The Annales Hamburgenses record the death in 1263 of "Iohannes comes Holtsaciæ" and his burial in Reinfeld[91]. The necrology of Visbeck records the death "XIII Kal Mai 1263" of "Johannes comes"[92]. His place of burial is confirmed by the charter dated 2 Feb 1306 under which [his son] "Iohannes...comes Holtzatie et Stormarie" established a foundation in Kloster Preetz, for the souls of "patris nostri comitis Johannis ac...matris nostre Elysabeth" who were buried there[93].

The Annales Stadenses record the betrothal "1241 IV Id Nov in Hamborch" of "Iohannes comes filius fratris Adolfi" and "filia ducis Saxoniæ"[94]. The Cronica Principum Saxonie names "Iuttam…Elizabeth" as daughters of "Albertus dux" & his second wife Agnes, specifying that Elisabeth married "Iohannes comes Holtsacie"[95]. "Gerhardus comes Holtsacie et Scowenborgh" confirmed donations to the church of Hamburg, with the consent of "domine Elisabeth relicte fratre nostri, comitis Johannis, eiusque filiorum Adolfi, Johannis et Alberti fratruelium nostrorum…filiorum nostrorum Johannis et Gherardi", by charter dated 16 Jul 1265[96]. ; Per Genealogics:
"Johann I was born about 1229, the eldest son of Adolf IV, Graf von Holstein, and Hedwig (Heilwig) von der Lippe. After his father retired to the monastery in 1239, Johann ruled with his younger brother Gerhard I, initially under the guardianship of their Uncle Abel, then duke of Schleswig (later king of Denmark). He and his brother were constantly embroiled in disputes with the bishop of Minden.
"In 1250 Johann married Elisabeth von Sachsen, daughter of Albrecht I, Herzog von Sachsen, and his second wife Agnes von Thüringen. They had five children, of whom Agnes and Johann II would have progeny.
"In 1255 the brothers signed a trade agreement with Lübeck. In 1261 the county was divided. Johann took over the part containing Kiel, Wagrien and Ostholstein, whereas Gerhard took over the part containing Stormarm, Plön and Schauenburg. Johann chose Kiel as his residence, while Gerhard chose Itzehoe. When Denmark ceded Rendsburg, it went to Gerhard.
"Johann died on 20 April 1263. After his death his sons ruled jointly under the regency of their uncle Gerhard. However in 1273 they divided their territory into Holstein-Segeberg and Holstein-Kiel. When Adolf V died without an heir in 1308, the two parts were reunited.
"Johann's widow Elisabeth married Konrad I, Graf von Brehna, and they became the parents of five children of whom none had progeny. Elisabeth died before 2 February 1306."4
