"WLADISLAW von Beuthen ([1277/83]-[16 Sep 1351/8 Sep 1352]). “Kazimirus...dux Opoliensis et dnus in Bythom” swore allegiance to Wenzel II King of Bohemia, with the consent of “filiorum meorum Boleslas et Wladislai”, by charter dated 10 Jan 1289[58]. He succeeded his father in 1312 as WLADISLAW Duke of Beuthen and Kosel. After Jan King of Bohemia invaded Silesia in early 1327, he imposed Bohemian suzerainty on Duke Wladislaw[59]: “Wladislaus dux Coslensis” swore allegiance to King Jan by charter dated 19 Feb 1327[60]. “Lestko...dux Rathiborgensis” pledged “civitatem Cozlam” to “Wladislai...ducis Buthumiensis ac puerorum eius...fratri nostro” [really his first cousin] for 15 years in return for a loan, naming “sorori nostre...domine Offke, claustrali Rathboriensi”, by charter dated 15 Feb 1334[61]. “Kazisimir...dux Tesnicensis” sold “castrum...Sevor” to “Wladislao fratri nostro duci Bythumensi et Kotzlensi filioque eius Kazimiro primogenito...et aliis pueris eius”, by charter dated 11 Apr 1337, witnessed by “patruis nostris Bolkonis Falckenbergensi, Bolkone Opoliensi, Alberto Streliczensi, ducibus...”[62]. The description of Wladislaw as Kasimir’s brother has not been explained: they appear to have been first cousins. In 1345 Duke Wladislaw repulsed an attack by Bohemian troops and 15 Feb 1346 agreed a treaty with Kazimierz III King of Poland under which the latter agreed to provide military help against Bohemia[63].

BIRTH 1252
DEATH 9 Nov 1301 (aged 48–49)
Bolko I the Strict also known as Bolko I Surowy was a Duke of Lwówek, Duke of S'widnica-Ziebice. He was the second son of Bolesaw II the Bald, Duke of Legnica by his first wife Hedwig, daughter of Henry I, Count of Anhalt. One of the first tasks of Bolko I as sole ruler was to protect his modest inheritance from the growing power of Henry IV Probus, Duke of Wroclaw. To that end, he decided to enter into an alliance with the Margraves of Brandenburg. In order to cement this alliance, a marriage was arranged between Bolko I and the daughter of Margrave Otto V the Long, Beatrice. The betrothal was performed in the city of Spandau on April 19, 1279; however, because of the close relationship between groom and bride, the formal wedding was performed more than five years later, in 1284
Bolko was energetic in developing his lands and building castles. Although a Slavic Piast by origin, he encouraged colonization of his lands by German settlers and a patron of the Cistercian movement, notably founding the Cistercian monastery of Grüssau (Krzeszów). In Berlin on October 4,1284, Bolko I married Beatrice, daughter of Otto V "the Tall", Margrave of Brandenburg-Salzwedel. They had ten children:
Bolko I died suddenly on 9 November 1301, and was buried in Grüssau Abbey

