"François was born on 12 September 1494, the son of Charles d'Orléans, comte d'Angoulême, and Louise de Savoie. At his birth there seemed little prospect that he would ever ascend the throne. His father died before he was two years old and François and his only sister Marguerite, to whom he was devoted all his life, were carefully brought up by their ambitious mother Louise de Savoie, who lived to see both her children occupying thrones. François had dark hair, a pointed beard, an enormous nose and large dark eyes. He loved magnificent clothes and display of every kind. His mother had negotiated his marriage to Claude de France, daughter of Louis XII, king of France and Anne of Brittany. The marriage took place on 18 May 1514 in St.Germain-en-Laye, four months after the death of Anne of Brittany, who had bitterly opposed it. François and Claude were happy together in spite of his many infidelities, and she bore him seven children before she died prematurely in July 1524 aged twenty-four. Only his son Henri and daughter Marguerite would have progeny.
"The main events in the reign of François, such as his meeting with Henry VIII on the Field of Cloth of Gold and his great rivalry with Emperor Charles V are the stuff of history. He was the patron of Benvenuto Cellini, who designed a magnificent golden seal for him. His many mistresses included Françoise de Foix, dame de Châteaubriant, and Anne de Heilly de Pisseleu, duchess of Etampes, who both exercised great influence at court.
"After François was defeated and captured at the Battle of Pavia in 1525 by the forces of Emperor Charles V, he was imprisoned in Spain. In a treaty to secure his release he agreed to marry the emperor's sister and make his two sons hostages in Spain. On 5 August 1530 in Capsioux he married Archduchess Eleonore of Austria, queen-widow of Portugal. There were no children from this marriage; possibly François had already contracted the syphilis which was to be the probable cause of his death. He died in March 1547 and was succeeded by his second son Henri."3
