Jefferson Vaught is mentioned in the will of George Vaught on 13 March 1825 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA; per Spurlin [1994:V:8] "The will names sons David, John, Andrew, George, Peter, Charles, Joseph, Jefferson, and Abriana. It also Names daughters Mary, Elizabeth, and Christiana."2,5

Jefferson Vaught was listed as a resident in George Vaught and Christiana Barbara Phillippi's household in the census report in 1830 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA;
George is on the same page as at least six of his children: David, Peter, George, Charles, Abram and Elizabeth. There are two Georges on this page, one older than the other so likely father and son. The people listed in this household seem to match George and his wife, plus four children, plus an unidentified femail child ("under 5").
     Spurlin [1994:V:8] speculated that the two elderly people in the household of the elizabeth VAUGHT on the same page were George's dau. Elizabeth with George and Christiana in her household. I cannot reconcile the two separate listings, George the elder and Elizabeth. GA Vaut

Judge Edgar Sullins Vaught Sr. died on 5 December 1959 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma, USA, at age 86.2
Judge Edgar Sullins Vaught Sr. was buried after 5 December 1959 at Rose Hill Burial Park, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma, USA; from Find A Grave:
     Birth:      Jan. 7, 1873, Speedwell, Wythe County, Virginia, USA
     Death:      Dec. 5, 1959, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, USA
     Judge Vaught gained his fame as a judge while presiding over the trial of George "Machine Gun" Kelly in the Charles Urschel Kidnaping case in 1933 in Oklahoma City.
     Inducted into Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1941
     Obituary: Vaught, Famed Federal Judge-Churchman, Dies; Heart Attack Is Fatal at 86 in City Home; Long Career Colorful.
     Death Saturday claimed Oklahoma's best known federal judge, Edgar S Vaught, 86, in his home at 1422 NW 36.
     Vaught, who was appointed federal judge May 31, 1928, served continuously on the bench until Jan 7, 1956, when he "retired" but continued to hold court throughout the United States. He received his appointment from President Calvin Coolidge.
     Vaught was stricken at his home shortly after 9am Saturday and died almost instantly, apparently from a blood clot.
     The judge, a former Oklahoma City high school principal and superintendent of schools was ...at Dandridge TN, Nov 1, 1899.
     The Vaughts moved to Oklahoma City in 1901. Vaught first served as principal of the Oklahoma City high school and then became superintendent of schools. He studied law at night and was admitted to the bar in 1905, starting private practice the following year.
     He left private practice to accept the federal judgeship from President Coolidge in 1928 after having served as international president of the Lions Club in 1922.
     He won wide attention when he held unconstitutional five New Deal codes--those governing petroleum, automobile, hotel, dairy and dry cleaning industries. The decisions later were sustained by higher courts.
     Although he "retired" from the bench in 1956, he remained on active call and held court throughout the United States.
     A few months after his retirement, he was called to Washington DC to help clear a crowded court docket. In about a month he disposed of 20 cases, 19 of them before juries, with production-line speed.
     His bench colleagues in the District of Columbia wondered if his "retirement" was a "myth or a technicality."
     The judge would not know until minutes before he went on the bench what cases he would hear. Sometimes the jackets would be placed before him as he entered the courtroom.
     Court hours in Washington are from 10am until 4:30pm. The judge liked to point out that in Oklahoma City, he was used to working from 9:30am until 5pm.
     He followed the football fortunes of the University of Oklahoma wherever he went and was an avid fisherman.
     The judge maintained his offices on the ninth floor of the courthouse here. There he had a complete series of portraits of the US supreme court justices from John Jay to Earl Warren.
     The last five are personally signed by chief justices under whom he has served--William Howard Taft, Charles Evans Hughes, Harlan Stone, Fred Vinson and Warren.
     Judge Vaught is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Wayman J (Ruth) Thompson, 3120 NW 19 and Mrs Marquis S (Eleanor) Morris, El Reno, and one son, Edgar S Vaught Jr of the home and one sister, Mrs Kathryn Ayers, 2612 N Military. There also are two granddaughters and a great grandson.
     Services will be announced by Hahn-Cook Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rose Hill mausoleum. The judge's family prefers that friends wishing to make memorial contributions do so with donations to the Medical Research Foundation.

     John Vaught was born circa 1781 at Cripple Creek, Wythe Co., Virginia, USA; Find A Grave says b in Montgomery Co., VA; aged 69 in 1850 census.1,3,4 He married Elizabeth Slemp on 11 July 1809 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA;
There is a discrepancy in the birthdates of the older women who were probably John's wife (wives) in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses.
     Census     Age     Implied Birth Year
     1830     20 thru 29     1801-1810
     1840     40 thru 49     1791-1800
     1850     49     1801
However, Elizabeth (Stemp) and John apparently were married in 1809, which makes a birthdate birthdate unlikely before 1793 (when Elizabeth would have been at least 16) unlikely. It is therefore possible that John had two different wives named Elizabeth: the first one he married in 1809 and the second one who appeared by the 1850 census. However, the older women in John's household all allow for the possibility that the Elizabeth in the 1850 census, born c1801, could match the women in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.

Reasons why John Vaught (wife Elizabeth) in Pulaski Co., KY. is John Vaught, s/o George Vaught and his wife Christiana Phillippi.

1. Estill Vaught, a descendant of John and Elizabeth Vaught, is quoted as saying that his ancestor, John, came to KY from Wythe Co., VA. Estill also said that John had a brother, Andrew Vaught, who also came to KY from Wythe Co., VA. (source----Faye Stogsdill of Pu.Co., KY.)

To support item (1) above, the following items are based on original records from VA and KY.