; Per Genealogics:
“Bolko I, known as 'the Strict', was born between 1252 and 1256, the second son of Boleslaw II von Schlesien, Herzog von Liegnitz, and Hedwig von Anhalt. Probably because he was still too young to participate actively in politics, Bolko appears rarely in the chronicles before his father's death. It is possible that he took part in the Battle of Stolec in 1277, in which his older brother Henryk V 'the Fat' won a famous victory.
“When Boleslaw II died on 26 December 1278, Bolko and his younger brother Bernhard 'the Lightsome' inherited Jawor (Jauer) and Lwówek (Löwenberg) as co-rulers, and their elder brother Henryk V retained Legnica (Liegnitz). In 1281 Bolko and Bernhard divided their domains: Bernhard kept Lwówek, and Bolko became the sole ruler of Jawor.
“One of Bolko's first tasks as sole ruler was to protect his modest inheritance from the growing power of Henryk IV 'Probus', duke of Wroclaw (Herzog von Schlesien zu Breslau). To that end he decided to enter into an alliance with the margraves of Brandenburg. To cement this alliance a marriage was arranged between Bolko and Beatrix von Brandenburg, the daughter of Otto V 'the Long', Markgraf von Brandenburg, and Jutta von Henneberg, heiress of Koburg and Schmalkalden. The betrothal was celebrated in the city of Spandau on 19 April 1279; however, because the close relationship between groom and bride, the formal wedding was only performed more than five years later, in Berlin on 4 October 1284 (although the papal dispensation to allow the wedding was announced one year later again, in 1285). They had ten children of whom two sons and three daughters would have progeny.
“Bolko's relationship to the House of Ascania led him into armed conflict with the German King Rudolf I von Habsburg and Henryk IV 'Probus'. A campaign against Wroclaw in 1280 and Prague in the following year, instead of the expected successes, brought him a retaliatory campaign by Henryk.
“After the death of his brother Bernhard in 1286 without issue, Bolko inherited the duchy of Lwówek, by virtue of a reciprocal inheritance treaty signed by the brothers around 1281.
“In the second half of 1280s, Bolko attempted to avoid the dangers from the rising power of Henryk IV 'Probus' and to that end he approached King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. On several occasions he travelled to Prague and took part in many court ceremonies. However, he strongly resisted the complete dominance of Prague and received only minor benefits from the Bohemian kingdom, such as possession of the strategic Schomberg Castle on the Bohemian frontier.
“The unexpected death of Henryk IV 'Probus' in 1290 caused a complete change in Silesian politics. Bolko's brother Henryk V occupied Wroclaw and took control of all of Henryk IV's domains, but had to face the opposition of the Wroclaw nobility and the pretensions of the rightful heir of Henryk IV Henryk I-III von Schlesien, duke Glogowski. Bolko decided to give his brother assistance; however, the price for it was quite high. Only after Henryk V gave him the towns of Swidnica, Zabkowice, Ziebice and Strzelin did Bolko I send troops and food to Wroclaw and Legnica. The help for Henryk V was, however, inadequate; in the end Henryk V was defeated and imprisoned in an iron cage by Henryk I-III. Named regent of Henryk V's domains during his absence, Bolko never attempted to obtain the release of his brother.
“The 1290s were also a period of difficult relations with the neighbouring kingdom of Bohemia. It is not known why the relationship soured between Bolko and Bohemia, but it is possibly because Bolko, in order to secure his domains, began the intensive building of fortifications in his duchy (particularly in the Bohemian frontier towns of Swidnica, Wlen, Strzegom and Kammienna Góra). After this Bolko attempted to take full control over the duchy of Nysa-Otmuchów, given to the bishopric of Wroclaw in Henryk IV's will.
“Resentful of Bolko's ambitions, Bishop Jan Romka decided to use the strongest weapons available to him against the duke: in 1294 Bolko was excommunicated, and all his lands were placed under an interdict. Bolko had little option but to renounce his claims, and he freed the bishop's castles that he had occupied.
“The tensions between Bolko and King Wenceslaus II finally erupted into war in 1295. The Bohemian king did not expect significant resistance, but to his great surprise he had to observe the effectiveness of Bolko's defences. Bolko was able to use the fortifications he had built, and the Bohemian army was stopped at Kamienna Góra. Bolko also demonstrated his shrewdness as a politician; immediately after he stopped the Bohemian troops he put his domains under the protection of Pope Boniface VIII, which eventually led King Wenceslaus II to seek a settlement. The peace was probably signed at the beginning of 1297, since on 2 June of that year Bolko was present at the coronation of Wenceslaus II in Prague.
“At the beginning of 1296 Bolko's brother Henryk V 'the Fat' died, leaving three minor sons. As the closest male relative, Bolko was given the guardianship of Henryk V's children and the regency of his domains. In this situation he attempted to extract all the benefits he could and took for himself the castle of Sobótka. Bolko's regency had to face several difficulties, the first of which was the resistance of the powerful Wroclaw nobles, who feared that the well-known harshness of his rule could affect their privileges. Henryk I-III von Schlesien, duke Glogowski, soon decided to exploit Bolko's difficulties and launched a war against him. However in this instance Bolko achieved complete success; he not only managed to repel Henryk's invasion, but also to capture the castles of Chojnów and Boleslawice.
“Bolko was energetic in developing his lands and building castles. Although a Slavic Piast by origin, he encouraged colonisation of his lands by German settlers and was a patron of the Cistercian movement, notably founding the Cistercian monastery of Grüssau (Krzeszów). He was a patron of literature. An 8000 line poem in Middle High German on the exploits of Ludwig III, Graf von Thüringen, was composed by an unnamed priest at Bolko's instigation.
“To resolve the tense situation in Upper Silesia, by March 1297 an annual congress of Silesian dukes was convened in Zwanowicach, where Bolko reached a final settlement with Henryk I-III. Bolko spent the last years of his life strengthening his position as the most powerful of the Silesian princes, which he achieved after his recognition as a papal vassal on 21 March 1299.
“Bolko died suddenly on 9 November 1301, and was buried in Grüssau Abbey. He was succeeded by his sons, but because they were minors at that time, his brother-in-law Hermann, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Salzwedel, assumed the regency of his domains and the guardianship of his children. The custody of Henryk V's sons and the regency of his lands was taken by King Wenceslaus II.”.6 Boleslaw I "Wielki" (?) BIRTH 1252
** Judith (b. ca. 1287 – d. Landshut, 15 September 1320), married in 1299 to Stephen I, Duke of Lower Bavaria.
** Bolko (b. ca. 1288 – d. 30 January 1300).
** Beatrice (b. 1290 – d. Munich, 25 August 1322), married by 14 October 1308 to Louis IV, Duke of Upper Bavaria, later German King and Holy Roman Emperor.

