Mrs. Carter, 83, Dies at Van Vleet
Funeral services were conducted from the Van Vleet Methodist Church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock for Mrs. Anna Shaw Carter, age 83, who died at her home in Van Vleet early Monday evening. She had been in failing health for some time, and ill for the past seven months.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Crawford Ray, pastor of the Houlka Methodist Church; the Rev. L C Jorgensen, pastor of the Houston Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. S P Ashmore of Aberdeen, district superintendent of the Aberdeen district.

Interment was in the Ashbury Cemetery with Houston Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were: Hugh Lee Peden, Bill Clements, Robert Ashby, Turner Ray, Howard Ray and Thomas Davis.

Mrs. Carter was a lifelong resident of Chickasaw county and had spent her entire life at Van Vleet, where she was a devout member of the Van Vleet Methodist Church.

She leaves two sons, P D Carter and H B Carter, both of Van Vleet, and a sister, Mrs. R L Bishop of Houston.

     Judge Vaught gained his fame as a judge while presiding over the trial of George "Machine Gun" Kelly in the Charles Urschel Kidnaping case in 1933 in Oklahoma City.

     Death Saturday claimed Oklahoma's best known federal judge, Edgar S Vaught, 86, in his home at 1422 NW 36.
     Vaught, who was appointed federal judge May 31, 1928, served continuously on the bench until Jan 7, 1956, when he "retired" but continued to hold court throughout the United States. He received his appointment from President Calvin Coolidge.
     Vaught was stricken at his home shortly after 9am Saturday and died almost instantly, apparently from a blood clot.
     The judge, a former Oklahoma City high school principal and superintendent of schools was ...at Dandridge TN, Nov 1, 1899.
     The Vaughts moved to Oklahoma City in 1901. Vaught first served as principal of the Oklahoma City high school and then became superintendent of schools. He studied law at night and was admitted to the bar in 1905, starting private practice the following year.
     He left private practice to accept the federal judgeship from President Coolidge in 1928 after having served as international president of the Lions Club in 1922.
     He won wide attention when he held unconstitutional five New Deal codes--those governing petroleum, automobile, hotel, dairy and dry cleaning industries. The decisions later were sustained by higher courts.
     Although he "retired" from the bench in 1956, he remained on active call and held court throughout the United States.
     A few months after his retirement, he was called to Washington DC to help clear a crowded court docket. In about a month he disposed of 20 cases, 19 of them before juries, with production-line speed.
     His bench colleagues in the District of Columbia wondered if his "retirement" was a "myth or a technicality."
     The judge would not know until minutes before he went on the bench what cases he would hear. Sometimes the jackets would be placed before him as he entered the courtroom.
     Court hours in Washington are from 10am until 4:30pm. The judge liked to point out that in Oklahoma City, he was used to working from 9:30am until 5pm.
     He followed the football fortunes of the University of Oklahoma wherever he went and was an avid fisherman.
     The judge maintained his offices on the ninth floor of the courthouse here. There he had a complete series of portraits of the US supreme court justices from John Jay to Earl Warren.
     The last five are personally signed by chief justices under whom he has served--William Howard Taft, Charles Evans Hughes, Harlan Stone, Fred Vinson and Warren.
     Judge Vaught is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Wayman J (Ruth) Thompson, 3120 NW 19 and Mrs Marquis S (Eleanor) Morris, El Reno, and one son, Edgar S Vaught Jr of the home and one sister, Mrs Kathryn Ayers, 2612 N Military. There also are two granddaughters and a great grandson.
     Services will be announced by Hahn-Cook Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rose Hill mausoleum. The judge's family prefers that friends wishing to make memorial contributions do so with donations to the Medical Research Foundation.

     Eleanor Vaught Morris, 85, died Monday, Feb 16, 1987 at home in El Reno.
     She is survived by her husband, Marquis Stone Morris of the home; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and John Bentley and grandson, John Morris Bentley all of Oklahoma City; her sister, Mrs Wayman J Thompson; and her brother, Edgar S Vaught.
     Eleanor was the daughter of the late Judge and Mrs Edgar S Vaught. She was born in Dandridge TN and lived in OKC until her marriage in 1927. Mrs Morris was a member of Alhenaeum Club and Wesley Methodist Church in El Reno.

     Edgar graduated from Central High School and attended Dartmouth College and graduated from Oklahoma University and Oklahoma University School of Law. He served in the US Navy, earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and The Men's Dinner Club and was a life long member of St Luke's Methodist Church.
     Preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mrs M Stone Morris; his nephew, Wayman J Thompson Jr. He is survived by his sister, Mrs Wayman J Thompson; and niece, Mrs John W Bentley both of OKC and a niece, Mrs W Rowland Denman of Edmond; his cousin, James D Vaught of Yukon; 3 grand nieces, Mrs Robert DeGraffenreid of OKC, Amy Vaught Denman of Seattle WA, and Susan Bancroft Thompson of Arlington VA; a grand nephew, John M Bentley and a great grand niece, Madeline Blake Bentley of OKC.

