; 4. iii. Steven Gardiner, born 1490 in Holborn, London, England; died
12 Nov 1555 in Whitehall, Southwark, Surrey, England. See a special
section on this Steven Gardiner. Steven has sometimes been named as
the son of John Gardiner of Bury St. Edmunds, England but there are
several things that do not fit into place on this Stephen. First of
all his first name is spelled differently. The Letters and Papers of
Henry VIII, in the manuscript section of the British Museum use the
spelling "Steven Gardynyr" just the way Steven signed his name. The
man who spelled his name Stephen was almost out of the time frame in
which "Steven" was estimated by historians to have been born. But, the
greatest bit of evidence supporting "Steven" vs. "Stephen" as the
Bishop of Winchester, is James Betham's Genealogical Table, DCX (610)
in the Guildhall Library, London, which gives Steven's parents as
William Gardiner and Helen Tudor. Although the Gardiner family name
has undergone a number of changes down through the ages, as have all
other families, the name is being carried in the computer as Gardiner,
to reduce the possibility of error in the programing of an ancestral
line.1

William Gardiner was born in 1450 at Midlands, Oxfordshire, England.2 He married Ellen/Helen Tudor, daughter of Jasper Tudor KG., Earl of Pembroke, 1st Duke of Bedford, in 1485.3,4,2,5
William Gardiner died in 1495 at The Bank, co. Surrey, England.2
; Jasper Tudor, K.G., Duke of Bedford, Earl of Pembroke (died 1495), the
enigmatic uncle of King Henry VII of England, had one known
illegitimate daughter, Ellen (or Helen), who became the wife of
William Gardiner, Citizen and Grocer of London. Ellen and her
husband, William, in turn had one known child, Thomas Gardiner, who
was Prior of Tynemouth.
For evidence and particulars of the Gardiner family, see the following
sources:

108.

weblink:

Complete Peerage, 2 (1912): 73, footnote d (sub Bedford) alleges
without foundation or any documentation that Jasper Tudor's daughter,
Ellen (or Helen), was the mother of Stephen Gardiner, the famous
Bishop of Winchester. Bishop Gardiner is known, however. to have been
the son of a John Gardiner, of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, possibly by
a wife named Agnes [Reference: ODNB, biog. of Stephen Gardiner].
I might note that Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands database repeats
this same error regarding Bishop Gardiner, and, like Complete Peerage,
supplies no documentation. I assume Cawley got his information from
Burke on whom he seems to rely for much of his information. The same
error can be found in Burke as early as 1831. See the following
weblink for Burke:

; All of my information (for the most part) comes from "Gardiner:
Generations and Relations" by Thomas Richard Gardiner, self-published
1991. Here is what he has to say:
"Wyllyam Gardynyr, son of (father unknown) and of (mother unknown),
born in 1450 in Midlands, Oxfordshire, England; died 1495 in The Bank,
Surrey, England. He married in 1485, in London, England to Helen
Tudor, daughter of Jasper Tudor. William Gardiner, who was born circa
1450, married Helen Tudor, first cousin to Henry VII, as found on
Betham's Genealogical Table DCX in Guildhall Library, London, England.
William Gardiner and his wife, Helen Tudor, resided on the south bank
of the Thames River just accross from the walled city of London, prior
to the establishment of any town, in an area that was then known
simply as "The Bank". His magnificent home was located somewhere
between the more recent towns of Bermondey and Southwalk in the county
of Surrey. He also retained many of his holdings in the Midlands near
Oxon Ford, now known as Oxford.
Children of Wyllyam and Heln (Tudor) Gardynyr were as follows:
2. i. Richard Gardiner, born 1486 in London, England; died 1548 in
London, England. This Richard Gardiner may have been the eldest son of
William Gardiner and Helen Tudor. There is no document to prove this
assumption. He may have also been the father of Germain Gardiner (b.
1505) and also of Richard (b. 1507) Sargeant at Arms to Henry VIII,
who was reported to have been executed for alloegedly witholding
testimony in the trial of Anne Bolyn. Since I am unable to identifyn
this person more fully, I have not included him and his two sons to
definitely be in the line of descent from William Gardiner and Helen
Tudor, although in the book, STEPHEN GARDINER AND THE TUDOR REACTION,
the author mentions Germain as the nephew of Stephen. In another bit
of information on Germain, he was spoken of as a cousin of Stephen, so
the exact identity of these three individuals are not clear.
+3. ii. William Gardiner, born 1488
4. iii. Steven Gardiner, born 1490 in Holborn, London, England; died
12 Nov 1555 in Whitehall, Southwark, Surrey, England. See a special
section on this Steven Gardiner. Steven has sometimes been named as
the son of John Gardiner of Bury St. Edmunds, England but there are