2. The will of George Vaught names a son John and a son Andrew. (will written in 1825 and proved in 1835 Wythe Co., VA. Source 13 above).

3. The Slemps were neighbors of George Vaught on Cripple Creek in Wythe Co., VA. (VA land records Source 6 above)

4. John Vaught married Elizabeth Slemp in 1809 in Wythe Co., VA (VA marriage records, Source 5 above)

5. The oldest child of John and Elizabeth in KY was born ca 1810 in VA. (1850 Census Pulaski Co., KY and bible records of John and Elizabeth Vaught). In 1809 marriage in VA is indicated. The ONLY John Vaught marriage in Wythe Co., VA during the time period of interest is the one in item 4 above. (Sources 2, 3, and 20 above)

6. Jacob Vaught, s/o Henry was surety for the 1809 marriage of John and Elizabeth. Jacob and Henry went to KY in the Fall of 1811. Two years later John and Elizabeth followed Jacob to KY and settled near Jacob in Pulaski Co., KY. (Sources 2,3,5,7, and 8 above)

7. John and Elizabeth Vaught came to KY in 1813. The 1850 census Pulaski Co., KY shows that their children were born in VA up to 1812 and born in KY after 1813. John bought his first land in 1813 in Pulaski Co., KY and John is on the tax list in 1813. George, in his will written 1825 states that John was one of his sons who was "already taken care of". (Sources 2,3,7,8,9, and 13 above)

8. George Vaught was born 1740-1750 (see 1830 census Wythe Co., VA under Elizabeth Vaught, head of household.) Cristiana Phillippi, his wife was born in Dec 1763, (see Phillippi Family Tree" p 26) George and Christiana were married ca 1781 when she was about 17. Their chicldren were born after 1781 and were of marriage age starting in 1797. John, son of George, is the right age to be in an 1809 marriage. (Sources 3 and 19 above)

9. John (wife Elizabeth) died in 1861. (Probate records Pulaski Co., KY). The vital statistics for 1861 in Pulaski Co., KY show John dying at age 77 on 30 Jun 1861. This is consistant with a birth date of 1784. On the death record John's father is named as George Vaught.
The George Vaughts were:
(a.) George Vaught who married Barbara Mees in 1804 in Wythe Co., VA.
(b.) George Vaught who married Anna King in 1804 in Wythe Co., VA.
(c.) George Vaught who married Elizabeth Wampler in Wythe Co., VA. and had no children.
(d.) George Vaught who married Christina Yeagley in Rockingham Co., VA ca 1808.
(e.) George Vaught who married Mary Persinger in 1789 in Botetourt Co., VA.
( f.) George Vaught who married Christiana Phillippi in Montgomery Co., VA ca 1781.
The ONLY George Vaught listed above that could have had a son John in 1784 was ( f.) There were No Other George Vaughts during this time period. (Sources 5,12, and 23 above).

10. The Children of George Vaught and his wife Christiana Phillippi were:
David
John
* Andrew
George
Peter
Charles
*Joseph
Jefferson
Abraham
*Stephen
*Mary
*Elizabeth
Christiana

The Children of John and Elizabeth were:
Sarah
*Mary
*Andrew
*John Joseph
*Stephen
Jane
*Elizabeth
Margaret
Fountain Fox

Five of John's children were named for five of his brothers and sisters. It was a trend among the Germans to name children for brothers and sisters instead of grandparents, great grandparents etc. (Sources 12,13,14,15 and 18 above.)

11. George and Christiana's son Andrew came to KY circa 1828. That George had a son Andrew is shown in George's will and by a German birth fraktur dated 1787. Andrew's first land purchase and his first appearance on the tax list in Pu.Co., KY was in 1828. Andrew arrived in KY 18 years after Gaspar and his son John and 15 years after John and Elizabeth. The land which Andrew purchased in 1828 was 3 miles from his brother John Vaught (wife Elizabeth Slemp), over 1 mile from his 1st cousin John Vaught (wife Nancy White), 1.5 miles from his first cousin Henry Vaught (wife Molly), 2 miles from his Uncle Henry Vaught (wife Esther), 2 miles from his 1st cousin Jacob Vaught and was next to his sister Mary (Vaught) Carson. (see land map, p xiv) Sources 6,7,8,9,10,21 and 22 above.)11
Reference: Spurlin & Martin [1989-95:II:16-21] has an extensive discussion regarding the dispute over the identiy of this John VAUGHT (m. Nancy WHITE) versus the John VAUGHT (m. Elizabeth SLEMP), including citation of numerous sources.12
John Vaught is mentioned in the will of George Vaught on 13 March 1825 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA; per Spurlin [1994:V:8] "The will names sons David, John, Andrew, George, Peter, Charles, Joseph, Jefferson, and Abriana. It also Names daughters Mary, Elizabeth, and Christiana."2,13

Elizabeth Slemp1

F, #77238, b. circa 1801, d. 1861
ChartsDescendents of John (Johann) Paul VOGT/VAUGHT
Last Edited30 Oct 2018
     Elizabeth Slemp was born circa 1801; Aged 49 in 1850 census.1,2 She married John Vaught, son of George Vaught and Christiana Barbara Phillippi, on 11 July 1809 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA;

Joseph Vaught is mentioned in the will of George Vaught on 13 March 1825 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA; per Spurlin [1994:V:8] "The will names sons David, John, Andrew, George, Peter, Charles, Joseph, Jefferson, and Abriana. It also Names daughters Mary, Elizabeth, and Christiana."2,7

Joseph Vaught was listed as a resident in George Vaught and Christiana Barbara Phillippi's household in the census report in 1830 at Wythe Co., Virginia, USA;
GA Vaut
