Sir Hugh de Hastings Knt., of Sutton Scotney, Hants was born circa 1310 at Sutton Scotney, co. Hampshire, England; Richardson says "aged 24 in 1334."6,3,2 He married Margary Foliot, daughter of Sir Richard Foliot 2nd Lord Foliot and Joan de Braose, before 18 May 1330.6,3,7,8,2
Sir Hugh de Hastings Knt., of Sutton Scotney, Hants died on 21 July 1347.6,1,3,2
Sir Hugh de Hastings Knt., of Sutton Scotney, Hants was buried after 30 July 1347 at Elsing Churg, co. Norfolk, England.3
; Hugh (Sir), of Sutton Scotney, Hants; b c 1310; fought Battle of Sluys 1340, Capt and Lt English army in Flanders 1346, fought Battle of Crécy 1346; m by 18 May 1330 Margery, sis and coheir of Richard Foliot, of Gressenhall and Weasenham, Norfolk, and d 29 or 30 July 1347.6
; On 20 June 1346, Hugh de Hastings, knight, of Sutton Scotney, co. Hants. was appointed by King Edward III of England as Captain and Lieutenant of the King in Flanders, and commissioned in the same writs to raise Flemish forces to assist the King against France. Concerning this appointment, Miss Burford Butcher wrote
' The King addresses him in these writs " dilecto et
fideli consanguineo suo ": as Hugh was not a son of
Isabel (de Valence), the form of address must be viewed
as complimentary. ' [1]
The nearness of the relationship between Edward III of England and Isabel de Valence (1st wife of John de Hastings, lord of Abergavenny, d. 1312, and step-mother of Sir Hugh) was clearly what Miss Butcher had
in mind: if Sir Hugh had been related to the King through this marriage, they would have been 2nd cousins 1x removed.
The author was in error, however, as she was unaware that a relationship only slightly more distant existed between King Edward III and Hugh de Hastings, as follows:

Hello All,
With regard to the well known monumental brass of Sir Hugh de Hastings
(d. 1347) in the church of Elsing, Norfolk, Norman F. Cantor wrote in part,
' Sir Hugh in his tomb is flanked by a group of eight weepers,
headed by King Edward III and including companions in arms and
members of the Order of the Garter such as Ralph, Earl of
Stafford, and relatives such as Roger, Lord Grey of Ruthin.
According to Binski, the tomb expresses "a form of corporate
identity, embedded in shared military honor and badges of
allegiance." ' [1]
A prior SGM thread had resolved the confusion evidenced by Professor
Cantor, and others [2], concerning the alleged lack of relationships
between Sir Hugh and the weepers on his monument, save one: King Edward
III [3].
At the time I wrote the subject post in September last year, I had
already forgotten a previous thread concerning Sir Hugh and his kinship
to King Edward III from September 2004, in which it was shown that they
were in fact 4th cousins 1x removed [4].
It is therefore more accurate to say, concerning the weepers
represented on the monument of Sir Hugh de Hastings at Elsing, that
" Hastings selected eight of his old comrades-in-arms from
the French wars for this purpose, ALL of whom were related
to him. "
Cheers,
John *