     Ruth Vaught Thompson, 98, died peacefully at home on March 31, 2007. Ruth was born May 5, 1908, in Oklahoma City, where she lived her entire life, the daughter of Judge Edgar S. Vaught and Mary Holtsinger Vaught. She attended Oklahoma City High School (which became Central High School), Hollis College, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She married Dr. Wayman J. Thompson, on November 9, 1932. They were married 56 years until his death in 1989. She attended St. Luke's United Methodist Church until 1948 when she and Wayman joined May Avenue United Methodist Church with their children. She was a dedicated member of her church circle there. A member of the Junior League of Oklahoma City, Ruth was chairman of the League's first Thrift Shop (now called the Remarkable Shop), which was in downtown Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Wayman J. Thompson, Sr; her son, Dr. Wayman J. Thompson, Jr; her brother, Edgar S. Vaught, Jr; ahd her sister, Eleanor Morris of El Reno. Surviving her are daughter and son-inlaw, Mary and Rowland Denman, Edmond; daughter-in-law, Ann Rivers Thompson Hutcheson, Vienna, Virginia; granddaughters, Beth Denman DeGraffenreid and husband, Robert, Oklahoma City, Amy Vaught Denman Weisz and husband, Paul, Anacortes, Washington, and Susan Thompson-Hoel and husband, John Hoel, Vienna, Virginia; great grandchildren are Jeremy and Brooke DeGraffenreid, Rachel, Elissa, Sarah and Jacob Weisz, and Jack, Tyler and Porter Hoel. She is also survived by niece, Mary Bentley, husband, John; nephews, Lee B. Thompson, Jr., Judge Ralph G. Thompson and wife, Barbara; and niece, Carolyn Zachritz and husband, Don. All the family members wish to express their deepest gratitude to DeLois Kemp, Jean Combs and Kay Mee, for their care and compassion during her last years. Ruth was very proud of her family and devoted to each one of them. Her home and her kitchen were always welcome places for friends of Wayman, Jr. and Mary. In later years, she cherished 'getting to take care of' her granddaughters. Her family and friends are left with many precious memories. Ruth was laid to rest on April 4, 2007, at Rose Hill Mausoleum, following a private family service. However, Elizabeth (Stemp) and John apparently were married in 1809, which makes a birthdate birthdate unlikely before 1793 (when Elizabeth would have been at least 16) unlikely. It is therefore possible that John had two different wives named Elizabeth: the first one he married in 1809 and the second one who appeared by the 1850 census. However, the older women in John's household all allow for the possibility that the Elizabeth in the 1850 census, born c1801, could match the women in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.

     1. Estill Vaught, a descendant of John and Elizabeth Vaught, is quoted as saying that his ancestor, John, came to KY from Wythe Co., VA. Estill also said that John had a brother, Andrew Vaught, who also came to KY from Wythe Co., VA. (source----Faye Stogsdill of Pu.Co., KY.)
To support item (1) above, the following items are based on original records from VA and KY.
     2. The will of George Vaught names a son John and a son Andrew. (will written in 1825 and proved in 1835 Wythe Co., VA. Source 13 above).

     5. The oldest child of John and Elizabeth in KY was born ca 1810 in VA. (1850 Census Pulaski Co., KY and bible records of John and Elizabeth Vaught). In 1809 marriage in VA is indicated.      6. Jacob Vaught, s/o Henry was surety for the 1809 marriage of John and Elizabeth. Jacob and Henry went to KY in the Fall of 1811. Two years later John and Elizabeth followed Jacob to KY and settled near Jacob in Pulaski Co., KY. (Sources 2,3,5,7, and 8 above)
     7. John and Elizabeth Vaught came to KY in 1813. The 1850 census Pulaski Co., KY shows that their children were born in VA up to 1812 and born in KY after 1813.      11. George and Christiana's son Andrew came to KY circa 1828. That George had a son Andrew is shown in George's will and by a German birth fraktur dated 1787. Andrew's first land purchase and his first appearance on the tax list in Pu.Co., KY was in 1828. Andrew arrived in KY 18 years after Gaspar and his son John and 15 years after John and Elizabeth. The land which Andrew purchased in 1828 was 3 miles from his brother John Vaught (wife Elizabeth Slemp), over 1 mile from his 1st cousin John Vaught (wife Nancy White), 1.5 miles from his first cousin Henry Vaught (wife Molly), 2 miles from his Uncle Henry Vaught (wife Esther), 2 miles from his 1st cousin Jacob Vaught and was next to his sister Mary (Vaught) Carson.
