hunstanton, and was in all probability dead by 1158, having had, with two other but not necessarily yr sons (Hamon, held land in Cheswardine, Salop, d by 1163/4; Guy, granted land in Alveley, Salop, Sheriff Salop 1159-60, had at least two daus).2

; The first recorded ancestor of this family is ROLAND LE STRANGE, of Brittany, mentioned in deeds dated 1112 and 1122, who came to England temp. HENRY I; m Matilda Le Brun, dau and eventual heiress of Ralph Fitz Herluin (alias Ralph de Hunstanton), mesne lord of lands at Hunstanton under Roger Bigod, tenant in capite, and had issue.3 GAV-24 EDV-22 GKJ-23.

GKJ-22. Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn Prince of Powys-Wenwynwyn was also known as Griffith de la Pole Prince of Upper Powys.5

; GRUFFYDD AP GWENWYNWYN lord of Powys, 1240-86. Powys remained in the hands of Llywelyn until his death in 1240. Soon afterwards Gwenwynwyn's son, Gruffydd, who had been only a year old on his father's death, was granted the lordship of Southern Powys by HENRY III, but on very strict terms. Gruffydd held these lands intermittently during a constant power struggle with LLYWELYN AP GRUFFYDD, finding himself again in exile in 1257, imprisoned in 1263 - in which year he changed his allegiance to Llywelyn - and in exile again in 1274. Although reinstated in his lands in 1277 he held them only under the authority of the English king and, after his death in 1286, all lands passed to the English crown.