; Per Genealogics:

“Wladislaw, duke of Schlesien-Bytom and Kozielsk, was born between 1277 and 1283, the son of Kasimir von Schlesien, duke of Bytom and Kozielsk (Herzog von Beuthen und Kosel), and his wife Helena. His first official appearance was in 1289 on the occasion of the homage by his father to King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. In 1303 Wladislaw received the town of Kozle from his father.
“On 21 September 1308 Wladislaw married Markgräfin Beatrix von Brandenburg, widow of Bolko I von Schlesien, Herzog von Jauer und Schweidnitz, and daughter of Otto V, Markgraf von Brandenburg, and Jutta von Henneberg, heiress of Koburg and Schmalkalden. Of their children only Euphemia would have progeny, marrying Konrad I, duke of Olesnica (Herzog von Schlesien in Öls).
“For unknown reasons, after his father's death in 1312 Wladislaw only retained Kozle, and Bytom, the capital of the duchy, was given to his younger brother Siemowit. Kasimir's two sons who followed a Church career also received lands; Boleslaw received Toszek and Mieszko received Siewierz (another brother, Georg, was co-ruler with Wladislaw, though Wladislaw in reality ruled alone).
“Beatrix died in 1316, and on 6 April 1328 Wladislaw married Fürstin Lukardis von Mecklenburg, daughter of Pribislaw II von Mecklenburg and Katharina of Pomorze Gdanskie. Of their children only Bolko would have progeny.
“In 1316 Wladislaw assumed the rule over Bytom. The circumstances of the removal of Siemowit are unknown, and the next mention of him was on 19 February 1327, when Wladislaw, Siemowit and Georg paid homage to the Bohemian king Johann 'the Blind' of Luxembourg, in Opawa. One year earlier (in 1315) his brothers Boleslaw and Mieszko had chosen to live in Hungary and put their lands under Wladislaw's regency.
“In 1328 Mieszko formally resigned his authority over Siewierz in favour of Wladislaw, and one year later (in 1329), the death of Boleslaw allowed Wladislaw to reunite all of the paternal lands under his rule. However, this unity was not to last. His continual financial problems forced Wladislaw to sell part of his inheritance. On 21 February 1334 he pledged the town of Kozle to his cousin Lestko/Leszek, duke of Racibórz (Herzog von Schlesien in Ratibor) for 4,000 pieces of silver, on the understanding that, in the event of Leszek's death without issue, Kozle would return to the duchy of Bytom. Leszek died two years later in 1336, and in accordance with the terms of the pledge Kozle was returned to Wladislaw, but he was soon after forced to give his land to his eldest son Kasimir, and after Kasimir's death in 1347 the town was given to his younger half-brother Bolko.
“In 1337 Wladislaw suffered further territorial losses. On 8 May he sold Siewierz to Kazimierz I, duke of Schlesien in Cieszyn, and at the end of that year he sold to his cousin Boleslaw II, duke of Opole (Herzog von Schlesien-Oppeln) the town of Toszek for 100 fines. Finally, around 1340 Wladislaw decided to give Gliwice to his brother Siemowit as a separate duchy.
“Wladislaw's former cautious policies then changed markedly: in the course of the Polish-Bohemian War of 1345-1348 he sided with the Polish kingdom, especially after the unexpected victories in the Battles of Pogon (now Sosnowiec) and Lelów. In 1345 Wladislaw repelled an attack by Bohemian troops and on 15 February 1346 he signed a treaty with Kazimierz III 'the Great', king of Poland, under which the latter agreed to provide military help against Bohemia. Poland was unable to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to extend its influence into the Upper Silesia, and after 1348 Wladislaw was again an ally of Bohemia.
“Wladislaw died before 8 September 1352, and it is not known where he was buried. His remaining lands were inherited by his only surviving son Bolko. Shortly before his death, Wladislaw concluded an agreement with the Bohemian king allowing the succession of women to his duchy, which happened in 1355 and led to the division of Bytom between the dukes of Olesnica and Cieszyn.”.4

; Shortly after having succeeded, he went on a crusade against the heathens in Lithuania, one lasting almost two years. With great danger to himself, he saved the life of a three-year-old girl, after which he had her baptised as Catharina and placed in a convent at Rhena.
In 1271, accompanied by a small retinue, he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, appointing his wife as Regent. On the road between Accre and Jerusalem, on 25 June 1272, he was taken prisoner by the Saracens and brought to Cairo where he was imprisoned. It took three years before the news reached Mecklenburg. Unrest and upheavels then followed as Heinrich's brother, Johann, wanted to take over the Regency. It took a further eight years before Johann could be defeated.
After twenty-six years' imprisonment, a new Sultan released Heinrich in 1297 and, in 1298, he returned to Mecklenburg where he was believed to have died. However, he was received with great joy, only to die shortly afterwards, on 2 January 1302.3