all his first name is spelled differently. The Letters and Papers of

greatest bit of evidence supporting "Steven" vs. "Stephen" as the
Bishop of Winchester, is James Betham's Genealogical Table, DCX (610)
in the Guildhall Library, London, which gives Steven's parents as
William Gardiner and Helen Tudor. Although the Gardiner family name
has undergone a number of changes down through the ages, as have all
other families, the name is being carried in the computer as Gardiner,
to reduce the possibility of error in the programing of an ancestral
line.
3. WIlliam Gardiner, (Wyllyam), born 1488 in London, Live awhile in
Hertfordshire, England; died 1549 in The Grange, Bermondsey, Surrey,
England. He married 1520, in England to Elizabeth Mitchell. There
seems to be onlya alinited amount of information available on this
William Gardiner, brother of Steven, Bishop of Winchester. It is
believed that he may have been the presbyter at Canterbury whom Steven
Gardiner stopped by to visit on one of his trips back from France
which is mentioned under Steven Gardiner in this book. It was also
brought to the attention of those sitting in judgement at the
Excommunication trial of Steven Gardiner, that he had a brother
William, and this William lived for a while in Herefordshire. William
married Elizabeth Mitchell, of Yorkshire, and died in Bermondsey,
Surrey. It is quite probable that William had an older brother since
it is an Old English custom to name the second son after his father
and the eldest son after the grandfather, which this Gardiner family
has followed with remarkable consistancy down through the generations.
The grandfather could come from either side of the family, as this
was not followed quite as closely as in the use of the father's name.
The was a Richard Gardiner, born about 1486 who was quite prominent in
the London area, who may have been an older member of this family,
which I have listed as a probability since I can find no other who
would more easily fit the situation. He was listed in the service of
Henry VIII as "Seargent at Arms"."
So, obviously, Mr. Gardiner, the author is not as astute as many on
this list and jumps (no, leaps) to many conclusions.
His main source is Betham's Genealogical Table. I am not familiar with
this document.2 EDV-14.

See the following

; All of my information (for the most part) comes from "Gardiner:
Edmunds, England but there are
several things that do not fit into place on this Stephen. First of
all his first name is spelled differently.
Although the Gardiner family name

; Per Genealogics:
"Wilhelm V, Herzog von Jülich, was born about 1299, the son of Gerhard V, Graf von Jülich, and his first wife NN Gräfin von Kessel. Wilhelm was called the firstborn son of Gerhard and Isabella in a charter for Averbode abbey dated 11 November 1320 but the wives were not clearly identified. He succeeded his father in 1328 as Graf von Jülich. His brother Walram became archbishop of Cologne in 1332, and the prince-electorate of Cologne and Jülich, formerly enemies, became allies. They supported Emperor Ludwig IV 'der Bayer', who raised Wilhelm in 1336 to the status of Margrave and Prince of the Empire. After the death of Ludwig, Wilhelm became a supporter of Karl IV.
"On 26 February 1324 in Cologne Wilhelm married Johanna of Holland and Hainault, daughter of Willem III 'the Good', Graaf van Holland en Hainault, and Jeanne de Valois. Of their seven children, Gerhard, Richardis, Philippa, Wilhelm VI and Elisabeth would have progeny.
"The marriage of Wilhelm's eldest son Gerhard to Gräfin Margarete von Ravensberg, heiress of Berg, led to the acquisition of Ravensberg in 1346 and Berg in 1348. His sons joined a revolt of the Jülich knighthood in which Wilhelm was captured in 1349 and only released in 1351 in response to external pressure. In 1356 he was elevated to Duke.
"Wilhelm died on 26 February 1361. The duchy of Jülich came to his second son Wilhelm. The successors of his eldest son Gerhard ruled in Berg and Ravensberg. After the death in 1423 of his grandson Rainald, son of Wilhelm VI, the duchies of Jülich and Berg and the county of Ravensberg were united under his great-grandson Adolf II, Herzog von Jülich. Wilhelm was buried at Nideggen, as was his wife when she died in 1374."7
; Per Wikipedia:
"William V, Duke of Jülich (c.? 1299 – 25/26 February 1361) was a German nobleman. Some authors call him William I, because he was the first Duke of Jülich; the earlier Williams had been Count of Jülich. Other authors call the subject of this article "William VI"; they count the son and co-ruler of William IV as William V.
"William V was the eldest son of Gerhard V of Jülich and Elisabeth of Brabant-Aarschot, daughter of Godfrey of Brabant.[1]
"William V was a key political figure of his time, being a brother-in-law to both Edward III of England and Emperor Ludwig IV. He spent enormous sums of money to have his brother Walram of Jülich appointed as Archbishop of Cologne over Adolph II of the Marck. In 1337 he was crucially involved in the German-English alliance which caused the start of the Hundred Years' War. William was an important supporter of Emperor Ludwig and for a time, he supported the Habsburgs against the House of Luxembourg in the Carinthian war of succession. Upon the collapse of the German-English alliance and the death of his brother-in-law, William switched his allegiance to Emperor Charles IV. In 1352 he initiated an inheritance tax on Heinsberg-Valkenburg/Monschau. William won important positions through his Archbishop brother and also served for a time as a field captain for Flanders in the Hundred Years' War. His sons fought against him during an uprising of part of the Jülich knighthood which opposed inclusion in the increasing territorial state, and he was imprisoned by them in 1349, but released in 1351 due to public pressure.
"Upon his father's death in 1328, William became Count of Jülich. In 1336 William was appointed Margrave by his brother-in-law, Emperor Ludwig IV, and in 1356/57 he was raised to the level of Duke by Emperor Charles IV, thus becoming the first Duke of Jülich. His skillful marriage policy, especially the marriage of his son Gerhard to Margaret of Ravensberg, heiress of Berg and Ravensberg, enabled him to add territory to the house of Jülich. Upon William's death in 1361, the Duchy of Jülich passed to his second son, William, his eldest son having predeceased. William and his wife are buried in Nideggen.
"He seems to have held the title of Earl of Cambridge from 1340 to his death.
Family and children
"On 26 February 1324 in Cologne, William married Joanna of Hainaut (1311/13 – 1374). They had the following children:

That Wilhelm was the son of Elisabeth de Brabant is confirmed by the charter dated 6 Dec 1361 under which Jean II King of France stated that "les chasteaux de Vierzon et Lury…appartiennent a nostre…cousin […Wilhelm II Duke of Jülich] comme son propre héritage", the castles in question having been inherited from Elisabeth de Brabant[1000]. "Gerardus comes Juliacensis, Guillelmus eius primogenitus filius et Henricus de Machem prepositus Aquensis" confirmed arrangements between "nostrum consanguineum et dominum comitem Ghelrie" and "nostri consanguinei domini Guillielmi Hanonye et Hollandie comitis" by charter dated 3 Jul 1307[1001]. The precise family relationship between Duke Wilhelm and Reinoud Mascherell Heer van Schoonvorst (see the document BRABANT, LOUVAIN) has not been ascertained. The term “swagher” suggests that it was by marriage, maybe through his wife or by marriage to a Jülich cousin. It should be noted that Wilhelm’s son Gerhard also described Reinoud as his “swager” (see below). “Swager” (or equivalents) was an imprecise term and the relationship could have been remote. Reinoud’s prominent position may have tempted many to highlight him as a family relation in contemporary documentation, however distant the connection.

[She married secondly Baudouin [III] de Thiennes. The primary source which confirms her supposed second marriage has not yet been identified. The marriage is recorded by Gailliard who notes that "Baudouin de Luxembourg dit de Thiennes, seigneur de ce lieu, de Heuchin, la Planque, sénéchal héréditaire de Flandre" married "Jeanne de Hainaut veuve sans enfants de Gérard de Juliers et fille de Guillaume-le-Bon comte de Hainaut et de Jeanne de Valois", implying that she was the mother of the son who is named in the same source (which would be incredible considering the date her first husband died)[1008]. No primary source is cited, but given the number of errors in this short extract, it is suggested that Jeanne’s supposed second marriage should be viewed with caution until a more reliable source emerges.] "

Froissart names "Jehane et…Issabiel" as the sisters of "Phelippe…roine d’Engleterre", adding in a later passage that "Jehanne…estoit contesse de Jullers"[499]. The primary source which confirms her supposed second marriage has not yet been identified. The marriage is recorded by Gailliard who notes that "Baudouin de Luxembourg dit de Thiennes, seigneur de ce lieu, de Heuchin, la Planque, sénéchal héréditaire de Flandre" (with the parents who are noted below) married "Jeanne de Hainaut veuve sans enfants de Gérard de Juliers et fille de Guillaume-le-Bon comte de Hainaut et de Jeanne de Valois", implying that she was the mother of the son who is named in the same so[urce (which would be incredible considering the date her first husband died)[500]. No primary source is cited, but given the number of errors in this short extract, it is suggested that Jeanne’s supposed second marriage should be viewed with caution until a more reliable source emerges.]

Wilhelm V-I (?) Duke of Jülich died on 26 February 1361; Genealogics says d. 26 Feb 1361; Med Lands says d. 26 Feb 1362.2,6,9
; Per Genealogics:

"WILHELM [V] (-26 Feb 1362). "…Wilhelmo primogenito comitis Juliacensis…" witnessed the charter dated 13 May 1275 under which "Theodericus dictus Luf, frater comitis Clivensis" granted Hesshausenwardt island to "nostro filio Theoderico et eius legitimis heredibus"[999]. Markgraf von Jülich 1336. Duke of Jülich 1356. "Wilhelm…hertzoge van Gulge, greue van Valkenborch und heirre van Monyoye" confirmed that "unse…swager…Reynart here van Schonuorst" had transferred to him "sloss Valkenborch" in return for "Valkenborch ind Monyoe" by charter dated 25 Mar 1357[1002].
