Originally he was buried on Reamers Farm near Berryville, Virginia. Later he was moved to grave 3990 in the Winchester National Cemetery in Virginia. I have in my possession a copy of a letter that William wrote home to his father from Baltimore in 1862. There is a lithograph of a man with flowing robes in the upper left hand corner, carrying a flag-like banner with Excelsior printed on it. The letter reads as follows:


"Dear Father,

I received your letter this morning and was glad to here from you. You did not say whether you was well or not but we are both well and hop these few lines may find you the same. You says you want…home but…I can't get home. We should...cone use our leave time…our leave home like officers. I think my longs is inffected frome deep colds. We had a examination today and the…got my discharge but I don't know but I shall try to get a firlow and come home as soon as I can. I want to see you all very much. A great…redgement…they way Reidcliff and they are going every day as fast they can get the chance they are dezerting. I saw Benjamin Gardner today that I should like to discharged…but I don't want to be called a dezerter. I have got some money I should like you to have the use of but don't know how to get it to you. I have twenty dolers. If you had it it might be of some use to you please take care of my read boat until I come home. I have no more to say at present but will write as soon as I can.
