PATRICK HEPBURN, 2nd LORD HAILES and 1st EARL OF BOTHWELL (S), so cr 17 Oct 1488, when the Lordship of Bothwell (previously held by an ancestor of the RAMSAY Bts of Balmain, qv) was erected into the superior honour and granted him by the new king JAMES IV following Hepburn's prominent part in the victory of Sauchieburn over JAMES III, against whom JAMES IV, although JAMES III's own son, had nevertheless contended; ktd 1480/1, High Admiral of Scotland, Master of the King's Household and Warden West and Middle Marches; in March 1491/2 he resigned the lordship of Bothwell to the Douglas who was then Earl of Angus, getting in recompense the important Lordship of Liddisdale together with the Castle of Hermitage and other like properties, a ploy of JAMES IV's to weaken the Douglas power; m 1st c 1 Feb 1480/1 Lady Janet/Joanna Douglas (dspm), dau of 1st Earl of Morton (qv). The 1st EARL m 2nd (contract 21 Feb 1490/1) Lady Margaret Gordon, dau of 1st Earl of Huntly (see HUNTLY, M), and d 18 Oct 1508, leaving, with other issue (see HAMILTON and BRANDON, D).2 He was Earl of Bothwell on 17 October 1488.1,2
