Inscription: On the upper part of the stone:
Here Lie the Remains of DABNEY CARR, Son of John and Barbara Carr, of Louisa County, VA., Born Ocbober 26, 1743, Intermarried July 20, 1765, with Martha Jefferson, Daughter of
Peter and Jane Randolph Jefferson. Died May 16, 1773, at Charlottesville, VA.
LAMENTED SHADE!
Whom every gift of Heaven profusely blest,
A Temper winning mild, nor pity softer,
Nor was truth more bright, constant in doing
Well, he neither sought nor shunned applause.
No bashful merit signed near him neglected;
Sympathizing he wiped off the tear from sorrow's
Clouded eye, and with kindly hand taught
Her heart to smile.
To His Virtue, Good Sense, Learning and Friendship, this stone is dedicated by Thomas Jefferson, who of all men loved him most.
Still shall thy grave with rising flowers be dressed And the green turf lie lightly on thy breast; There shall the morn her earliest tears bestow, There the first roses of the year shall blow, White angels with their silver wings o'ershade The ground now sacred by thy reliques made.
Found in Thomas Jefferson's papers after his death:

p. 84 - 85. From William Collier, planter of Charles City Co., Va...
"William Collier's widow, Mary (Rivers) Collier, married William Terrell prior to August Court 1749 when their marriage contract was proved. William Terrell, planter, owned property in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, and in Charles City County. By 1762 Mary (Rivers) Collier Terrell was again widowed with a family of eight children, four by her first husband, William Collier, and four by her second husband, William Terrell. After 1762 Mary Collier does not appear again in existing Charles City court reords so it is possible that she died shortly after this date.
About 1762, Mary (Rivers) Collier Terrell's children brought suit against her in Charles City County Court as the "Adm'x of William Terrell, dec'd, who was executor of Robert Rivers, dec'd..." The division of Rivers slaves, recorded in August Court 1762, is important in documenting the children of Mary (Rivers) Collier Terrell by her two husbands. Obviously, children by each of her marriages inherited since their right to the property came through their mother. The division os Rivers' slaves was as follows: Charles Collier received Ben and Lucy; William Christian (in right of his wife Elizabeth [Collier] Christian) received Black Peter and Alice; Mildred Collier received Jack, Phil and Isham; and William Collier received Nancy and George; Richmond Terrell acquired Yellow Peter; Rebecca Terrell received Dick; Martha Terrell received Sam; and William Terrell received Robin.
Mary (Rivers) Collier Terrell's eight children who survived to adulthood and their descendants intermarried with the leading families of Charles City and New Kent counties, leaving numerous progeny today:
....William Terrell, Jr., fourth child of William and Mary (Rivers) Collier Terrell, was born on 8 Oct 1758 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County."2 Mary Rivers married William Terrell Sr., son of Richmond III Terrell and Catherine Crump, circa July 1749 at Charles City Co., Virginia, USA,
; Per Dicken [1952:34]: "In Charles City O. B. 173701757, p. 504, the marriage bond of William Terrell and Mary Collier was ordered to be recorded at July Court 1749."1
Mary Rivers died before 1772; Per Dicken [1952:34]: "...in 1772 their son, William Terrell, was under the guardianship of William Christian of Charles City County..."1

; Per Dicken [1952:82]: "It is our conclusion that Edward garland, who married Miss Terrell, must have been born about 1710-1716, and was perhaps a grandson of Edward, Sr., who died soon after he made his will dated 14 Mar. 1719. Edward and Miss Terrell must have married about 1736 or 1737, as their first child was born 13 July 1738....It has been said that John Garland [son of Edward Garland, Sr.] had a son Edward, though he was not named in his father's will 1734. We do not know if Capt. Peter Garland was married, and had a family or not."1

John Terrell was born on 15 June 1618 at Reading, Berkshire, England.2,3 He was baptized on 25 June 1618 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Reading, Berkshire, England.2
John Terrell died on 13 March 1661/62 at London, City of London, Greater London, England, at age 43.2
; NB: I have based my listing of the ancestors of Richmond (I) TERRELL "The Immigrant", and his brothers William, Robert and John, on the revised genealogy published by the Terrell Society of America (TSA - available on its website). The TSA genealogy is based on the work done by Joseph Henry Tyrrell [1910], Emily Dicken [1952], and O. F. Brown [1982] with elaborations and additional research by TSA contributors.
Tyrrell [1910] posited a genealogy tracing the American TERRELLS from Richard "The Immigrant", back to William the Conqueror and to much earlier English lines. This lineage depended on linking the immigrant Tyrells to the noble British Tyrell family of Thornton Hall. Dicken [1952] accepted the early lineage posited by Tyrrell [1910] and added considerable new details about the American side of the family. Brown [1982] effectively disproved Tyrrell's proposed lineage and any link to the Tyrrells of Thornton Hall, Bucks, and traced the American immigrants back only a few generations to a TYRRELL/TERRELL family of Hegbourne and Reading, Berkshire. Barnhill [1934] began the discussion of the TERRELL lineage with Richmond "The Immigrant", and ignored earlier generations. Over the past several decades, the TSA has started from the revised ancestry proposed by Brown [1982] and built on that, publishing their revised "Proposed English Pedigree of some Immigrant TERRELL's".
Tyrrell [2001] has also added some additional conclusions on the Hagbourne roots of Richmond "The Immigrant" which the TSA has incorporated into their outline. Tyrrell concluded: "Regardless of whether you trace to Richmond, William, or Timothy TERRELL of Va, it appears that the lineage ends with Robert & Agnes of West Hagbourne in Berkshire, no part of Oxfordshire. The long accepted lineage through William to Thronton manor is proven to be false speculation..."
